www.cancerpatientssupport.net 1 www.cancerpatientssupport.net CANCER PATIENTS SUPPORT GROUP Newsletter 2023

2022 has not been a bad year for the support group. I would like to thank everyone who have supported us over the past year and especially those on the committee who have worked very hard to help raise money for cancer patients. Also a big thank you to our colleagues at Breast of Friends Group for their continued help and support for cancer patients. The photo on the front cover is of Malcom with his wife pouring ice cold water over him to help raise money for cancer. Thank you Malcolm and Lynn. Our Movie Icon Calendar was a success which also helped raise much finance for the CPSG. Thank you to everyone who not only participated but all those who helped to sell them. Our sincere thanks goes to Kevin Jones who initiated the idea in the first place. If you still haven’t got a calendar, please get in touch. We have to, once again, thank Fitzgerald’s Estates for their support for this magazine. We now have another estate agent who wants to help us. Chesterton’s the estate agents have now said they will support us. We welcome that. www.cancerpatientssupport.net 4 HELPLINE: (+357) 97 76 09 89 May I, through your Newsletter, thank you and your colleagues in the Cancer Patients Support Group for their support and encouragement of the Friends’ Hospice Foundation as we strive to open our new Hospice in Stephanie Village, Tala. As workers in the same field, we hope that our joint efforts will continue to offer support to those who find themselves in difficult circumstances. I was delighted to show you and your colleagues around the building earlier in the year. The tranquil setting and the spacious house, given to us free of charge for as long as it remains a Hospice, has delighted the many visitors and supporters who have seen it. As an invaluable local, and much needed, amenity, we are anxious to open as soon as possible. Our shops and generous donors have ensured that we have the funding to begin the renovations. The Ministry of Health has reviewed, amended and approved the detailed plans drawn up free of charge by our Architect, Yiannis Koutsolambros. We are awaiting the final planning approval from the Planning Authority in Paphos before we can begin. Local businesses, both Cypriot and British, have offered their support and we are awaiting the final piece in the bureaucratic jigsaw that will see us ready to resume our mission of offering free Palliative Care to all those in the Paphos District who need it. This is a letter from the chairman of the Friends Hospice Chris Jones.

www.cancerpatientssupport.net 5 www.cancerpatientssupport.net On April 23rd on St George’s Day, I’ll be taking part in the London Marathon. I will be raising funds for the amazing ENT unit at St George’s Hospital London. This is to show how much my family and I appreciate the outstanding care my dad received, which ultimately lead to saving his life. My dad, who lives in Paphos Cyprus, was diagnosed with stage four cancer, Carcinoma Expleomorphic Adenoma, to the side of his neck. The tumour ran through the main nerve which also had to be removed in major surgery, this caused a lot of issues for him, including not being able to close one eye, teeth be removed and not having the use of one side of his face. After the outstanding work by Mr Offo the ENT surgeon and Mr Vesley, the plastic surgeon they successfully removed the cancer in a twenty hour operation, with a swift 5 hour operation by Mr Vesley to repair one eye. This second operation enabled my dad to once again to be able to open and close his eye. With one side of his face also lifted this has made every day life more comfortable for him. The care my dad received by Drs Mr Vesley and Mr Offo was outstanding. The anticipated news of the ALL CLEAR was absolutely brilliant. I obviously witnessed all this as I drove him to and from his appointments. My dad went through absolute hell over a very long period. His incredibly strong mind and determination not to let this horrible disease beat him will always stick with me for ever. Thanks to those two doctors my dad was able to attend my wedding last year, for this I will always be grateful. A letter to inspire you. by Ricky Chapman.
