Lil Miss Yokai….Currently a member of Fresh meat, she is soon on her way to subpool. She is one of the
most dedicated and hardworking skaters! She is at every practice giving 110% each and every time.

YoY o as many of her teammates call her, is the epitome of a thirsty freshmeat skater. She pushes herself
at every practice. Contributes to all of the team events, even her family is a huge team supporter.

Freshmeat skaters tend to come and go. Even when Yoyo was the only
freshmeat skater coming to practice, she still showed up. Never
discouraged she pushes thru new skills and drills with an optimistic and
positive attitude. Every one of her teammates agree that she is here
to stay and cannot wait to share the track with her, once she passes
assessment!

Keep an eye out for this up and coming freshie, because the next
time you see her she’s going to be fighting against her seasoned sisters,
for a spot on the roster!

Here’s a little inside scoop on our February Member of the Month!

How old are you? This December I just turned old enough to legally share my first drink with family and
friends! 21 years old.

How long have you been playing? I entered the beautiful world of Derby on September 27th, 2016 and I
have been playing the sport ever since.

How did you discover Roller Derby? I remember my father would to tell my brothers and I about the sport.
I thought the sport sounded so exciting. Later on, the movie Whip it came out and I was hooked. That is
when I truly thought of Roller Derby as a sport I really wanted to try and play.

Explain how your Derby name came to be: Around 7th grade I remember my friends telling me that I
could be so random in conversation or in the things I did. I liked the randomness so I told them, just call
me Lil Miss Random. In recent time, *lights dim down and the spotlight focus solely on me* we were in the
final moments to get our names and numbers submitted for the order of our jerseys and I had still not
submitted a name. I knew I had to pick a name but I wasn't that creative. I started thinking about the
things I liked. I remembered I liked Lil Miss Random, so I thought to use the Lil Miss part. Then for the
next part, I am a big fan of anime so my mind drifted there. In Japan or anime they call demons or
supernatural monsters, Yokai. So I tried putting the two together, liked it, and thought that it would suffice.
That's how Lil Miss Yokai came to be.

What is your favorite thing about derby? There are many thing I love about derby but probably the biggest
reason of all that attracted me to the sport was that it wasn't a fragile, non-contact sport. It is rough,
challenging and I love it. Since young I had always liked more contact, rough sports such as football,
karate, wrestling, basketball and the like. Though my parents hardly let me do them because they didn't
want me getting hurt. Then they finally let me but not until I was much older. And in recent years a friend
of mine from basketball made me realize that I like the challenge. I would always end up putting myself in
challenging situations be it in art or sports. I would always wonder why I put myself in tougher situations
without even realizing it but it was because I liked to challenge myself and step beyond my current limit. I
believe this will come in handy to me in derby. All in all, I love how in derby you can be a strong
independent individual and be a team with other people of the same kind.

What is your best derby moment to date? The most memorable moment that stands out and may always
be my favorite would be the first day I first saw my future derby teammates practicing, skating around and
then being able to practice with them. The approval from my dad to let me join and the warm acceptance
from the team still amaze me. Being there, getting to meet actual roller derby players, and being able to
join everyone was better than I had ever imagined.

Why do you play roller derby? I play roller derby because I have fallen in love with the sport and because
I have such wonderful teammates that make it a blast each time I meet with them. Playing derby has
brought me a lot of happiness by just playing it and seeing how much I am growing compared to when I
first joined. Seeing my progress and my team's progress excites me. Last of all, Roller Derby makes me
want to grow and better myself not just on the track but as a person off the track as well.
