I write this article on the afternoon of the Head of the Lake in the quiet space of my office.
For those of you that were at the Lake this morning, I am sure you will agree with me that it
has been an absolutely perfect day to hold the 101st Head of the Lake. It was very exciting
that we won 6 races and the Girls Premiership but also I want to congratulate all of our
Rowers who gave their very best in such a tough event.
Congratulations must go to our Rowing Director Ross Henderson and his coaches, some of
whom are staff at School. A special mention must also go to our fitness staff, led by Cass
Hobbs who worked very hard with our students. Can I personally also thank all of the staff
who were in attendance on the Spit. We had well over 20 staff who gave up their Sunday
morning to be with us all. Furthermore it has been an exciting week at School with all the
Spit Crew chants and action on campus and a fitting Rowing Assembly on Friday.
I personally wish to thank Ashton Wood and Georgia Willersdorf for their efforts in the lead up
to and on Boat Race day. Many staff have said to me that the Spit Crew were the best they
had seen in many years.
This week, the Senior School moves to another significant event in our annual calendar, the
House Performing Arts competition, which will take place on Friday, 8 March in the Gym at
1pm. All students have been working hard for the last 2½ weeks and this will no doubt be
intensified this week in the final rehearsals. I wish all students and staff well and encourage
all parents and friends to come along on Friday if possible.
After the long weekend, we hold the Senior School play, Don Quick, in the Senior School
Lecture Theatre on March 14 and 15 March. This is another of former teacher Chris Dickins’
scripts and is the first performance by a school group.
Finally, I hope to see as many of you as possible at the Senior School Parents Welcome
function in the new Multi-Purpose Pavilion on Friday 15 March at 6pm.

As I write, the KI students are preparing for their Northern Journey, the second, and longer,
of their two major hikes. They have had a couple of weeks to refresh themselves from the
Southern Challenge and reflect on how they went, before embarking on this latest
adventure.
Back at Sturt St, the MS students continue to be involved with a wide range of activities,
which reflect the breadth of our community. Last week some of our students raced in the
Primary School MDASA 50m swimming carnival held at Eureka pool. All students in the
event worked hard to support their teammates and showed terrific sportsmanship and spirit.
It was wonderful to see so many Year 9 students taking part in the Head of the Lake boat
races last weekend. The talent, effort and passion on display was remarkable; students had
worked incredibly hard on technique and fitness over the last 30 weeks leading to this
event. They were very proud of themselves and their efforts irrespective of where their
crew finished in the race. Rowing is a worthwhile endeavor and is one of the many places at
College where students can learn.
This week, the students who have been selected for House and Middle School Leaders have
been formally recognised at the Middle School Leadership Assembly. We believe that
leadership at College is what people do rather than what badges they have been awarded,
and so anyone in our community can show leadership at various times. The students
presented this week have consistently shown a willingness to do the right thing for the right
reason, irrespective of whether they are being watched by a teacher.
Book list clarification
There has been some confusion about the books required for Year 5 English students due to
the formatting on the book list. Please note that Year 5 students are required to have a
copy of the Oxford Australian Schoolmate file dictionary, as well as a Readers Notebook.
Please contact the Middle School Office if you have any questions.

Rowing
Our rowing program depends on a lot of good will from many people and I would like to
thank those people who have helped with the operations of the program this season:
· One of our talented year 12 students, Drew Collins has put together this year’s rowing
video. Drew is studying media as a part of his year 12 course and the expertise he brought
to the production of this video was exceptional.
· The 1920 Club for their efforts in fundraising, assistance at regattas and social events
such as the annual rowing dinner. President Greg Watt and his team have only the best
interest of the students at heart and as a School we are incredibly fortunate to have such
passionate people volunteering their time to provide extra assistance to the program.
· David Baird and Cass Ewan – our Captains of Boats this season. One of the really
enjoyable elements of being a teacher is being able to sit back and watch young teenagers
develop into young adults. I have watched both of these students do just this over the past
six years. They have both developed into wonderful people who are compassionate and
caring about their peers and they both have a very clear understanding of the difference
between right and wrong. Over the years I have seen them learn that they you can
overcome obstacles without help and that effort really is needed in order to reach great
heights. Throughout this season they have provided me with wonderful support and been
exceptional role models for the other members of the program.
· Our dedicated and passionate group of volunteer coaches. Throughout this season we
have had up to 40 coaches working with our students at various times. I think this reflects
the incredibly strong sense of community that exists within our School. Most of our coaches
are old collegians who understand the balance needed between all the elements of a young
person’s life. They realise that rowing is only one of these elements and always bring this
perspective to the program. Without these people our program could not operate and for the
opportunity to grow and learn that they provide our students we are forever grateful.
· This year saw a restructure of the rowing program with Miss Cass Hobbs coming on
board as the conditioning coordinator. Cass is an Old Collegian who was the Captain of Boats
in 2005 and is a great case study for our young rowers. Cass is a very talented
sportswoman: Vic Country basketballer, fantastic netballer and an exceptional footballer.
However, it’s fair to say that Cass didn’t find rowing as easy to master as these other sports.
She had her first taste of rowing in the year 10 div. 3 crew.. The Open div. 3 crew in her
second year was a concern as I was worried she might fall in – every stroke. However in
true Hobbs fashion she persisted. She fell down and got up again, and again, and again. In
her final year of school the awkward 15 year old had grown into the stroke of the first crew
that not only won the Head of the Lake but also the National title. Our students have
benefitted from her sessions enormously and I would like to thank Cass for her support and
all her efforts this season.
· Thank you to the parents whose efforts often go overlooked during the rowing season.
Thank you for the early wake-ups, the long days, the tired – no doubt grumpy children, the
aches and the pains and of course the extra meals.
· Finally to all of the rowers. This season saw record numbers of students rowing, with
over 170 participants in term 4. What continues to amaze me with our students is the fact
that not only do they commit to the many hours involved with being in the rowing program,
many also have part time jobs, play music, are involved in the school play and of course all
are working extremely hard at their academic pursuits. Whilst this season may have been
slightly easier than some recent seasons in terms of not having to travel as far and wide to
access water, the addition of Cass Hobbs overseeing the off-water program certainly
ensured that the physical demands of the program remained extremely high. Our students
proved their resilience time and time again.
They have learned to climb and if they couldn’t do it on their own, they have learnt that they
will survive the disappointment.
They have learnt that they are not entitled to the reward without having to push through
whatever it is that's holding them back and “earn” it.
They have learnt that they that they can overcome obstacles without help.
They have learnt that they can’t reach great heights without effort.
And, they have learnt the exhilaration of overcoming fear and doubt and achieving a hardwon
success; whether that be coming first in a race, achieving their goals on the ergo or for
some even just finishing an ergo.

Among the year 12 involved with the program this year, several students have contributed
four years’ service to the rowing program having competed in the past four Head of the Lake
regattas. The following students were presented with the Service Award at the rowing
dinner.
Cass Ewan, Marie Foley, Meg Grover, Alex Nash, Kate Scott and Natasha Wrigglesworth
Wally Dawson Cup
In 1986 a cup was struck in honour of the late Wally Dawson who coached the 1920 crew.
The trophy is awarded for outstanding service to the rowing program and is awarded to a
person or a group of people who have demonstrated dedication to and passion for the sport
along with the virtuous qualities that sport can promote. This year whilst the award was to
be shared the Cup itself was still only going to the one household. The 2013 recipients of the
Wally Dawson cup were Emma Littlejohn and Cate Littlejohn.
Ken Baird Memorial Award
In 2011 the school lost one of its greatest servants. Throughout his time on School Council
Ken Baird was a tremendous sounding board and an inspiration to so many people. His
guiding presence and his foresight were well recognised within the Ballarat College and
greater Ballarat communities.
In honour of Ken, his daughter Jillian and son Andrew wished for an award to be presented
at the end of every season and an honour board will be mounted in the boatshed listing all
recipients of this award. This award will be presented annually to the student who displays
their utmost effort in all endeavours throughout the entire rowing season as judged by their
coaches and peers.
The 2013 recipient of the Ken Baird Memorial Award is James Simpson.

Sport
This week begins a busy month for the school in terms of sport. On Sunday March 3 the
school will be involved in the Rowing Head of the Lake competition on Lake Wendouree. The
competition will begin at 9am and I am sure the racing will be intense. Our students have
worked incredibly hard and no matter the outcome I know that they will give their best.
Best of luck goes to Ross Henderson the Head of Rowing, his coaching team and the various
crews. The school is definitely behind you all the way. Go College.
Immediately after the rowing we have the BAS swimming championships on Wednesday
March 6 at the Eureka Pool. Our swimming coaches and Gold Swimming are very upbeat
about our chances and I am sure there will be an improved showing from the team this
year.
The week after beginning Monday March 18th the annual BAS Tennis championships for the
Henderson Shield / McNeil Cup will be held at Ballarat tennis centre. The preliminary rounds
will occur on Monday March 18 and the finals will be played on Thursday March 21.
In the last week of term the BAS v ACS Summer Carnival will be held in Melbourne on March
25. Nominations for these sports will occur in the next few weeks. A healthy College
representation is likely to be present in all sports.
Swimming success
The following is the information re the Victorian State Age Sprint Swimming championships
that were held on the weekend of 16 and 17 February. To compete at these championships
which are 50 metre events in all 4 strokes, you need to achieve qualifying times for one or
more of the strokes.
The students from BCC who competed at these championships were:
Shogo Trevena
Takumi Trevena
Joel Walton
Chloe Walton
Matthew Jenkins
Jason Luong
Winona Hoffman
Andrew McDougall
Of these competitors the following students made the finals :
Shogo Trevena qualified for the 11 and under 50 m freestyle final and finished 10th in the
State. His time broke a Ballarat district record for 10 year old boys. Currently Shogo and
Takumi are ranked number 1 and 2 10 year old boys in the state for freestyle.
Chloe Walton qualified for the 12 year old 50 m freestyle final and finished 4th in the State.
Her time broke a Ballarat district record set in 1992 by our very own Jenny Bourke, a
current teacher at BCC.
Winona Hoffman qualified for the 15 year old 50m backstroke final and finished 4th in the
State. Her time has qualified her to compete at the Australian Open Age swimming
championships in April where she will compete against Australia’s best swimmers including
current Olympians.

Gold Swimming Notice
The 2013 Ballarat Gold encouragement swim meet will be held at the Eureka pool on Sunday
March 3rd. The idea of an ‘encouragement meet” is to let swimmers who do not usually
compete in actual swimming races to come and experience the atmosphere and excitement
of competing in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Ballarat Gold’s performance Coach, Mark
Stahl will be on hand to give tips to the swimmers during the event. Ballarat Gold Swimmers
will be assisting the events competitors showing them the process of a swim meet plus
putting on swimming displays.
The City Of Ballarat in conjunction with Swimming Victoria and Ballarat YMCA are proud to
support this exciting swimming event as it is aimed to raise the profile of swimming within
Ballarat and the surrounding area. Several Councillors such as Cr Des Hudson will be in
attendance to discuss the City’s current aquatic infrastructure. The City of Ballarat has asked
permission to send 3 or 4 people from the Council along to take a survey on the future of
aquatics in Ballarat which demonstrates a great opportunity to get your voice out to the
Council in regards to the future of Ballarat aquatics.
Olympic swimmer Belinda Hocking has made herself available taking time out of her busy
Page 8
training schedule to attend the encouragement meet to talk with children and their families
about what it takes to achieve the ultimate and swim at the Olympics.
All participants will receive a Swimming Victoria pack with items such as goggles and a
swimming cap.

*Preparation: We had undoubtedly seen a blow to our confidence having experienced two
heavy defeats against BGS and SPC in 20/ 20 encounters in recent times. Therefore, the
decision was made to modify the approach to training in the week leading up to the clashes
against BHS (20/ 20 game) and SPC (two-day game). The 1st XI squad would engage in
centre-wicket practice and the 2nd XI squad would remain in the nets. Rarely has the Senior
Cricket Squad been broken up during training sessions, but desperate times called for
desperate measures. While centre-wicket practice does have its weaknesses (such as not all
players being heavily involved all the time), it is the best match simulation one can get.
Most batsmen had at least one 20-minute innings, with some receiving two. Bowlers had at
least one 20-minute spell, if not two spells. All players approached the centre-wicket
sessions with the appropriate degree of focus and dedication.
*The Games- The Positives:
-There were many pleasing signs with the batting against BHS and against SPC in the twoday
game. In both contests, McSweyn contributed enormously, but he had support around
him. Partnerships with Chapman in both games, and with Grose in the two-dayer, were
essential. At this level, a major contribution is only needed from one player, as long as there
is valuable support from others.
-In both of the above games, BCC batted out its allotted overs. This was particularly
pleasing on the Saturday as it has been some time since College played an extended game.
-The batting on Saturday suited the occasion. It was an extended game and the appropriate
level of patience was displayed.
-Having fallen away some weeks ago, the fielding was generally better this week. Many good
catches were taken across the Friday and the Saturday, and the ground fielding was solid.
-Under real pressure on both days, the bowling was also sound. Five of the BHS wickets
were bowled (these delivering were also on a length or just short of a length). Polished
fielding was of great support to the industrious bowlers, who did not throw in the towel,
against SPC.
*Areas requiring improvement:
-In both games, there were potentially disastrous batting collapses. Against BHS, BCC lost 4
for 1 towards the end of the innings. In any game, this has a serious impact. The
momentum swings to the opposition; the innings is halted; self-doubt creeps in. On the
Saturday, another collapse (4 for 39) occurred. This also threatened to derail BCC. The
batting team must rally to prevent consecutive wickets from falling.
-At the start of the opposition’s innings in both games, the opposition went on the offensive,
looking to hit the BCC bowlers hard and long. In such a situation, cool minds must prevail.
The bowlers should consider modifying their line and length, perhaps even coming around
the wicket to the batsmen. In addition, the tempo of the game could be disrupted by slowing
proceedings up in the field slightly.
-Stay cool when the pressure is on. Against BHS, the game was in our favour, despite BHS
Page 9
making a charge towards the end. On too many occasions, there were unnecessary throws
at the stumps leading to over-throws. In such a situation, it is better to sacrifice the single
run and just hold onto the ball. This is a conservative and defensive approach, but an
effective one due to the low risk-factor.
*The future: We are now on the home stretch. We have re-invented the team in the last few
weeks, changing a few things and bringing in some new faces. The two-day game against
SPC is evenly poised. We must look at drying up the runs and building pressure in the first
hour or so next Saturday. The Friday night 20/ 20 clash against BGS is a really important
game for our pride. We have been overpowered by BGS on each occasion we have played
them this season. The keys will be having all of our players meaningfully contribute and also
nullifying their top-liners. The season will conclude after the exeat weekend with a 60-over
game against BGS at BGS on Saturday March 16 starting at 10.00am.
Games remaining in Term I 2013:
20/ 20 games
Friday 1 March BCC vs. BGS
Friday 8 March Exeat weekend- no cricket scheduled
One -day/ two-day games
2 March BCC vs. SPC (Day Two of two-day game)
16 March BGS vs. BCC (game will begin at 10am in order to accommodate 60 overs-a-side)

50M report
On Sunday February 24, the Ballarat Clarendon College “Super Swim Team” competed in the
MDASA Eureka 50M Swimming Carnival, and what a successful day it was. Not only did BCC
achieve some fantastic individual achievements, but there were many wonderful team
results also. The sun was scorching hot, but that didn’t stop the children in red caps from
blazing down the pool.
The MCCAINS SHIELD has been yet again brought back to BCC thanks to superstars Takumi
Trevena, Shogo Trevena, Ben Fritch & Sophie Grylewicz. What an exciting race it was!
Shogo swam the final leg and managed to mow down St Francis Xavier starting from a good
5-6m behind.

king island
As I sit in the office and write I can hear the excited voices of our students outside my
window as they come in search of packages and letters. There are squeals of delight as they
find their names on the board and plans being made for walks down to the local store to
post letters they have written to friends and families.
It is a unique experience for many young people to actively engage in the almost forgotten
art of letter writing. As a child I had a pen pal in the USA and I used to look forward to
receiving her handwritten letters, to the paper that had come from another country, the
stamps from so far way and the ink on the paper that she written with her own hands. In a
time of texts, email, and social networking this excitement sometimes seems very old
fashioned, but there really is nothing quite like delving back into a box of old letters and rereading
the past. Treasure the letters your children are sending as I know they are
treasuring the ones they are receiving. In the distant future they will bring a whole new level
of joy all over again.
Letters written at the moment will tell tales of hiking adventures around the Southern end of
the island through bogs, up hills, across beaches and paddocks and all in the blazing King
Island sun. They will tell stories of cooking meals in houses, mostly delicious but occasionally
disastrous. They will share of feelings of anticipation, excitement and anxiety as
students prepare for the upcoming solos and surfing days, and they will share stories of
personal achievements, individual highlights and private thoughts and moments that they
will only want to share with family.
My letter would tell you all just how proud I am of this group of students and of how they
are embracing this program and making the most of every opportunity presented to them.
In the coming weeks we have solos, surfing, adventure races, the King Island Show, the
Imperial 20, the eight day Northern Journey and before we know it the parents weekend.
What a joy it will be to share this weekend with you all.
And now, a van has pulled up filled with a week’s worth of food, so it is time to join the
students in the task of unpacking.

Allergy Awareness
Students who are seriously allergic to certain products can even be susceptible when in close
proximity to that particular product. Increasing numbers of students in the school
experience anaphylactic (life-threatening) reactions to egg, dairy, shellfish and especially to
nuts. The main concerns are the nut-based products such as peanut butter, Nutella and
muesli bars containing nuts. In line with the Anaphylaxis Policy please be mindful of this and
do not send nut products to school, and reinforce the importance of students eating their
own food and not sharing.
Thank you in anticipation of your cooperation.

Health Notice – Gastroenteritis
Over the past two weeks there have been a number of students who have experienced
various degrees of nausea. In the last two days a number of students have exhibited all the
