One Day When Everything Changed

“Where are we? Wait this street seems familiar! Are we inside the game?” exclaimed
George excitedly.
Earlier the same day:
It was midnight when George and his friends Jim, Jenny and Sooty who had come over to
George’s house for a sleepover had decided to play a newly released online game named
‘Robbers'. In the game, the players played as a group of robbers and were required to steal
the Kohinoor diamond from a famous museum to win.
As they began playing, a blinding light shone in front of them and, on opening their eyes,
they found themselves in a totally different place.
“Where are we? wait this street We’re inside the game!” exclaimed George excitedly. The
initial excitement of being inside a game soon faded away as they began worrying about
how they would return back home.
“How do we get out?” panicked Jim.
“I guess….we have to clear the game; we steal the diamond from the museum!” said Sooty
grimly. The children thought this was the best option they had and, thus, began planning
their heist.
“With the map and tools we got from the game we should be able to find a way into the
museum!” said Jenny.

The kids were intelligent and after exploring
for a while they discovered a secret
underground passage, which led them directly
to the diamond. The children disabled the
lasers guarding the diamond using the tools
they had received from the game.
“Hurray we have done it!” the children
exclaimed in joy.
As Sooty was about to pick up the diamond,
gunshots were heard and he fell to the ground
followed by Jim and George. Blood stained the
white marble floor of the museum red and Jenny shrieked in horror ,“Snipers!”
Tears streamed down her cheeks and she desperately tried to grab the diamond to end the
game which suddenly felt like a nightmare. Just as she was about to grab it, she felt
something pierce through her stomach and she fell to the ground. A voice boomed 'GAME
OVER' and her body went cold.
A few days later it was in the newspaper:
MISSING - JIM JONES, JENNY THOMPSON, GEORGE PARKER AND SOOTY

Daniel Anthony the Undervalued Reformer

“I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be
taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand.”

Daniel Anthony (1794-1862) is a reformer of the 18th century who gave up all he had to
contribute towards gender equality and to abolish slavery. Daniel Anthony was always an
abolitionist, which meant he wanted an end to slavery, and he was a pacifist also. During
the first half of the 19th century, his daughter Susan B. Anthony (also a well-known activist)
came home to explain to her father that she wasn’t being taught mathematics as her teacher
refused to teach to girls. Upon hearing this Daniel took it in his own hands and started a
school where anyone can learn regardless of their gender. Daniel also ran a cotton mill and
owned a small store in his neighborhood and barely made enough money to survive. He
instilled values of being a pacifist, working hard and treating family and people equally in
his daughter. This must have worked as his daughter grew up to be one of the most
important activists of her time.
Even after making so less money, Daniel Anthony spent all his money and lifesavings for
the betterment of the girls in his neighborhood by spending it on making a school. Most
people in that time ran after money but Daniel ran after amelioration of the society.

Grit, it means to have courage, to be mentally strong and to be fearless. A person with true
grit has passion and perseverance, a person who works hard to follow through on
Commitments has true grit.

Grit is needed to achieve your goal, your dreams. Even
if you are born without grit, it’s not an excuse. You
can achieve grit if you start seeking for your goals,

Perseverance - The Musk Way!

SpaceX (Space Exploration technologies) was founded by Elon musk in 2002 to
revolutionise the aerospace industry and make affordable spaceflight a reality. Elon
Musk invested 100 million dollars in SpaceX initially hoping to launch at least one
rocket into space but the first three attempts failed. Elon thought after the second fail
“We can afford three launches.” And, then the third one failed!

After burning through 100 million dollars most people would have quit and closed
the company but Elon persevered and invested more money for the 4th launch.
SpaceX was almost at the point of bankruptcy and going for another launch was
risky, yet Elon did it and their fourth launch was successful; it helped SpaceX land a
commercial contract with NASA valued at roughly $1.6 billion.

Today, SpaceX is valued to be worth a 100 billion USD! The message is believing in
your dreams and do not give up!

Mystery of a Long-Abandoned Wrecked Ship

"Luna, you are not going anywhere alone. You are still a small child, said her mother. But
mom... All my cousins are going. I also want to go, please let me go, pleaded Luna. "I will
have to call Julian and ask whether he is going or not cause you last time told you are
going with them and then you disappeared in thin air. I really got worried sick." "I know
mom, I told I was sorry" "Okay, let me call Julian now. Hello child, is everything fine? I
just wanted to know whether you guys are going or not? Oh really, so what all she should
carry. Ok Thank you. I will send her in some time. Luna was as happy as a pig in mud.
She took everything she needed for hiking and off she went with her cousins! All her
cousins reached the island and was having the refreshing time not realising that they are
going to have an epic adventure together. The sounds of birds, the sound of the sea
crawling onto the sand. The cool breeze brushing against their faces. Moreover, the
tantalizing scent of the washed-up waves, coconut, and pineapple are all mixed into one.
“Julian, this water is so relaxing that I am feeling like sleeping over here. Come and join
me, it’s really so relaxing that I even forgot my aching legs due to riding bicycle so long.”
exclaimed Dick, Julian’s little brother. “Nah, I don’t feel like going into the water, I want
to play with my little pet dog Timothy since it’s been a long time.” Replied Julian. All
were having a wonderful time till the evening.
Look! The clouds are becoming darker. I hope it doesn’t rain anytime soon, or our tent
will get soaked.” pointed Eloise. Oh no, we must find a place where there is a shelter. It
seemed as if the clouds heard her because at that moment the rain pored down heavily.
Come after me everyone, I can see a wooden shade over there, “It must be a hidden ship
and there must be a cabin. We will all take shelter over there.” Said Julian. Everyone
reached safely and they slept under the shade since they were very tired to find out if it
was a ship or not. Luna woke up early in the morning and thinking where she was.

59 |Shri Darpan

Within few mins she realised she was on a hiking trip with her favourite cousins. “This is
why I like holidays, there is no parents to shout, you can do anything you want with your
friends and no tension of studies also.” Then she remembered Julian’s words and woke
everyone up to explore the shade which was a ship. “Everyone, get up we have to explore
the shade which actually a ship. The other part of the ship is hidden behind the coconut
tree” exclaimed Luna.

Excited, everyone woke up and started to follow
Luna. They started to go behind the trees to have a
better view. They went into the ship and saw that it
was not an ordinary one. From outside it was very
hasty and dusty, but it looked like a royal palace from
the inside. “It seems as if it is a royal palace from the
olden times.” “I think we have teleported over here!”
Then suddenly, Timothy started barking at the
glowing keys leading to the secret room. They
grabbed the keys and started exploring the rest. Suddenly they found a locked room. Dick
remembered about the keys and opened the room. As soon as they entered the room, they
saw something they never thought they will ever see in their lives. They saw a jail made
from platinum. And the room was nearly covered with gold, diamonds, silver, and
platinum. “Am I dreaming or is this real?” said Elosie pinching herself to check if she was
really seeing or not. The poor child must be so lonely right. We must save him now. Hello,
what’s your name? “Um mm mm mm Myyy nammme iss Georrgee.” Stammering George.
I have been kidnaped by someone. Please help me!” “Don’t worry we will help you. Can
you tell me who kidnapped you” comforted Julian. “I don’t know, the person came out of
nowhere when I was in a ship and blindfold me. I think someone is coming, quickly hide.
“We will not hide, instead we will fight. We have Timothy to distract him.” Five together
is more than one strong person. We can capture you and send it to the police. The person
was tortured to death. He was bleeding very badly, and Luna snatched the keys from the
pocket. Come with us we are going to send you home. Suddenly the boy turns into the
fairy and thanked them. The fairy asked a wish they wanted. Suddenly Luna heard some
weird voices. Luna, Luna Get up! Don’t you want to go hiking with your cousins? Luna
wakes up, looks around, sighs, and says Alas, it is all a dream and springs out of the bed
because she has to go to hiking remember?

Education Is the Most Important Part of Our Life

The widespread outbreak of coronavirus has led to moving towards online classes by
schools, colleges, coaching’s, etc. Although online classes were already in place in many
places, COVID-19 paved a new way of teaching all over the country through online classes.

Pros of Online Classes

Study Anywhere - Online classes are available to a student sitting anywhere in the world
provided he/she has a proper internet connection.

60 |Shri Darpan

Elimination of travel time and cost - Online classes have eliminated the time and cost
required to reach the school or college.

Cons of Online Classes

Network Issues - One of the biggest problems of online classes is network issues. It has been
seen students struggle a lot to connect to the session due to internet issues.

Continuous use of Mobile / Laptop - One major concern is that students have to be on
electronic devices continuously for 5−10 hours.

Curious Cars - My Glorious Passion

Playing video games and spending time with choicest friends are one of the main avigations
of teenagers. Aren’t they? However, in my case it is a bit quirky as I have been attracted to
unique designs of cars which most
children don’t really adore.

I was two, when I was strolling
leisurely around the house, I sat in one
of our cars and had accidentally moved
the handbrake of a Hyundai i10
Automatic vehicle which was parked on a slopy ramp and the car was about to crash into
the other one however at the right time my mother was at rescue immediately and saved
me from an accident.
After this adventurous incident, I had developed an unknown interest on cars which has
opened a bigger door to my car’s knowledge. Initially I started keenly observing the names
of every car and its manufacturer, followed by learning the basic names of spare parts like
the engine, body, boot, ignition plug etc.
Then I had explored more about the interiors, the segment leading features, moving
experience and the engine capacities. Nevertheless, observed power and torque output
along with the engine options. Gradually, by referring the cars in India, I had also
expanded the horizon of my technical about cars, by grasping the norms and emissions in
our country.
After electric cars entering our market with a boom and started selling like hot cakes,
though many doubts about the battery capacity of the vehicle, the retuning of the
suspension, the range had given a better experience to the owners, so I had researched
about the electric cars that are sold in the foreign countries as they have an exquisite line
up of electric cars, and one prominent manufacturer which Indians see as the apple of their
eye is Tesla.
To spread my knowledge about cars and their specifications I had started a YouTube
channel few months ago where I do comparisons and reviews as well.

Grit Mindset

What does grit mindset mean?

It’s the Mindset of people who don’t give up after setbacks and keep trying till they

succeed.

Difference between a Grit mindset and Fixed mindset

Grit Mindset Fixed Mindset

Doesn’t give up after failing Gives up after failing once
Learns from mistakes Gives up after doing a mistake

Sees others success as Inspiration Sees others success as a threat

Views criticism as an opportunity to learn Views criticism as a personal attack

Benefits of a Grit Mindset
 Ability to Grow your intelligence
 Persistence to Setbacks
 Ability to Grow your confidence and self-esteem
 Surety of success as you do not stop trying
 Having Hope
 Embracing Challenges

“Work hard. Be smart. Don’t give up.”

GRIT

There are two paths we can take
The hard path or the easy path
Some not knowing better make a mistake

Going down the easier road
To cut down work to sunbathe in the light
And easily enough they learn the easy road load

Going down the longer path
To find the nothing but gravel for miles
Has a certain appeal and a rewarding after math

Even Gravel has a certain appeal
They make us into a diamond in rough

And our future is seen as genial
The easier route takes nothing at all
You walk down with ease and a gentle breeze

But at the end has a heavy toll
The longer route takes grit

It is harder and more motivation is needed
And at times you wish to forfeit
But keeping an eye on the end

And you get what you wanted with effort
The reward makes you content

For this is what shapes every hero
The take the hard path

And your reward will be bestowed

The Power of Mindset - Change and See

"The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing that you will make a
mistake" And "Mistakes are proof that you are trying."
I am confident that you have already understood that I am going to discuss about growth
mindset and fixed mindset.
Whoa! What is that you ask? A growth mindset is nothing but recognizing that there is
always scope for improvement. It enables us to keep trying with great resilience.
Let’s take an example. I go to a dance competition and try my best but with no luck; therefore,
I return home dejected. If I have a fixed mindset, my thoughts would be "I'll never be good
at this! I am giving up!" or "You have to be born with talent to be good " or "There is no
point in trying again! Obviously, I am bound to fail again".
However, if I have a growth mind set, my thoughts then will be "A new challenge ahead!” or
"I can train my brain through practice!" or “I think I need to pick up new skills to get success

63 |Shri Darpan

in this field” or “Right now I am not good at it but I think if I were to create a plan and try
again, I will master this”
Thus, with a growth mindset, our flaws just become a to-do list of things to improve upon
unlike in a fixed mind set where our flaws become a failure, set in stone, which nothing can
change.
To learn and grow from our mistakes and to develop a growth mindset, let's follow a simple
mantra. Think about a situation when you didn't get something right and someone else
pointed out your mistake. Reflect upon what you told yourself when you didn't get it right?
What did that person tell you about your mistake? How did you respond to her? What were
the actions you chose to take next? And, how you achieved success in the end. Lastly,
introspect upon what you learned from making that mistake. With this simple mantra of
introspection and reflection, you can understand whether you exhibited a growth mindset or
fixed mindset.
What can we achieve with a fixed mindset? Nothing except a sense of isolation and dejection
as we feel that the whole world is turning against us.
However, with a growth mind set all of us have chance to become great entrepreneurs or
thought leaders or champions for a cause and bring a change to the world.
To conclude, I would like to state that developing a growth mindset is not easy; it is our
responsibility to be mindful, to be aware and to take conscious steps each day to bring a
change.
As Carol Dweck said, “Love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on
learning.”

How Traditional Schooling Helps Imagine

having to wake up every morning without having to look forward to school, meeting
and greeting friends, and exchanging last evening’s news. Imagine not discussing confusing
questions from yesterday’s homework with classmates, sitting together for lunch, or

laughing at their jokes. Imagine not having anywhere to go
to, physically or virtually, except for home, not having the
facilities to learn and enjoy at the same time! Sounds glum,
right?

So, what is a School? A School is a place to go to learn and
enjoy. A school is a major part of our childhood, and
provides the basis for the future. It mirrors a society
or community - everybody plays a role in it. The teacher is
the head. She has the responsibility of passing on knowledge to the students. The students
have to ensure that they complete the work given and learn. Everybody helps each other.
Cooperation is the key.

Even in educationally - advanced countries like the U.S., only 3-4% of eligible school-going
children are homeschooled.

But why? What makes School better than learning from home? For one, School allows for
association and peer learning and enhances the ability to express and exchange thoughts

64 |Shri Darpan

and ideas. This happens through group projects and activities, through sports and other
physical and outdoor play, which is not only good for health, but strengthens skills like
teamwork and sportsmanship. It gives us a professional environment, which provides
exposure and room for experiments. School has a competitive environment, which prepares
us for the world outside. Some examples of this are Interschool and Interhouse
competitions, sports, and games. Experiential learning at school enhances public skills,
which are highly important. Different students and teachers have different personalities,
which enables us to imbibe qualities from other people; we also learn from observation what
we should not do.  School teaches us many life skills like communication, collaboration,
confidence, and other social skills. It teaches us problem solving and reasoning. It teaches
us time management and discipline, through timely submissions, uniforms, dress codes, and
other rules. It teaches us to adjust, accommodate, adapt and adopt. In other words, it
prepares us for the real world.

To sum up, I firmly believe that, 360-degree learning and personality development, can
only happen by going to school, as it opens us up to limitless possibilities, therefore, helping
us build a strong and sound future.

The Story of Grit and Determination

When 19-year-old Jyoti entered the gates of the college to appear for the examinations,
they could not see her hands at all!
Their reaction was justified as Jyoti, a student of Bachelor of Arts first year, indeed did not
have hands. She had lost both her hands in an accident a few years ago. What remained was
only a little over half portion of the left arm.
The staff on invigilation duty in the examination room was in for more surprise when they
handed over the paper to Jyoti wondering as to how the girl would write the answers.
“How will you write the paper? You don’t have hands,” said the invigilators. They got a
prompt reply: “I do have determination.” Then Jyoti brought out her pen, put it between
her teeth and giving it the right direction with the remaining half portion of her left arm,
began to write the answers of her home science paper. The surprise continued for the staff.
Just when they were wondering if Jyoti required more time to write the answers, the gritty
girl handed them over her answer script ten minutes before the scheduled time and quietly
left the examination hall. A resident of Rajhaua village at Jyotiba Phule Nagar, Jyoti had to
face a lot of difficulties after losing both her hands. “I wanted to study but people said that I
will never be able to write. I wanted to prove them wrong,” Jyoti said adding that she had
to practise a lot to learn to write with her teeth.
This is a real-life story which occurred in Ramabai Ambedkar Government College in
Uttar Pradesh. This story not only proves that this is about determination and passion but
it also proves that disability is not a disadvantage.
“Consistency of efforts is everything"

Home Schooling

The 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln, the inventor of the
telephone Alexander Graham Bell, the tennis legend Serena Williams have something in
common – They are all products of home schooling.
I am Sreshta Posani and today I will be writing on the topic “Is Homeschooling better than
School Education?”.
Homeschooling is a customized learning environment to meet every child's individual
needs. It allows the student to think and learn outside the box. The world is their classroom.
And resources abound in the community. The critical skills that homeschooling teaches is to
get children to learn how to learn. Once that is taught, they learn anything they are
interested in. Exciting, isn’t it!
Here we are not trying to do ‘School at Home’; rather we are doing Home-schooling i.e., we
are not trying to replicate the time, style, or content of a classroom. Rather we are trying to
cultivate a lifestyle of learning in which learning takes place all the time.

66 |Shri Darpan

The common notion about homeschooled kids is
that they sit at home all day, studying. That they
don’t have any extra-curricular activities or
sports. That there is no competition and that they
have helicopter parents hovering around them.

The truth is homeschoolers DO have friends
though they might not be interacting with them
all the time. And they Do a lot of co-curricular activities because they have free time that
they spend it on what they want, thus honing their skills. Thanks to this, they also have a
flourishing social life.

A lot of kids in school today haven’t learnt how to communicate with adults outside of the
school context because they are not used to it. Homeschoolers, on the other hand, can easily
connect to people of any age group because they have actually seen and are experiencing
the real world!
It is also important to note that interactions among children at school are not necessarily
healthy because they could be victims of peer pressure and bullying.
Research has shown that homeschooled children achieve more in the social, emotional, and
psychological spheres. They have high emotional and empathy quotient.
Thus, I would like to rest my case by saying that homeschooling allows you the freedom to
step off the highway of learning and take a more scenic route along a dirt road and end
up being more holistically developed in multiple areas.

 Sreshta Posani, VIII C

What is Grit?

Grit is the perseverance and passion to achieve long–term goals.
And what does having grit mean?
To have grit means you have courage and show the strength of your character. ... A person
who works really hard to follow through on commitments has true grit.

Grit is not a word you hear often, is it?
It turns out, like many skills, you can measure
someone's grit. Research showed that the more grit
you have, the more likely you are to succeed. Each
time, more grit was directly correlated with more
success.
How to improve Grit
So often we think that grit is about how we respond to extreme situations, but what about
everyday circumstances?
Mental toughness is like a muscle. It needs to be worked to grow and develop.
Choose to do the tenth rep when it would be easier to just do nine. Choose to create when
it would be easier to consume. Choose to ask the extra question when it would be easier to
accept. Prove to yourself in a thousand tiny ways that you have enough guts to get in the
ring and do battle with life.
