Annual Report 2017

Board of Directors A Message from
the President
Daniel Weintraub
Board Chairperson   As you began our 2017 Annual Report, you may have noticed
a new name on the cover. We are now Community Services for
Kevin Wicka Every1. We recently changed our name to eliminate the label of
Vice Chairperson “developmentally disabled” and to promote our inclusiveness
as an Agency. We look forward to continue making wonderful
Rebecca Boyle achievements under this new name, while sticking to the same
Secretary goal we have always had: to help people in our community
achieve independence.
Shari Cook   Since Community Services began in 1989, our Agency has
Treasurer always strived to provide innovative, person-centered services.
In 2017, we celebrated so many incredible accomplishments that
Herb Bellamy have made our Agency even more innovative and allows us to
Board Member provide the people we support with the best services possible.
These accomplishments have focused on employment, transition
Kathy Collado and behavior services, affordable housing and more, all while
Board Member making sure every program is tailored to the unique interests
and abilities of each person we support.
Susan Emhof   Our biggest achievement in 2017 was the opening of our
Board Member Jefferson Career Exploration Center, located on the East Side of
Buffalo. After years of planning, hearing from people we serve,
David Kraus and gaining support within the community, we were able to
Board Member open the new center in October 2017. This incredible site offers
hands-on learning suites where the people we serve can explore
Bradford La Salle different career paths and learn the skills needed for a specific
Board Member job.
We have already begun to partner with local businesses, such
Michael Rivera as The Basil Family of Dealerships and Hyatt Regency, to provide
Board Member Train the Trainer classes. Representatives from these local
businesses meet with people in our employment programs to
Rajat Singhal show them the specific skills and procedures needed to get the
Board Member jobs they want.
The center also offers space for our after-school respite
Herman Tate program, including a sensory room, classrooms and a
Board Member playground. This gives the children we support a safe, engaging
environment to come to after school while their family and care
givers take care of personal business.
In 2017, we also expanded our Behavior Intervention Program
through funding received from the Office of People with

Developmental Disabilities. This service helps support families in their home so that outside
residential placement is not needed. Keeping the family together and happy in the best
possible environment is our goal.
Another program that has seen a huge success is our Family Reimbursement Program,
which assists families with expenses incurred when caring for a person with a developmental
disability. These are costs families cannot get help with elsewhere and without our support,
would not be able to purchase the items or services they need.
Additionally, we constructed a new affordable housing complex, Ridgeway Commons,
which just opened in Lackawanna this spring. This 32-unit complex offers beautiful and
affordable living options for individuals and families, including units set aside for people with
developmental disabilities.
In this Annual Report, you will learn more about our innovative programs and how we are
revolutionizing the way we support the people we serve. It is thanks to our generous donors,
community partners, leadership team and dedicated employees that Community Services can
continue to grow and improve our services to better meet the needs of the people we support
and help them live the most independent lives possible.

developmental disabilities have a safe haven for unwinding
and for navigating their sensory worlds.
Our after-school and weekend Humphrey Street Respite
Program received a $5,565 grant to create a sensory room
for children with autism and other sensory disorders.
With the grant, we were able to purchase several sensory
items including bean bag seats, a bubble tube, fiber optic
curtains, pop-up tunnels and an LED projector.
The sensory room helps children like Brooke and Joey to
control their sensory environment and to calm themselves.
Joey enjoys watching the changing lights and bubbles in
the bubble tube. Brooke said she loves to spend time in
the room when she comes to respite after school.
“I really like to use the room. It’s comfortable and quiet
and helps me relax,” she said.

developmental disabilities throughout the Western
New York region.

This program is funded through a three-year,
$500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of
Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women.

The collaboration is known as HOPE of WNY, which
stands for Helping Others through Protection and
Empowerment. In addition to improving access to
services and education, the collaboration will also
ensure those with intellectual and developmental
disabilities are linked to specialized resources.

Some of the goals of HOPE of WNY include:

• Providing education and outreach that focuses
on recognizing and preventing domestic violence
for people with developmental and intellectual
  disabilities

• Increasing awareness, skills and comfort level
of staff to support those involved in a domestic
  violence situation

• Identifying and enhancing policies and
procedures to remove any barriers that limit
  access to domestic violence services

The Family Justice Center is a wonderful, “one-
stop” resource providing free services for domestic
violence victims and their children through several
partner agencies. We are proud to be partnering
with this organization to better help the people we
serve and educate our community.

Providing a New Home

This spring, we opened our brand new affordable housing complex, Ridgeway Commons, located in Lackawanna.
Development on the building began in 2017, and it was designed by Carmina Wood Morris DPC and built by Creative
Structures Services Construction.
Our goal was to offer affordable, quality housing to people in our community. The completed project features 32
apartments for families and individuals, with 8 units set aside for people with intellectual disabilities. Handicapped
accessible apartments are also available to accommodate people with physical, visual and hearing needs.
The new complex has already become home to several people, including Joel and his wife. They had previously
lived in Puerto Rico when Hurricane Maria hit. Joel said it was devastating, and they had no electricity or water. His
daughter brought them back to Buffalo where they eventually heard about Ridgeway Commons. They were able to
move in earlier this spring.
“I love it here. My wife and I are so happy and grateful,” Joel said about their new apartment.
Ridgeway Commons is also home to Shanon and Charlene, who are living in their own apartments for the first
time.
This project was made possible by New York State Homes and Community Renewal, with funding from the Federal
Low Income Housing Credit program, New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation and the Office for People
with Developmental Disabilities. Thank you to our partners who helped make this project possible.

Mini-Grants 2017

Each year, the Community Services Support Foundation receives many requests for mini-grants, which
are used to fill gaps in services, programs or supports for the people we serve. As the Foundation
continues to grow and be successful, the greater the number of requests that can be awarded and the
more people that can be better served. The Foundation is proud to have helped these dreams become
reality and looks forward to next year’s applications. Below are three of the 2017 mini-grant projects:

Creating Connections Picnic

One of the biggest events of the year is our
Creating Connections Picnic. People we support
had the chance to engage in fun activities,
socialize, and network with various vendors to
learn more about resources available to them,
such as health care organizations and therapy dog
programs. People also enjoyed creating artwork,
face painting, airbrush tattoos, dancing and more!
Thanks to this mini-grant, this event was provided
at no cost to the people we support.

Music Creativity

We are always trying to find new ways to help
the people we support unwind and express their
creativity. Our new recording studio gives people
a place to express their thoughts and feelings
through writing and singing. The studio includes a
professional microphone and recording equipment
and software. It’s a therapeutic experience that
many people in our day programs enjoy.

Garden Center

This mini-grant enabled our employees to
purchase gardening tools and seeds to create
an indoor garden at one of our locations. Our
employees wanted to have something that could
be used all year long and felt that gardening
would not only help keep people engaged but
help them reduce stress as well. The people in our
day program planted a variety of vegetables and
have been dedicated to tending the garden on a
daily basis.

Annual Report 2017

In Memoriam

Last year, Community Services lost two amazing women who were committed to making a difference in
people’s lives and whose careers here had a profound influence on our Agency.

Michelle Archer, a former Community Services
team member, spent many years with our Agency.
She was a compassionate champion of people
with disabilities and always treated everyone she
encountered with dignity, respect and grace.

During her tenure here, Michelle held several
significant roles and helped start our self-advocacy
group, L.E.A.D.E.R.S., which is still thriving today.

Even after she retired, Michelle continued to be a
dedicated supporter of people with developmental
disabilities. She is greatly missed by our Agency, but
is remembered for her sweet, kind and beautiful soul
as well as the wonderful work she did throughout
her time here.

Izetta Williams began her career at Community
Services in 2013. Her drive and passion helped her
work her way up from direct care to eventually
become the Assistant Director of Residential
Services.

She was determined to make sure her passion for
helping others was replicated, so she worked hard
to produce leaders with that same passion.

Izetta dedicated her career to enhancing the lives
of the people we support, promoting inclusion for
everyone, and spreading her passion and positivity
to her co-workers. She is truly missed by our
Agency, but her spirit and commitment to serving
others lives on.

We remember all those we lost in 2017. While they may have left us, the impact they have had on us will
not be forgotten.

Out of the Blue WNY

In 2017, Community Services began a wonderful
partnership with Out of the Blue WNY. The mission of Out
of the Blue is to enhance the quality of life for adults with
disabilities living throughout Western New York.
Last June, Out of the Blue delivered beautiful flowerpots
to several of our residential sites to brighten up their front
yards. Later that summer, they arranged for the Anderson’s
food truck to visit our Jefferson Career Exploration Center.
They provided 100 people in our day programs with free ice
cream, helping to take and serve orders.
In December, Out of the Blue organized a catered lunch
for the people we serve so they were able to eat, relax and
socialize while celebrating the holidays. Out of the Blue also
delivered wreaths to some of our residential sites to help
bring holiday cheer to those we support.
We are so grateful to partner with this wonderful
organization and look forward to continue working with
them in the future.
