AboutHillel
The largest Jewish campus organization
i n the world, Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life
provides opportunities for Jewish students at more than 550 colleges and
universities to explore and celebrate their Jewish identity through its global
network of Hillels on campuses and communities around the world.
Hillel’s mission is to enrich the lives of Jewish students so that
they may enrich the Jewish people and the world.
Hillel’s vision is of a world where every student is inspired to make
an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning and Israel.
Hillel student leaders, professionals and
lay leaders are dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive
environment for Jewish college students of all backgrounds, where they
are encouraged to grow intellectually, spiritually and socially. Hillel teaches
students relationship-building skills in a Jewish context and sets the
framework for delivering the Jewish future. Our experience over the past
90 years has resulted in a personal, professional and global impact on the
future of Jewish peoplehood. Hillel professionals on campus encourage
students to pursue tzedek (social justice), tikkun olam (repairing the world)
Jewish learning, and to support Israel and global Jewish peoplehood. Hillel
is committed to excellence, innovation, accountability and results.

Dear Friends of Hillel,
This year has certainly been the most challenging for our
Hillel at the College of Staten Island. Here we are, having
our annual Kavod Circle event in September on-line
rather than this past May at the President’s residence
as was initially planned. Thank you for joining us this
evening and for being a part of our success.
Continuing to maintain services for a commuter college
with no commuters required an immense amount
of creativity. When many of our students could have
benefitted from in-person services during these trying
times, we were reduced to providing on-line support.
This took the form of virtual activities - such as Israeli
cooking classes and game nights, on-line Jewish learning
fellowships, a social work intern meeting with struggling
students one on one over the phone, and organizing
small grants from the Hebrew Free Loan Society made to
students experiencing financial difficulty. It’s times like these that we really need each other and
must come together in community, and Hillel at CSI is there for our Staten Island students. That
is why your generous support is so important.
I want to thank Amy, Shifra and the student leadership of Hillel for their efforts in keeping the
students involved through the shutdown.
Though we were able to hold two terrific book events last fall and one with Wagner College for
International Holocaust Remembrance Day in January, It’s hard to believe that our Chanukah
party featuring Jodi, Alan, Bryn and me doing a version of “Old Jews Telling Jokes” may
actually have been the highlight of the year! I want to thank Robin and Rabbi Michael Howald
for inviting us to use their home and enjoy the amazing view of the harbor and lights of the city
for this fun fund raising event. We will be planning an on-line Chanukah event for this year, and
we hope to see virtually everyone there.
The members of the Hillel board must also be recognized for the moral and financial support
during the year and especially for rallying to the cause of continuing to keep Hillel at CSI
functioning despite the efforts of some persons to “fix something that isn’t broken.” All of you
who spoke out in support of Hillel on Staten Island are also greatly appreciated. We know that
Staten Island is unique and special and we are proud of the work we do – and we couldn’t do it
without the community behind us.
Finally, I have to recognize the support we receive from President William Fritz and Bonnie
Fritz, Cheryl Adolph and Jennifer Lynch, VP Jennifer Borrero, Carol Brower and the entire CSI
family in helping us to serve the entire CSI community. We are glad to be valued campus partners
in making CSI truly a world-class college. Perhaps the only positive note for being online tonight
is that the Fritz’s don’t have to rearrange all of their furniture this year to accommodate the
Kavod event at their home!
That being said, I am happy to welcome you to our first-ever virtual Kavod Circle reception!
Wishing you all a very happy, HEALTHY, good New Year.
-Hon. Philip Straniere
President, Hillel at CSI, Inc.
Dear Friends:
I would like to thank you, on behalf of the entire College community, for your support of Hillel at the College of
Staten Island’s virtual Kavod Circle event. Even though the difficult circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic
are preventing us from physically gathering as we have in the past, your generosity allows Hillel at CSI to
continue its proud legacy of making a positive difference in our community and our world.
In that spirit, I would like to congratulate tonight’s honorees: Arlene Sorkin and Ed Finkelstein, and CSI senior
Anthony Rubin, who is receiving the Fran and Joe Harris Student Leadership Award. Thank you for everything
that you do to make this Borough a better place.
As you know, 2020 has been full of challenges. We spent a majority of the Spring semester successfully
implementing remote learning to ensure that our students continue to receive the exceptional instruction
that CSI provides. As we have just recently begun the Fall semester, classes continue remotely, for the most
part, but the College has received approval from The City University of New York and New York State to
move forward with our phased Campus Re-Entry Plan. Although this does not mean that our facilities will be
welcoming students, faculty, and staff back immediately, it provides a roadmap for us to begin moving forward
with reopening while ensuring the health and safety of our College community.
Each year, I am pleased to share news of the College of Staten Island’s continued recognition for value and
academic excellence, and this year is no different, as CSI’s long list of accolades and awards has grown. Some
of these honors include:
- Victory Media named CSI the Number 2 in the Nation Military Friendly® School for 2019, and we also made
their 2019 Military Spouse Friendly Schools® List;
- CSI was listed as a Forbes” Best Value College 2019;
- MONEY Magazine named CSI to its 2019 Best Colleges in America, Ranked by Value List;
- The security company ASecureLife listed CSI as One of the “100 Most Secure College Campuses in America”;
and
- GradReports Best Colleges List ranked CSI’s Bachelor’s and Master’s in Social Work programs each as 20th in
the nation. GradReports has also named CSI’s Undergraduate Nursing program to its Top 25 Undergraduate
Nursing Schools 2020 list.
Our faculty members have also received prestigious grants and awards:
• Dr. Kristen Gillespie-Lynch in Psychology received funding from National Science Foundation (NSF) for her
project, “Promoting Engagement in Informal STEM Learning as a Path to Employment for Adolescents with
Autism Spectrum Disorder.” The award amount was $945,539 over three years.
• Also in Psychology, Dr. Sarah Berger (and her co-PI Regina Harbourne) were funded by NSF for their project,
“The Role of Sleep in Infant Motor Problem Solving.” The award amount was $485,916 over three years.
• Dr. Maria Knikou from Physical Therapy received a National Institutes of Health RO1 grant to support her
research project, “Priming with High-Frequency Trans-spinal Stimulation to Augment Locomotor Training
Benefits in Spinal Cord Injury.” The amount in the first year (of five years) is $597,511.
• And, in Media Culture, Associate Professor Racquel Gates is the recipient of one of this year’s Academic
of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Academy Film Scholar awards for her
book in progress, Hollywood Style and the Invention of Blackness.
Hillel at the College of Staten Island continues to be a critical component of
the College’s progress and goal to provide its students with the Opportunity
to Ascend. I would like to thank you, once again, for your continued support
for this wonderful organization that strives to create a better world.
Best regards,
William J. Fritz

KAVOD CIRCLE HONOREE
ANTHONY RUBIN
Hi everyone. My name is Anthony Rubin, and I
am proud and honored to be receiving the Joe
and Fran Harris Hillel Student Leadership Award
for my involvement in the Hillel Club. Let me tell
you a little bit about myself: I am a double major
in Dramatic Arts and English with a concentration
in Linguistics and a minor in Speech Language
Pathology. I am a senior at the College of Staten
Island and am looking forward to graduating in
the Spring of 2021 with a double bachelor degree.
After I graduate from the College of Staten Island,
my intended plan is to head to graduate school to
obtain a Masters’ degree in Speech and Language
Pathology. I hope to go into the medical field.
Now onto how I found out about the Hillel Club.
During the Fall of 2016, as a Wagner high school
senior I came upon a flyer for a shabbat dinner being
held by Hillel. I went to the dinner, and from then
on I started attending every Hillel event I possibly could. I have had many amazing opportunities
along the way with the help of Executive Director Amy Posner and our Shifra Caruso, who was
our Program Director. In the year of 2018-2019, I was elected Secretary of Hillel, along with being
a PNEI (Peer Networking Engagement Intern), a Ruderman Inclusion Ambassador, (working to
include student with special needs) as well as a CSI Emerging Leader. In 2019-2020, I was elected
Hillel Vice President and served as Ruderman Ambassador for a second year. Now, entering my
last year, 2020-2021, I am now the President of the Hillel Club. Ever since joining Hillel I have
had many amazing opportunities that came my way. I was sent to Hillel leadership trainings and
conferences which were awesome. I even got to meet Marly Maitlin at the Ruderman Inclusion
conference in Boston! I learned a lot at Hillel Shabbatons and by being a part of the Hillel Jewish
Learning Fellowship. And, I helped to start a Russian Jewish Culture Club and organized a Russian
Festival on campus. I am honored to have just recently been chosen by Hillel International to
participate in a student focus group for how to be more inclusive of students with disabilities in
this time of COVID-19. I am proud to excel at many things in order to get the job done - including
my studies. Everyday after my classes, I would head straight to the Campus Center and go upstairs
to the Multifaith center to hang, do homework, and talk about Hillel and club events. Oh, there is
something very important that I forgot to mention! During the month of January 2019, I got to
partake in Birthright Israel. Being in Israel was amazing, and it was a trip I will never forget. I had
a great time, all thanks to Amy and Shifra, and Hillel at CSI. Ever since stepping foot into Hillel my
college career could never have been better. Along with all of the amazing opportunities I have
made good friends and have a real home on campus. I am proud of all that I have received and
achieved- not only of myself, but for everyone in Hillel. I want to let everyone know that you can
achieve anything and everything if you put your mind to it and join a magnificent club, like Hillel.
Because of Hillel, my life, has changed completely. Thank you for this award.

HILLEL AT CSI BRINGS WORLD CLASS AUTHORS IN 2019-2020!
Julie Satow SEPTEMBER 22
“The Plaza” The account of one vaunted New York City address that has
become synonymous with wealth and scandal, opportunity and tragedy.
From the moment in 1907 when New York millionaire Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt
strode through the Plaza Hotel’s revolving doors to become its first guest, to
the afternoon in 2007 when a mysterious Russian oligarch paid a record price
for the hotel’s largest penthouse, the eighteen-story white marble edifice at the corner of Fifth Avenue and
59th Street has radiated wealth and luxury.
For some, the hotel evokes images of F. Scott Fitzgerald frolicking in the Pulitzer Fountain, or Eloise, the
impish young guest who pours water down the mail chute. But the true stories captured in THE PLAZA also
include dark, hidden secrets.
In this definitive history, award-winning New York Times journalist Julie Satow not only pulls back the
curtain on Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball and The Beatles’ first stateside visit -- she also follows
the money trail.
Sally Koslow NOVEMBER 3
“Another Side of Paradise” In 1937 Hollywood, gossip columnist Sheilah
Graham’s star is on the rise, while literary wonder boy F. Scott Fitzgerald’s
career is slowly drowning in booze. But the once-famous author, desperate
to make money penning scripts for the silver screen, is charismatic enough to
attract the gorgeous Miss Graham, a woman who exposes the secrets of others
while carefully guarding her own. Like Fitzgerald’s hero Jay Gatsby, Graham
has meticulously constructed a life far removed from the poverty of her childhood in London’s slums.
And like Gatsby, the onetime guttersnipe learned early how to use her charms to become a hardworking
success; she is feted and feared by both the movie studios and their luminaries.
A notorious drunk famously married to the doomed Zelda, Fitzgerald fell hard for his “Shielah” (he never
learned to spell her name), a shrewd yet softhearted woman—both a fool for love and nobody’s fool—
who would stay with him and help revive his career until his tragic death three years later. Working from
Sheilah’s memoirs, interviews, and letters, Sally Koslow revisits their scandalous love affair and Graham’s
dramatic transformation in London, bringing Graham and Fitzgerald gloriously to life with the color, glitter,
magic, and passion of 1930s Hollywood.
Rebecca Erbelding, JANUARY 30
“Rescue Board” The untold story of America’s efforts to save the Jews
winner of the 2018 Herbert Katzki national Jewish book award for writing based
on archival material
Until January 1944, the United States had no policy regarding the mass murder of
Jews we now call the Holocaust. On January 16, 1944, Secretary of the Treasury Henry
Morgenthau, Jr. and several members of his staff pleaded with President Franklin Roosevelt, convincing
him to create the WRB and establish a policy of relief and rescue. The WRB staff, almost all young Treasury
Department lawyers, opened a refugee camp in upstate New York, started a psychological warfare campaign,
sent false papers into enemy territory, negotiated ransom offers with Nazis, and ultimately saved tens of
thousands of lives. Rebecca Erbelding is a historian, archivist, and curator at the United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum.
