Convocation 2023 3 Managing Director, SEGi University & Colleges On this joyous occasion, I applaud you for all that you’ve overcome and accomplished, as we all celebrate the boundless opportunities and successes that lie ahead of you. Graduates, today marks one of the many successes and wins you’re going to have in your life. We’re so proud of you - all that you’ve achieved, and all that you will achieve in your very bright futures. It goes without saying that success is not a one-manshow, you (and I) would not be where you (we) are today if not for the people around us – our family, loved ones, mentors, lecturers (and teachers), colleagues, friends and many more. I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to reflect upon all the people that have contributed to your success today. Take a moment to tell them how grateful you are to them for all that they have done for you. I thought it would also be timely that I introduce to you to a South-African word and philosophy while sharing with you some of my realisations in life. “Ubuntu” Ubuntu in simple terms means “I am, because you are”. It means we are who we are because of the contributions of the people around us - those around us constitute who we are today. “Ubuntu” is a profound philosophy for me because it made me realise that: We are as great as we are today, not only because of the best of people around us, but also the worse – our foes who have taught us life’s hardest and most painful lessons along the way. It reminds us to be thankful to everyone that has crossed our path in life (foes included) because without them – we wouldn’t be who we are today. If the people around us constitute us, we constitute those around us as well. In our daily actions we will inspire, motivate, and move those around us to grow, to expand and to become. It reminds us to be mindful of the individuals we are and the consequences of our positivity or negativity towards others. Choose to be positive towards others at all times. Humanity as a whole is bound together. We achieve ourselves by sharing ourselves with others. This reminds us that our success depends on the success of the people around us (our colleagues, our friends, our family and more) – so always remember to live a life not only to enrich yourselves but devote your life to others around you as well. In closing I hope you have picked up some inspirations from my personal reflections of the word “Ubuntu”. I wish that you will carry within you: A grateful heart. To always be thankful to the people you meet, the circumstances you find yourself in and the lessons you’ve learn along the way; A positive spirit. To always have a positive outlook on life and seek to empower those around you; A devoted attitude towards the greater good. Convocation 2023 5 The University of Sunderland is a life-changing institution, with underpinning ambitions to be student-focused, professions-facing and society-shaping. We have c.27,500 students across our campuses in Sunderland, London, and Hong Kong, and with our worldwide partner institutions, like SEGi College. The University is represented in countries as diverse as Malaysia, Singapore, Botswana, Kenya, Trinidad, Vietnam, and Greece. In addition, of the students studying in the UK, around 40% are from overseas. The University of Sunderland has major strengths in areas such as health, teacher education, business, law, tourism, engineering, computer science, and the creative arts. Our medical school – opened in 2019 – now has 500 students being trained alongside the next generation of nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and physiotherapists and occupational therapists. 6 Convocation 2023 As Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich, I am delighted to welcome all of you, graduates, friends, families and teachers, to today’s ceremony. Today we celebrate new graduates of a university with a history of over 130 years, whose many accolades include best London university for international students in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2023. I also want to celebrate the university’s long and successful partnership with SEGi. As partners, we have much in common. We share the same approach to education, equipping students with academic and professional skills that prepare them for fulfilling careers. In many ways, our partnership reflects the continued globalisation of learning and work. At our three home campuses in the UK, for instance, we have over 38,000 students from more than 170 different countries. Our ability to attract staff, students and research partners from across the world is key to achieving our mission to provide high standards of teaching, learning and research that reflect the needs of communities in the UK and across the globe. Every year, students from SEGi come to the UK to pursue our wide range of Master’s and PhD programmes.
