Theology on Tap
On Saturday September 21st at 5:30pm in the smaller hall of the Slovenian Catholic Center, Fr. Strehovec will
speak as part of the Theology on Tap series run by the Slovenian Catholic Center. The Slovenian Catholic Center
is located at 14245 Main St. Lemont, IL 60539. This is open to the public. There will be a question and answer
session following his remarks.
Fr. Tadej Strehovec, OFM completed his undergraduate and graduate studies within the School of Theology at the
University of Ljubljana where he was awarded a doctorate in 2005. He then did post doctoral work in Applied
Ethics at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium where he was awarded another masters degree. In 2007,
the Slovenian Bishops Conference appointed him to the Commission on Justice and Peace. He is a member of the
bioethical organization of the COMECE (the Bishops Conference of the European Member states) since 2010 as
well as the Evaluators and Experts for Ethics at the European Commission since 2006. He is an assistant in the
Department of Canon Law and Moral Theology in the School of Theology, University of Ljubljana. In 2013, the
Slovenian Bishops Conference appointed him as the General Secretary of the Bishops Conference. He writes
broadly on bio-ethical issues. He directs a website portal which has developed the reputation of being the "anti-
abortion lobby". Last year he was charged with writing hateful and intolerant articles. He was found to be not guilty
by the Slovenian courts because no proof was presented that he was indeed the author of the specific articles
which were the subject of the suite. Fr. Strehovec will speak on "Freedom of Speech and Religious Freedom in
Times of Political Correctness.". This will focus on his recent experiences with the Slovenian Judicial System.

September 22nd is the 25th celebration of the creation of the Slovenian Catholic Mission at the 11:00 AM
mass. Archbishop Zore of Ljubljana will be officiating.
October 25th KSKJ Branch 1 St. Stephen is celebrating its 125th anniversary at the SCC. The celebration be-
gins with mass at 11 AM.
In lieu of Baraga Days this year, the Bishop Baraga Association has decided to have a celebratory mass at St.
Peter's Cathedral in Marquette, MI to recognize the submission of the necessary documentation of a miracle to
the Vatican, which we hope will bring the Venerable Frederick Baraga to the Blessed stage in canonization.
Retreat House News: We have over half of the $30,000 needed to install an elevator/lift. We are starting the
contracting process in the hope of having this installed by fall of this year. This is a critical part of our renova-
tion in order to make us ADA compliant.
Consular’s Corner
The new Slovenian General Consul for the Midwest has not been officially confirmed in the new position so we
don’t have their information to make an announcement at this time. We extend our sincere thanks to Andrej Rode
and his family for their service to us and we wish them all well as they return to Slovenia.

Toronto trip update! What a great success! Thank you to everyone who
supported the group over the past few months to make it happen, to the SCC
board who helped us realize our financial goals, to the parents, grandparents
and guests who joined us on our trip, to our hosts Mladi Glas Planika, who
went out of their way to make us feel welcome and part of the family! It was
amazing to watch so many first, second and third generation Slovenians
perform traditional dances and continue to fortify our culture. With over 125
dancers, it was an amazing evening and our own Marela members did not
disappoint. They were excellent!!! Thank you all again. Planning for our next
trip is under way!
Please join us on Sunday, July 28th as our
group will host a "Backyard Barbecue" fund
raiser behind the SCC! We’ll have hot dogs,
hamburgers and all the trimmings! Please
join us and help us replenish our funds!
August 4th we will perform at Triglav Park in
Wind Lake, Wisconsin for their Sportni
Picnic! Asambel Veseljaki, dads of some of
our members, will be the musical
entertainment that day.
Please contact Nada Petrovic for more
information.
August 11th we will entertain the friends and family of our SCC at the Annual Picnic! Please stop by the
pavilion to see what we have been up to!
Look forward to seeing you over the summer!

SLOMŠEK SLOVENIAN SCHOOL UPDATES
As the 2018/2019school year came to a close, students participated in preparations for the Center's Palm Sunday lunch-
eon by helping to color “pirhi” on Saturday, April 13th. Many thanks to Mojca Anaya, for helping our young chickens cre-
ate such beautiful eggs. After enjoying spring break, students returned to classes on Saturday, April 27th to continue
polishing up their Mother's Day performances.
Mother's Day always marks the official end of the school year.. Students and parents participate in the Mother's Day
mass before heading to the Center for the luncheon and program. Our “novice” program this year took on the look and
feel of a nightly newscast. With a mix of pre-recorded videos as well as live performances, our student broadcasters
emceed the entire program.
Our youngest performers, Srčki, showed off what they’ve learned over the year with their performance of “Naše Črke.”
Zvončki’s recitation of Ugiba nje hrane was followed by our Slomšek Zbor’s medley of many well-known songs. Our
adult class contribution to the show was a recitation of “Kam,” by Franc Prešeren, followed by Čebelice’s Angel
Gospodov.
Our 8th graders this year, Hope Ondracek and Sophie Martincic, were recognized for their accomplishments both in and
outside of šola. We are proud of these two bright young ladies and wish them continued success as they move on to
their next challenge: high school!
The program wrapped up with all students dancing to Mladi Korenjaki Polka.

SLOMŠEK SLOVENIAN SCHOOL UPDATES…
On top of teaching the students and preparing them for the performance, it takes an army of volunteers and a great
number of tasks to make an event like Mother's Day possible. Our volunteer army this year consisted of approximately
48 people (not including all of you who donated baked goods.)
Our school has been blessed to have such a supportive community. A very heart-felt appreciation goes out to all of you
who assisted by: Reading/serving/singing at mass, assisting with program rehearsals/emceeing, preparing publicity/
program booklets, organizing reservations and seating, baking and arranging of pecivo/sladice, assisting with décor and
table set-up/dressing, ordering/purchasing of food and supplies, slicing of appetizers, seasoning/grilling/roasting
chickens/117 lbs of prime rib, meat plating, soup/salad/vegetable preparation, grill/rotisserie set-up and cleaning, table
service, buffet service, dish/pots-n-pan washing, buffet escorting, bar service, event tear-down and clean-up.
Your love, dedication and willingness to share your time and effort nurtures the future of our Center. A special thank you
to Marko Magajne for bringing together a dedicated kitchen crew to ensure Ljuba Novak, who shares her culinary talents
with our community throughout the year, was not stuck in the kitchen all day. Najlepša hvala vsem!
The Slomšek Slovenian School teachers dedicate themselves throughout the year to preserving our culture and passing
it on. It is the perseverance and selflessness of the following people, that enables our šola to continue:
Srčki Class - Millie Hozjan, Asst. Kristina Cepon
Čebelice – Kristina Ondracek, Youth Asst. Janez Lockwood
Zvončki- Mojca Anaya, Youth Asst. Anton Lockwood
Zmaj – Martin Puc, Youth Asst. Adam Petrovič
Odrasli – Andrej Remec, John Vidmar
Singing - Nandi Puc
Folklore Dancing – Sheena Litt, Asst. Stephanie Williams
Special Projects - Mojca Anaya
Teacher Alternates – Susan Rus
Publications – Reza Rozman
The 2019-2020 School year will start in October. Until then, we hope to see you at the summer picnics. Please follow
us on Facebook at Slomšek Slovenian School and uživajte poletje!
