Kindergarten News
This quarter kindergarten will be celebrating the 100th Day of School! The children will be participating in
100th day center rotations and activities. In social studies we are learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In February our focus will be on President’s day. We will read about the life of George Washington,
Abraham Lincoln and significant U.S. monuments. In math we will be learning how to compose and
decompose numbers to 5. This is an important skill that will help us understand addition and subtraction.
Kindergarten is also looking forward to celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday in March!
First Grade News
It’s going to be busy and fun in the first grade hall this term! The first graders will spend third quarter
learning all about Harriet Tubman and her adventures as the conductor of the Underground Railroad. It’s
a big concept and Harriet’s bravery is inspiring to all of us. We will also learn about Theodore Roosevelt
and his importance in history. In math we continue to work hard on place value as we explore pennies
and dimes. We will also learn to compare numbers and will work on measurement. It’s all about opinions
this quarter in writing. It is always fun to read about the opinions of first graders! We will learn about
light and shadows in science and will spend time in our new STEAM lab exploring these concepts. The
groundhog always helps to insure that this is a really fun unit! And of course we will read, read, read! First
graders are working to “prove it” as they look back into text to find answers to tricky questions!
Second Grade News
Thank you for your support of our cardboard challenge. 2nd grade students enjoyed learning about Energy,
Force, and Motion during our last quarter. We also learned about Goods & Services. We will be working
with money over the next few weeks. Please take any opportunity to practice counting coins with your
child. We will be focusing on Famous Georgians for Black History month, Jackie Robinson and Martin
Luther King.
Third Grade News
Third Grade would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! As we enter the third nine weeks, our reading
focus will be on describing characters in stories using text evidence to evaluate a character’s traits,
motivations, and feelings. Students will also work to distinguish their own point of view from point of views
of authors. We will continue to work hard with CAFÉ reading strategies and building reading stamina. In
writing workshop, students will write informational and narrative pieces with a developed topic, clear
organizational structure, descriptive details, and words or phrases to signal order. Representing and
comparing fractions will be a main focus in math. Students will also find the perimeters of polygons, tell time
to the nearest minute, and solve 2-step word problems. It is important for third graders to continue their
daily practice of basic multiplication facts! Our Economics Day this year will be Thursday, March 30th. We
will need many parent volunteers. More information will come home about this day in which students will
experience creating a budget, spending and saving!

Fourth Grade News
Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed spending time with their family and friends over the holiday
break. We will continue to work hard during the 3rd nine weeks as the concepts presented in class become
increasingly more challenging. In reading, we will discuss various reading strategies that will help them
improve their overall comprehension while reading nonfiction texts. Also, we will work on developing their
writing skills as we focus on informational research. The students will continue to work on opinion writing
while providing supporting evidence to defend their position. In math, we will continue to implement
“Number Talks” to help students share their thought processes and enhance their mental math skills. We will
also learn about Fractions over the next few weeks. In science, we will explore the Solar System during the
next several weeks as we study moon phases, planet characteristics and the stars. In social studies, we will
continue to focus on the development of the colonies and move into learning about the Revolutionary War.
Please continue to encourage your child to maintain good work/study habits, in order to help them reach
their fullest potential. As always, we appreciate your continued support!
Fifth Grade News
Happy New Year! Our fifth grade students are approaching an exciting time of year, and we are all looking
forward to a productive and fun 2017. Fifth graders, are returning to school ready to start all new academic
units. In math, students will be exploring geometry, volume and measurement. Students are continuing to
develop as independent learners, readers and writers. Students are writing across the curriculum in all subject
areas as we prepare for spring testing. We have seen our students continue to develop their reading skills
during our CAFÉ reading workshop model. Students are reading daily a variety of self-selected novels and
nonfiction texts. During social studies we will be learning about World War I, The Great Depression and World
War II. In science, students will be participating in a variety of electricity and magnetism activities.
Expectations are high for our fifth graders to buckle down and work hard this quarter because we have so
many interesting topics to learn about.
Students will be working on preparing for the fifth grade musical performance. Detailed information can be
found on Mrs. Oden’s blog, and students will be bringing letters home about our performance at the PTA
meeting on March 23rd. Students will be practicing for this performance during the third quarter. We also
hope that many students will choose to participate in the Bullard Science Fair. More information will be
coming out both on the Bullard Webpage and though your child’s class. Thank you for all you do to support
our students and our classrooms.

Music Notes
Kindergarten – If you stop by the music room this nine weeks you might hear songs about Gingerbread men, Bluebirds, Flies, Mail
Carriers and Beluga Whales. We will be working on echo singing using our head voice and performing rhythmic patterns using body
percussion and instruments. We’ll sing a folk song that Martin Luther King, Jr. might have sung as a boy and perform a student led
puppet show featuring Baby Beluga. Look for your student to bring home an original music writing that features high and low sounds sung
on an “oo” vowel.
First Grade – First graders will be focusing on performing call and response songs with accuracy and reading rhythms using
traditional and non-traditional notation. We’ll center on rhythmic reading using our CAFÉ plan with the texts “Click, Clack, Moo” and
“Beep, Beep, Vroom, Vroom”. We’ll play cow bells and write original rhythms using colored cars. Our students will perform a dance
from Germany and sing “Mail Myself to You” acting out lyrics and solo singing. Our call/response songs come from the kitchen and we’ll
play pots and pans to accompany our singing. I’d appreciate any wooden spoons you might be willing to donate to this cause!
Second Grade – There will be lots of improvising on instruments in second grade music this nine weeks as we look at the standard
that says “Students will improvise simple rhythmic patterns using a variety of sound sources”. We’ll use percussion to accompany the
book “Drummer Hoff” as well as the poem “Simple Simon”. Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” will be featured as we
analyze the sections of this music. We’ll jump all aboard the “Dino Train” and sing, play Orff instrumentation, and percussion
instruments in a two lesson performance focusing on this literary piece. Our students will compose and read simple Valentine melodies
they create in February. I’ll send this home for you to see!
Third Grade – We will take full advantage of technology this nine weeks helping us to “Identify and read letter names of lines and
spaces of melodic patterns within the treble staff”. Our students will be using the apps “Staff Wars”, “Note squish”, “Note Derby”, and
“Battleship” to help them practice and learn notes on the treble staff. However, we won’t stop there…we’ll transfer that learning to
performance on our xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, and keyboards. Our students will be singing and playing the songs “Rocky
Mountain” and “Captain Don’t Sidetrack Your Train” applying their new note reading skills to perform these pieces.
Fourth Grade – “Erie Canal” and “El Capitan” are two of the pieces we will focus on in fourth grade this nine weeks. We will be
reading and notating rhythms, improvising question and answer phrases using instrumentation, and identifying and classifying instruments
by sight and sound. I’ll be setting up centers where students can investigate, create, play, listen, and analyze instruments from the
orchestra. They’ll be using our i-pads to listen to a variety of sounds and use apps to help us identify instruments and their timbres.
Fifth Grade – We’ve been listening to our spring musical “I Need A Vacation” in music and we’ll begin to audition for speaking,
singing, acting, and dancing roles. Please look for a “blue” note coming home soon in your child’s folder with details about our
performances on 3/22, 3/23, and 4/15. During these nine weeks we will also focus on music and musicians from the Civil War to Jazz,
notating simple melodies and improvising pentatonic melodies and accompaniments. Students should bring a two pocket folder to music
each week and check my blog for updates and information about our performances. Looking forward to seeing you at our performances
in March and April.

Chorus
We have had a busy winter season and are looking forward to performing at District XII Large Group Performance Evaluation on
February 16th at 9:45 am at Burnt Hickory Baptist Church. We’ll take a field trip that day to perform before judges who will rate our
performance on a scale of 1 (superior) to 5 (poor). After our performance we will work with a clinician who can help us with any areas
that need additional work. We are working hard to memorize our pieces adding dynamics, phrasing, and expression as well as live
accompaniment. Students will wear their formal uniform (white shirt/blouse, navy pants/skirt, dark shoes, and girls – white opaque
tights) for this performance. Please contact me if you need any assistance in locating these items. Our final performance will be our
spring concert on February 28th at 6:30pm. Looking forward to sharing what we have learned this year!
All parents and students…please make sure to have my blog bookmarked or better yet subscribe to my blogs feed at
http://bllblogs.typepad.com/kim_oden/ to keep up with current performances of each grade level as well as chorus.

What is PTSA?
(Parent Teacher Student Association)
Bullard PTSA is a nonprofit organization that has dedicated itself to advancing the well-
being of our children and their families. As a PTSA member, you can share in the
education of your children and ours. Collectively we can make
an immeasurable difference!

weekly eblasts, quarterly newsletters, and Facebook posts with important
school information and dates.
o Design and create the yearbook.
o Hold teacher, bus driver, staff, and volunteer appreciation events.
o Hold community outreach drives where we collect items for various
charities throughout the year.
o Schedule and coordinate educational enrichment opportunities for
students throughout the year including BASE after school classes,

o Help maintain the grounds of the school with pine straw, mulch, flower
beds.
o Promote healthy living through Red Ribbon Week and the nutrition and
wellness committee health challenge.
