LEADERSHIP MOMENT:
“Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in
your absence.”- Sheryl Sandberg (COO, Facebook)
Greetings, my Lovely Lambda Omega Sorors!
As we head into the Summer break, I would like to take this opportunity to Thank You for a
Job Well Done! Thank you for your continued efforts to work outside the box, ensuring that
the Lambda Omega Chapter carried out all International Targets of this illustrious sisterhood,
under the Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service platform. Supreme Basileus,
Soror Glenda Glover and her International Leadership Committees have truly elevated our
worldwide levels of service. Her administration will not only go down in Alpha Kappa
Alpha’s history, but the world has taken a renewed glance at the great contributions and
initiatives promoted by our Sorority. During the 70th Boule, a very important transition will
occur, the Sorority will introduce a new administrative platform that will guide us for the
next four-years. The First International Supreme Anti-Basileus, Soror Danette Anthony Reed
will be introducing her strategic outline, as the incoming Supreme Basileus. Exciting things
are on the way, and I believe the over 110,000 active Sorors will be ready to lead the charge.
The Marvelous Mid-Atlantic Region will also be embarking on a transition. Madam Regional Director, Soror Jennifer
King Congleton will be turning over the “Regional Gavel” to Madam Regional Director Elect, Soror Nadine Vargas
Stewart. The International Nominating Committee provided the Region with Soror Stewart’s vision statement. I vow
to be a leader who's impactful, fiscally responsible, responsive, and delivers as the region excels. “Her vision for this
region is to protect the rich legacy we stand on, with careful thought on how to move the region to the next level of
sustainability. To achieve this, she plans to: 1. recognize and respect the diversity of our undergraduate and graduate
members, fostering a connected sisterhood; 2. boldly lead the region to new heights of service and sisterhood; 3.
provide opportunities to develop and nurture new leaders across the region.”
In November of 2022, Lambda Omega will also have the important opportunity to elect new officers that will guide us
to higher heights. It has been a blessing to serve as the Basileus of this amazing chapter. Our goals during January of
2021 through December of 2022, were clear – Strengthening Our Foundation: Sisterhood and Sisterliness. The
overarching theme was simple, but rich – Love and Respect for the Sorority and one another.
During our break, I would encourage you to conduct a self-examination. How have or how could you improve upon
the task of being your Soror’s sister. In May, I had the opportunity to attend the Peninsula Executive Leadership
Forum, where Alexis Swann, President, Peninsula and Williamsburg TowneBank, was the keynote speaker. She
provided several points of leadership: Always lead with love; Be kind; Learn to appreciate other’s difference; Serve your
team, Leave a legacy; Help people be strong; Lead with integrity; and Know your job and organization. It was an
awesome event.
I look forward to seeing you at the 70th Boule, - The Magic of Excellence In the City Beautiful.
Sisterly,
Soror Samantha RDL Richards, MPA
Basileus

Greetings Sorors,
Father’s Day is celebrated during the month of June. Take time to visit, call, or remember the
special men in your life who have supported, protected, and loved you and your family.
Happy Father’s Day to the amazing men who have impacted your life.
It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of the 2018-2022 Exemplifying Excellence
Through Sustainable Service programs. It has been a wonderful journey. We have learned to
pivot how we deliver service. We have discovered the hidden talents of sorors and developed
new skills in the virtual world. While we have missed our in-person gatherings, we have been
able to adapt and grow during the pandemic. As we regroup and prepare to get back
together, bring the skills and lessons learned so that our chapter can enhance the way we
impact young and seasoned members of the community. We do not want to revert back to
the way we have done things before. Let us plan to move forward and do things better than
we did before.
Leadership is a vital component of how we function and achieve our goals. During the 70th Boule, we will meet our
new administration and the new programs will be revealed. As we prepare for the new programs, we need sorors to
team up and serve as committee chairmen. If you are interested in serving as a committee chairman, please reach out to
me. We realize there may be some hesitation since members do not know what programs will be launched. However,
do not let that deter you from sharing your desires as you do not have to committee until after the programs are
launched. We have some exciting activities lined up to get chairmen equipped with the skills and resources to launch
target programs. Let’s get ready for this next chapter of excellence!
We have come to that time of the year when sorors must take time for self-care and family care over the summer. I
hope you find time to enjoy your hobbies, read a book of your choice, take a much need trip, tackle a home project, or
simply exhale a little more. Relax, refresh, and recharge during the summer break! When we return, we will be ready to
continue delivering excellence as we serve with love. I cannot wait to see you in August!
Warm sisterly regards,
Soror Karen Bazemore-Person

Greetings Sorors,
Welcome to June, and June 1 was National Say Something Nice Day. The purpose of
this holiday is to counteract mistreatment and the lack of respect and common courtesy
that is increasing among people in today’s world. I remember my grandmother telling
me “If you cannot say something nice, do not say anything at all.” Think about the nicest
soror you know. Take a prompt from them and put one of their better attributes into
practice. Say something nice to or about a soror. Let us bring a smile to a soror’s face for
the utter joy of seeing them smile. Seek no reward other than knowing that the soror’s
day is better because a nice word was delivered.
Sorors please take time today and throughout the summer to stay connected with as many Lambda Omega Chapter sorors
as you can. Sorors share your thoughts. Staying connected can simply mean communicating more frequently. We want to
continue to reinforce soror relationships. With this in mind, pull out your phone or your pretty pink and green stationery
and put your heart on paper. Sorors you all can share a memory that popped up or simply tell a soror what you love most
about them. You all can make this a daily, weekly, or monthly practice throughout the summer.
Our “Two in 2022” Secret Sorors for the month of April will reveal themselves at the Lambda Omega Chapter meeting on

Glimpses of Gold
Golden Soror Sharon Urquhart Richardson
A Global View
Soror Sharon, a Golden Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ®, was initiated in 1972 into the
Gamma Theta Chapter at Hampton (Institute) University. She has been in the Lambda Omega Chapter since 1980.
Soror Sharon has served as the Anti-Basileus of this chapter, long serving chair of the Global Perspectives Committee
and was appointed to the Mid-Atlantic Region’s Global Impact Committee by Soror Joyce Henderson, 18th Mid-
Atlantic Regional Director.
Soror Sharon was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the youngest of six children in the Strickland family. After the
sudden death of her parents when she was five years old, she was brought to Newport News by Samuel and Naomi
Urquhart, her maternal uncle and his wife, who lovingly adopted her as their only child. She was an honor student in
Newport News and Hampton public schools where her life was positively influenced by teachers who later became
her sorors. Soror Sharon graduated with honors from Hampton Institute in 1974 with a B.A. in Sociology and
continued her education at The Ohio State University in Columbus where she earned a Master of Social Work
Degree in 1976. She has certifications as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and an Elementary Counselor.
After graduating from OSU, Soror Sharon, her Liberian husband and their infant son, moved to Liberia, West Africa,
where she affiliated with the Eta Beta Omega Chapter, our sorority's first international chapter. As one of the
country's first master’s level trained social workers, she was employed by the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social
Welfare as Director of Rehabilitation. In that position, she established that country's first School for the Blind in
1977. She was later made the Director of Family Welfare and was instrumental in the establishment of the SOS
Children’s (Orphanage) Village-Liberia in 1980. Both facilities continue to serve Liberian children. A coup d’etat in
1980 made it necessary for Soror Sharon and her children, John and Corey, to flee Liberia to Newport News. Upon
her return, she became an Assistant Professor at Hampton University, teaching Sociology and Social Work. She
worked as a School Social Worker in Newport News Public Schools for 33 years, retiring in 2014. Soror Sharon
reared her two sons as a single parent and is now a grandmother of five granddaughters.
Soror Sharon is a member of Second Baptist Church East End and is active in the Women’s Ministry. She is also a
40-year member and past president of the Newport News Chapter of The Links, Incorporated; has served on their
National Ethics and Standards Committee, was appointed as the National Director of International Programs, and
currently serves as National Chairman of The Links’ educational programs in Africa. She has served the city of
Newport News on numerous boards and commissions. Soror Sharon introduced Operation Smile to Liberia and
traveled with them as a volunteer on three medical missions. Her humanitarian service, earned her one of Liberia's
highest honors, bestowed by the President, The Order of the Star of Africa. She was the Peninsula Pan Hellenic
Council’s Greek of the Year; the first recipient of the AKA Mid-Atlantic Region’s Leah K. Frazier Award for Service
from a Global Perspective; Evelyn Syphax AKA Mid-Atlantic Regional Award for Creative Expression; Hampton
Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated International Development Award, and was
recognized as an outstanding graduate of Huntington High School. In her leisure time, Soror Sharon enjoys tap and
line dancing; traveling, painting, reading, and riding her pink and green tricycle, she calls her "AKAcycle", along the
bay.
Her advice to younger sorors: “Live a life of faith, love, purpose, determination and humor.”
