1. STATEMENT OF TEACHING

Humans are naturally curious, inquiring, and inquisitive about everything. The aim of education
should be to encourage the search for answers because we progress in this way. I strive to
facilitate this progress in knowledge, and the central theme of my teaching philosophy is
reasoned and logical thinking. Whether in the classroom or in confrontation with groups of
common people, my goal is to encourage thinking in rational ways to apply in unfamiliar
situations.

I particularly emphasize learning to think about trends and directions (for example,
increasing this will decrease that) rather than rote memorization of facts. To further encourage
seeking answers to the questions around us, I try to encourage the questions themselves. It is
hard to "allow time" for this to happen, especially in a classroom. One way I did this was by
designing the course based on answering questions.

In Socrates’s principle, "I cannot teach anything to anyone, I can only make them
think." Usually, my discourse begins with a discussion on the induction set by taking the
scenarios related to the course title, the current events and issues from youtube sources,
newspaper clippings, and the like to be analyzed, appreciated, and learned.

I guide the students to easily understand the content of the lecture and ensure that students
do not sleep during the class by interacting with them, reprimanding them, sometimes
interrupting them by singing the "Akademi Fantasia" song, singing pauses for students to
continue the theme, as well as funny stories so that the lecture journey is not bland and
monotonous. In John Dewey's philosophical principle, "Education is not a preparation for
life, but education itself is life."

Simultaneously, I actualize the strategy to cultivate the HOTS (KBAT) component in
teaching the students to be more open and generated with creative and critical but informative
thinking skills.

3

The conceptual model for my teaching philosophy is as shown in the following figure:

The students learn best when they are motivated to learn by seeing the classroom material's
value and importance. An interactive classroom environment is also an essential component of
effective learning. Student learning occurs when they are given opportunities to apply the
information presented in class to real-life situations. It allows for the process of transfer and
maintenance of knowledge. The lecturer's role in student learning is to motivate them, facilitate
learning, to develop and apply their competencies, problem-solving, and study skills to their
full potential.

2. ABOUT ME
I received my M.A. in Modern Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies (1992), and Ph.D.
specializing in Computer Based Learning from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom in
1997. I held a B.A.(hon.) in Islamic and Arabic studies from University of al-Azhar, Cairo in
1989. In addition to completing my postgraduate studies of Masters and Ph.D., I was appointed
as the Arabic tutor teaching Arabic: Speaking and Listening for non-Arab British students at
the Department of Modern Arabic Studies, the University of Leeds, United Kingdom.

4

I was among the pioneers of the Technical University of Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), and
was assigned with the post as the first Dean of Students' Affairs (Acting Deputy Vice
Chancellor) at UTeM between 2001 and 2004. I was the former Director of Education Malaysia
Egypt (EME, 2010 to 2013), a Ministry of Higher Education agency based at the Malaysian
Embassy in Cairo, mandated to promote strategic bilateral education relations between the two
countries and to administer more than 12,000 Malaysian students learning in respective
universities in Egypt, in different field of studies, viz. Medical, Arabic and Islamic studies. Prior
to this post, I was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) on
secondment basis for 4 years (2006 to 2010) from UTeM.

3. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My philosophy of teaching is based on a belief that learning needs to be Student Centered
Learning (SCL) and that students need to be equal partners in the learning process. My role
involves using my expertise to put the necessary resources in the hands of the students or more
likely to be sure that my students are well equipped to find and evaluate the resources they need
to answer their questions.

The Covid-19 pandemic challenge for almost a year involved two semesters of lectures.
My teaching and learning with nearly 300 students per semester are carried out online using the
Webex, Team, and Zoom platforms. Our instant, fast and thorough communication takes place
through the ULearn UTeM site, Whatsapp app, and Telegram.

At the beginning of the lecture, I informed the students that my role in the online class
was to be a facilitator, not an information provider. I make many discussion questions so that
the focus of the online discussion is exciting and stimulating and addresses the various
backgrounds and interests of the students. I provide a lot of thoroughness in the classroom, but
I support them as they seek answers and encourage them to work together to make the most of
the learning outcomes. I always provide detailed descriptions of assignment writing, and I offer
guidelines that drive student production.

4. TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

This is the latest print out taken from UTeM’s Student Information System (SMP) that records
my teaching works/responsibilities throughout the years, excluding my service secondment and
teaching experience at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) from 2006 to 2010 (4 years). As

6

registered on UTeM system, the total number of 2,803 students joined and followed my class is
of our concern to observe my commitment in teaching. I teach 3 to 5 classes per semester on 5
different courses offered to local and international students.

5. OTHER RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES

My other teaching responsibilities include the supervision of international postgraduate Masters
and Ph.D. student projects at UTeM and at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). I have
supervised 4 Masters students (completed) from UBD, 3 Ph.D. students (principal supervisor,
ongoing), and 2 Ph.D. students (co-supervisor, ongoing) from UTeM.

As for the international service exposure, under the G to G's secondment service, I was
seconded by Public Service Department for four years (June 2006 - May 2010), to the University
of Brunei Darussalam (UBD). At UBD, I supervised 8 courses offered to the undergraduate and
postgraduate students as follows: i. Islam and Education (PA1401), ii. Methods of Religious
Teaching (PA4219), iii. Methods of Teaching Islamic Religious Education (PA0112), iv.

12

Fundamentals of Religious Education Supervision (PA0401), v. Educational Technology for Islamic
Studies (PI 5403) (M.Ed.), vi) Islamic Theology (IU4201), vii. Siyasah Syar'iyyah (IS3266), viii.
Traditions of the Prophet (IU3223).

Subsequently, I was seconded again from 2010 to 2013 (another three more years) to the
Embassy of Malaysia in Cairo, Egypt. I was assigned Director of Education in Malaysia Egypt (EME),
where I supervised more than 12,000 Malaysian students studying in different universities and
schools in Egypt.

13

I have been appointed as internal examiner for Masters students viva voce at UTeM and
as the assistant chairman for Ph.D. students viva voce. I have also served on many committees
at UTeM. I have also written, evaluated and reviewed papers for research grants of FRGS
(MoHE) and PJP (UTeM). Supporting documents and details will furtherly discussed in item
8 and 9 of this Teaching Portfolio.

I was appointed as the first national Chairman of the main committee of the Rabitah al-
Azhar, The World Organisationfor al-Azhar Graduates, Malaysia (WOAG), branch of the
state of Melaka:
https://www.facebook.com/WOAGMelaka/?notify_field=phone&modal=profile_completion

14

I was also assigned the post Honourable Secretary General for the Malay Welfare
Association of Malaysia (PKMS) at Brunei Darussalam, the right wing to the Malaysian High
Commission in Brunei for 2 terms (2008 - 2010).

15

6. TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Class Session-Lecture and discussion
I begin each class with a brief reflection on what have been learned during the previous class.
Then, my lecture proceeds with establishing the learning outcome for the particular lecture
hours. I believe this is an essential step in setting up student intention (as well as my intention)
in following the lecture session with focus. With a clear objective in each lecture session,
students will be motivated to get involved with the activities that have been planned in order to
achieve the targeted outcome. My lecture session will end up by each member reflecting on
what had been learned today, works needed to carry out for further understanding and things to
explore (pre-reading) for the next lecture session.

Class Presentation
Class presentation is a must activity in my class. It is usually based upon an assigned topic of
discussion. I am implementing this approach as an effort to build student’s confidence, promote
deep understanding in subject matter and enhanced their communication skill. Thru the
activities, students are encouraged to give their very best effort in preparing a good material to
be presented. Moreover, during each presentation, class discussion is conducted where this act
as a medium for students to raise their concern, give comments and feedback to the presentation
done. Example of class presentation by a group of students based on a given assignment is to
follow.

Case Study
Case study is a method that I am adopting to enhance student learning in order to achieve deeper
understanding in the subject matter. The case study is design for students to be able to describe,
analyze, relate and suggest suitable improvement in an issue related to the context of the subject.
This promotes critical thinking among students. Example of case study conducted and student
presentation note was taken from student activities during semester 2 session 2019/2020 and
semester 1 session 2020/2021.

Use of Technology
I am also incorporating the utilization of technology in enhancing student learning in my class.
An example of innovative approach is the utilization of e-Portfolio (Pdf based) software (which
consists of a database of material and process information). The use of this software in teaching
and learning activities for undergraduate study is a pioneer approach in public higher institution.

Despite the effort to incorporate technology assisted materials during learning activities, the
other aspect that I am educating my students is on how to critically study the information found
in the World Wide Web for learning purposes. Guidance is also been given on how to do

16

effective information searching in the internet as well as in the university online resources
(Weblog, ULearn, MOOC, Padlet, Facebook, Whatsapp, Telegram, Wiki, Kahoot and etc.).

In response to the emerging and ever solution to COVID-19 pandemic outbreak which
effected the entire world, E-learning on higher education learning was widely applied to resolve
the impact of quarantine and the prevention of face to face meeting. We have to organise all our
lecture online, there are few difficulties faced by students and lectures., but there was no other
alternative a hand. For 2 semesters (1 year academic calendar) we scheduled the online video
conference for the lectures using various platforms like Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Team, and

17

others. All of these apps contain the standard features of video conferencing and online
meetings, and thus are in the spotlight these days.

I notably used padlet platform as my class warm-up and brainstorming. I will post one or two
questions for the students to search for internet inputs and write down their views. They can
also comment on other people’s thoughts directly on the screen. After 20 minutes, I will lead
the discussion forum before starting my lecture, and answer the questions posed. After
completing the class on ULearn (pdf slide notes), I will activate my Kahoot quiz, which will
assess the students' understanding. Kahoot results for those seated on the podium for the top 5
winners will be captured and posted on our class Telegram app. Then I will show the students
our padlet screen, give my extra comments and publish the students' ideas and opinions as
formulated on Padlet. The publication is considered as the class clean and tidy product of the
day, which looks like a flyer or prospectus page. The product will also be posted on our class
Telegram app.

An alternative solution to our ULearn web platform, I had also utilized Google Classroom,
especially when the ULearn internet signal for UTeM was buffering and slow.

18

Teaching Assessment
The overall score for coursework is 70%, with remaining 30% is evaluated from the final
examination. The allocation of coursework marks is distributed into 2 task categories/activities;
in group and individual, i.e. as follows:

i. the group activities; 20% mark is for mid semester test, and
another 20% is for the group presentation.

ii. another 30% is assessed from the article, audio or video review/
MOOC / ULearn/ e-prints performed individually.

The paperwork/report and article review are to be submitted the latest one week after the mid
semester break by uploading the documents to the group's ULearn page.
7. EVALUATION/APPRAISAL ON MY TEACHING & SUPERVISION
This is to show the Letter of Appraisal on my teaching of two courses: Malaysian Culture
(BLHW2752) for international students and TITAS (BLHW 1702) for local Malaysian students,
issued by the office of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International).

19

7.1 Comments by Local Students
I appreciate feedback from students on the impact of my teaching and supervision. At the end
of semester, students will give feedback on the strength and things that need improvement based
on the current teaching and learning experience. Students’ comments are always considered to
improve my teaching methodology as well as building up my charisma as an academician. The
reflection is not just on the subject matter but including the learning process itself.

As such, the action plan will not just be applicable to the learning of my subject but
encompasses the overall learning process and each individuals’ personal development. Samples
of evaluations and comments by our local and the international students are included as follows:

12. TEACHING IMPROVEMENT AND FUTURE PLAN

In achieving my objective in teaching and learning, I need to always equip myself with the
relevant knowledge and methods so that meaningful learning is taking place thus benefiting the
students in each own way (not only in their career but most important in life). Within the scope
of my responsibility, the level of intended outreach is becoming wider (from a person to a class,
faculty, university, nation and worldwide). There will always be continuous challenge as the
approach, skill needed and methods do progress and vary with time. As such, lifelong learning
is a must practice. I am to face the challenges with optimistic mind, determination and
innovative action as teaching and learning is a passion that I am living with. I look forward to
contribute more in developing the students who not only appreciate knowledge in life, but
honour the significance of knowledge in human life.
