BERCHTESGADEN
Berchtesgaden is a quaint city with plenty
of charm and character. Nestled in the
heart of the Bavarian Alps and flanked
by the Königssee, Berchtesgaden boasts
views that would make even the most
well-traveled adventurer awe struck. In
Berchtesgaden Markt, narrow streets
open up into gorgeous squares where
markets and restaurants find their home.
The pastel tones of the buildings add a
cheery atmosphere to the eclectic town,
whose residents are always ready to give
tourists a good time. Berchtesgaden was
one of seven cities that bid to host the
1992 Winter Olympics, but Albertville,
France was ultimately chosen.
The salt mines of Berchtesgaden made
it a popular prize during many regional
skirmishes. The land changed hands
multiple times since its historical birth in
1102. Berchtesgaden became a part of
Bavaria in 1810, and has remained a part of
the state ever since. Due to its proximity
to Austria, Berchtesgaden hosts a unique
cultural and architectural diversity. It is
also host to the Dokumentationzentrum
Obersalzberg, a museum that covers the
Nazi regime of the Third Reich. It serves
as a warning, a remembrance, in hopes
that their terror will never again be known
again. The museum was constructed due
to the importance of Berchtesgaden to
the Nazi regime. The museum is the most
comprehensive of any to deal with WWII
and its aftermath.
GRAPHIC
I played around with a
lot of shapes and some
textures and pieced
together a fun, abstract
graphic to use across the
entirety of the project.
I was inspired by the
snowy peaks of the
Bavarian Alps, the rough
cliffs of Mt. Watzmann,
and the culture of
Berchtesgaden. The
textures are pulled from
nature, the angular
shapes reference the
many mountains, and
the circles are a call
to the beer fests that
are held every year in
Berchtesgaden. They
represent the bubbles
in beer, but can also be
a call to the mist on the
mountains.

COLORS
The colors chosen for
the logo and all other

blue-green hues come
from Konigssee, the lake
in proximity to the city.
The blues and greys
come from the Bavarian
Alps nearby.
PICTOGRAMS
The pictograms are
angular to reflect
the logo. The colors
are picked from the
predetermined scheme
and an oval behind
unites them.

DIGITAL AND ANALOG
Technology is key, but paper goods cannot be left behind. Olympic events draw
people of all age groups, who will inevitably want to experience the event in
their own way. Having both digital and physical information available is key to a
successful winter olympic games.
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Pamphlets will have a list of scheduled events
and times, as well as an introduction to the
games and a map on the back. All of the same
information will be available online and within
the Berchtesgaden Olympic Games app. The
website and app will update in real time with
scores, medals won, etc. The app can be
adjusted to ping the user when an event they
are wanting to watch is about to start, as well as
notify them when a favorite competitor places.
