MENTAL HEALTH IN THE UK
THE FACTS
Words by Charlotte Newton

Each year millions of people have their lives disrupted by a mental
health diagnosis but what does this actually mean?
It’s important to understand how common these problems are in order
to deal with them; whether we are diagnosed ourselves or if we know
someone with a mental health
problem, we all are affected in
some way or another.

KNOW YOUR

ALCOHOL LIMITS
Many of us enjoy an alcoholic drink or two at the end of a busy week but are
we aware of the new alcohol guidelines that were introduced at the beginning
of this year?
Amy Catlin looks at how these guidelines will affect our lifestyle.

On the 8 January 2016, the UK’s Alcohol Guidelines
Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) Examples of 14 units
released new alcohol guidelines to
educate people about alocohol and Six glasses of

These guidelines explain how to - 175ml glass

when drinking. It is advised both Six pints of
men and women should drink no 4% beer
more than 14 units per week.
If you do drink several units, they
say you spread the units over the
whole week, instead of “saving up”
and just going out at the weekend
to have a heavy drinking session.

To keep short-term health risks low, 14 shots of 40% spirits - 25ml glass
they advise you to:
- Limit the total amount of alcohol
consumed in one session,
- Drink the alcohol slowly whilst with
food,
- Drink water regularly in between
your alcoholic drinks to make sure
you are hydrated,
- Avoid high-risk places and always
make sure you are with people you
know, to help ensure you get home
safely.

Effects for men and women: 38
Immediate effects of consuming
too much alchocol include:
nausea and vomiting but there
are many serious effects drinking
can have on the body over
extended periods.
Babies and alcohol:
In regards to pregnant women
and couples planning a
pregnancy, the guidelines state
the safest way to keep risks at a
minimum is to not consume any
alcohol at all.
Drinking is said to raise the risk
of developing long-term effects,
such as:

- Inflicting brain damage,
- A range of cancers,
- Fertility problems,
- Sexual health problems,
- Mental health problems,
- As well as increasing the

chance of vital organ
problems.
Other things to consider:
- People who weigh less will
typically feel the effects of
alcohol quicker because
they have less tissue to
absorb it. Alcohol affects
women quicker than for
men because of their
generally smaller body
size.
- Food slows down the
rate of absorption and
so alcohol will affect you
quicker if you drink on an
empty stomach.
- Fizzy alcoholic drinks
speed up the absorption
process compared to
drinks mixed with water
and fruit juice, as they are
absorbed slower into the
bloodstream.
