ISB High School Wind Ensemble International School Bangkok (ISB) has been the premier international school in Thailand since its opening in 1951. The ISB Middle and High School band program has had a strong tradition with about 250 students enrolling annually. Each year, about two dozen ISB band students pass competitive auditions to be selected for honor band festivals overseas, in locations such as China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. In addition, ISB's High School hosts the annual Bangkok International Band Festival, where over 200 band students from international schools in Thailand and abroad rehearse and perform with guest conductors. In the 2023-2024 school year, the ISB High School Wind Ensemble consists of about 70 students in grades 9-12. It has been our pleasure recently to collaborate with the SPIM band, and we are excited to perform in concert together. Our gratitude goes to Khun Chaiphat (Punch) Tripipitsiriwat and the whole team that has organized today's event, as well as to administrators and staff at PIM and SPIM who have welcomed ISB's Wind Ensemble.

Music Background “Playlist the Concert” SPIMxISB Fields Overture - Hiroki Takahashi Commissioned by Ohda Junior High School Band, Ibaraki, Osaka and premiered in their 2013 annual summer concert. The purpose of this work was to offer junior high school students the opportunity to work on and acquire fundamentals of band performance through a fun piece of music. Back in my school band days, the music of Swearingen, Huckeby and Barnes ("Alvamar Overture") was considered essential educational band literature. They were the inspiration for this work utilizing the typical overture form, fast-slow-fast. I am not sure what impression contemporary school students get from my writing, but I aim to write music that is both enjoyable and memorable.Another aspect I consider when composing is having a lyrical melodic line (in Japanese, we say "singing", or expressive melody). Since musical instruments cannot literally sing, it is crucial for instrumentalists to express their thoughts and emotions through techniques such as musical phrasing and tonal blending. In the context of structure, a change of pace occurs twice in this work, known as A-B-A form. However, there is more to music then simple form. Change of character is an important part of the musical storyline just as many different scenes make up a movie or a novel. I would like young musicians to participate in a complete musical experience. Therefore, I am eager to compose a work where school students can develop both technique and musical expressiveness. The title "Fields Overture" is based on the nature-rich field scenery surrounding Ohda Junior High School. The impression is of a horse running freely in a magnificent meadow where brilliant rays of the sun are shining.
Music Background “Playlist the Concert” SPIMxISB Fearless – Carol Brittin Chambers The original band composition Fearless was composed in 2023 by Carol Brittin Chambers, an American composer and member of the music faculty at Texas Lutheran University. This piece was commissioned by the Union County Bandmasters Association, North Carolina, USA, for the All County Honors Band. The composer wrote, "We all face challenges in our life and sometimes find ourselves having to move out of our comfort zone in order to face them. This piece is dedicated to those moments, when we are able to dig down deep and find the resolve, courage, and strength that we need to keep going. This piece is about being Fearless!" We Are - Kouhei Tanaka arranged by Seiji Miyagawa ONE PIECE is a Japanese manga series about the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew searching for the mythical treasure ONE PIECE. Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, ONE PIECE has been serialized in the manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997. In 2015, it received a Guinness World Record for "most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author." The series has circulated in over 60 countries and regions and has sold over 500 million copies. In addition, a TV anime series based on (and called) ONE PIECE has been running since 1999 with over one thousand episodes. There have been 27 different opening theme songs for the anime series, but the original theme song "We Are!" by Kouhei Tanaka is one of the most popular. This band arrangement is in the same key signature as the original song and features solos on the trombone and alto saxophone. The Merry-Go-Round of Life - Jazz Version" from Howl's Moving Castle” – Joe Hisaishi Howl's Moving Castle is a 2004 Studio Ghibli film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The movie is an adaptation of the novel Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, in which Sophie, who was turned into an elderly woman by a witch, encounters a wizard named Howl and they journey to break her curse. The movie was one of the most commercially successful Japanese films in history. "The Merry-Go-Round of Life" is the main theme of the movie, composed by Joe Hisaishi, who also composed for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997), and Spirited Away (2001). "The Merry-Go-Round of Life" is written in three-four time, expressing characters' emotion and the flow of life and time in waltz style. In the band arrangement, this theme is set in an exciting jazz style with swing rhythm, featuring several solos on piano, flute, saxophone and trumpet. In the middle of the piece, the original elegant waltz style makes a brief appearance.
Music Background “Playlist the Concert” SPIMxISB Cinderella – Tattoo Colour arranged Sutimon Musakophat One of the most popular songs from tattoo Colour from Album “จงเพราะ” the lyric in this song inspired from one of the most popular bedtime stories “Cinderlla”. from ballroom dancing scenes and the midnight’s time Still on My Mind The attractive song Still on My Mind dates from 1965 when its royal composer was thirty-eight. The previous year, King Bhumibol had become the twenty-third person and the first person in Asia to receive the coveted Certificate of Bestowal of Honorary Membership on behalf of Vienna’s University of Music and Performing Arts. Still on My Mind was His Majesty’s thirty-seventh composition and was the first song for which the king himself wrote the English lyrics. The Thai lyrics were later written by Professor Prasert Na Nagara who became the first chairman of the council of International Buddhist College. This is a splendid orchestral arrangement and after a slow introduction, the music drifts into a compelling Latin-American rhythm with the catchy and memorable melody shared between various sections of the orchestra. The performance was recorded in the Prince Mahidol Hall at Mahidol University’s College of Music and given a lively performance by what must surely be the best symphony orchestra in the country.
Music Background “Playlist the Concert” SPIMxISB Season of love – Jonathan Larson arranged by Jay Bocook "Seasons of Love" is the signature song from the 1996 Broadway musical Rent, written and composed by Jonathan Larson. The musical was performed on Broadway for twelve years and 5,123 performances, making it one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. It also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical. This show has had numerous national and international tours and has been performed in 15 languages. It was adapted into a Hollywood motion picture in 2005. In today's performance, vocalists will be featured singing this anthem of hope and friendship, affirming that one should measure life in love: Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes Five hundred, twenty five thousand moments so dear Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes How do you measure, measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife In five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes How do you measure a year in a life? How about love? How about love? How about love? Measure in love Seasons of love Seasons of love Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes Five hundred, twenty five thousand journeys to plan Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes How can you measure the life of a woman or a man? How about love? How about love? How about love? Measure in love Seasons of love Seasons of love
