ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MOVABLE WALLS. Movable walls allow business owners and homeowners the flexibility to create the floor plan they need out of a wide-open space. Movable walls are partitions that can increase the functionality of an open area such as a loft apartment, office space, conference room or banquet hall. These systems can provide privacy and good acoustic insulation for work and living environments. Uses: Movable wall panels are an ideal way to separate areas and create privacy in a room. > Homeowners can select wall panels that create a solid wall and door for entry into a bedroom or living area or use glass panels to define separate areas of the living space while keeping the open floor concept of the room. > In a business environment, movable walls are a quick way to set up offices and change the layout of the building space to accommodate flexibility and efficiency. > Hotels and conference centres can use movable walls to create additional functional areas within the available space - for instance, a banquet hall or a convention centre in a hotel can double up with a movable wall partition to accommodate two functions or conferences simultaneously. Technical Details 23
The sound insulation of a movable wall is defined by International Standard Laboratory measurements in accordance with ISO 140-3. In building practice however, there will never be an ideal laboratory situation. The sound insulation between two rooms will always be affected by the surrounding construction. Generally the sound insulation will deviate approximately 5 to 10 dB from the laboratory measurement. Sound waves will pass through and under flooring (carpet), through walls and windows, above suspended ceilings and through ventilation ducts. These aspects must all be taken into account when selecting the appropriate wall system and the required demands of the rest of the building. Adding integrated pass door(s) also affects the sound insulation. This, in combination with proper operation and maintenance of the wall, will define whether the desired sound insulation is achieved or not. We will help you with pleasure! Through our long experience we can advise you at the design stage in order to improve the acoustics of your room. In order to effectively specify a system to control the sound in an environment, we must first identify the types and levels of sounds we are trying to control. Then, decide on what level of acoustic performance is needed. The “Typical Sound Pressure Levels” chart indicates the sound pressure levels of everyday sounds. Sound Levels are expressed in decibels (dB). The decibel scale ranges from zero (threshold of audibility) to 140 dB which is the threshold of ear pain and beyond. The chart is a practical way to help gauge the sound levels of your environment. Sound Insulation Levels dB Common Sounds 140 Gun shot or fireworks 130 Jack hammer 120 Siren 110 iPod at peak volume 100 Rock concert 90 25 Piece orchestra 80 Printing press 70 Sports car 57 Conversation speech 50 Average office 40 Quite radio 30 Private office 20 Quite conversation 10 Whisper 0 Sound proof room dB Rating Result Area of application 36-44 Normal voices may be intelligible Office spaces and meeting rooms 41-45 Normal voices may be barely intelligible Schools and meeting rooms 45-47 Normal voices can’t be heard unintelligible Boardrooms and Conference centres 47-49 Raised voices barely unintelligible Hotel function rooms 53-58 Loud amplified sound muted Convention centres 24
More comfortable and convenient the solutions come with semi-automatic operation. The top and bottom pressure seals are controlled by an electrical device. Closing or releasing of the adjusting panel will be controlled electrically by a key-switch positioned on one side of the panel. In order to overcome a power failure, we supply an emergency transformer, which can be used when the main transformer of the wall is not able to give 24 V to the wall. With the emergency transformer, panels can be overruled and released. This transformer is not battery operated and needs to be connected with a normal 230 V main power supply. Working closely with the architects, Häfele Slido W-Park11 80A was specified to enable the building’s interior spaces to be quickly and efficiently transformed for a variety of purposes and support the students and teachers to flourish in the school environment. The Häfele Slido W-Park11 80A walls support the design brief to maximise flexibility and provide suitable learning spaces by minimising sound transfer between incompatible activities. The use of two, parallel operable wall systems, creates 3 smaller learning spaces which can be quickly expanded for larger groups as required. The adaptable design creates an opportunity to design a building with a smaller, more efficient footprint, as large singular, dedicated spaces are no longer required and more outdoor space can be retained for student amenity. Located in the auditorium sound transference was an important consideration for the wall selection. With semi-automatic compression seals on both top and bottom the Slido Wall P60 110A can achieve an acoustic rating of 57dB, making it an ideal choice for this application. The wall panels are clad in both a pin board and magnetic white board material to allow multi-purpose use of space. The first wall 3m high by 9m long creates the link between the old building and the new. A pair of access doors positioned in the wall also provide safety egress for the new extension. The second wall is a compound wall made of 3 separable portions, the overall span reaching 25m in length. Careful consideration of position and planning was necessary to avoid structural elements. Two of the moveable panels within the wall are made with very specific angles to allow the wall to manoeuvre around pillars.
