President’s Letter

What are God’s plans for you in 2018?

hen two disciples first saw Jesus, they asked “Where are you staying?” Jesus said, “Come, and you will see”
(John 1:38, 39). This is all Jesus asked of the first disciples, followers who barely knew him. It’s all Jesus
Wasks of us today.

It’s the time of year when we roll out the old and bring in the new. It’s the time for making new resolutions. We
resolve to spend more time with family, we resolve to work efficiently, and we decide to become healthier by dieting
and exercising.

The start of a new year is an opportunity to assess our dreams, hopes and goals for the coming year. But the question
that the scriptures and our teachers here at Aquinas invite us to reflect on is: what are God’s plans for us this year?
This January, the Board of Trustees adopted a new five-year strategic plan, which outlines the initiatives and goals
Aquinas will use to guide us to where we need to be in the future, and equally important, where Jesus is calling us as
a Catholic school to “come and see.”

Aquinas Institute continues to be a beacon of light for our community. We have 744 students, 180 full- and part-
time employees, and over 14,000 living alumni. The results of our faith-based education are excellent! Young men
and women prepared for college and life beyond; tomorrow’s leaders in our family, business and community who
are ready and anxious to answer God’s call to “come and see.” This issue of The Landmark provides examples of how
members of our Aquinas community were called to serve, and how they answered the call.

We don’t know what the future holds for us. Rather than just pray for what we want, can we resolve to pray more
often and pray that we hear God’s voice when he calls us? In 2002, I prayed for guidance on my next career move.
I answered the call, which brought me to Aquinas. I signed-up for seven years and 15 years later, I am still here. I
continue to commit myself to serve Aquinas as President. I do so with great joy because of the dedication of our fac-
ulty and staff, the sense of pride and accomplishment I get with each graduating class, and because of the dedicated
support we receive from alumni and friends through their volunteering, prayers and financial gifts.
With God’s grace and your support, we will work our strategic plan and fulfill our mission that is God’s plan for our
school. Thank you for your continued support. As you establish your goals for 2018, I invite you to prayerfully con-
sider what God’s plan is for you and let your response be “Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.”

Happy New Year!

It goes without saying that the people and experiences in our lives are what inspire

enough to remember the Basilian House at 402 Augustine Street, Helen
was the woman behind the scenes making three-, sometime four-course

From 1976 until 2000, their kitchen was Helen’s second home, Helen meets Pope John Paul II. In 2002, she cooked for him and nearly 50 others staying on Strawberry

Th e memory of how the position came about, written down on a

Marybeth (Bell) McConnell ’93 was working full-time as an operating room nurse in 2012 when her life took

a drastic turn. Marybeth’s husband Bill – owner of Healthy Glass Tinting, a residential and commercial window
tinting business here in Rochester – was in a severe car accident that left him with broken bones and a severed
artery, which lead to strokes.

The couple continued to run the tinting business with
more involvement from Marybeth. In 2014, she took over.

“It was a challenge with his brain injury

Bill has continued his recovery and is
still very much a part of the business.
The two recently fi nished their largest
job ever – installing 6,500 square feet

Additionally, they work with many big

While nursing was what Marybeth

an academic scholarship from Upstate Golf Charities to attend college. In addition, she was

She presented the gift to Th e Notre Dame Learning Center – a sponsored ministry of the School

Colombo ’04 Helps Hurricane Harvey Victims

As they watched the devastation Hurricane Harvey unleashed on
Houston, TX back in August, Dallas residents Brandon Colombo

The two loaded up a Jeep full of supplies and safety gear, hitched
a boat they bought on Craigslist to the back, and headed down to

With Houston’s main highways under water and unable to get

smaller towns outside of Houston that were hit hard by the storm.
The two ended up in Orange, where a mandatory evacuation
was taking place. Brandon described the scene when they got
there as chaotic – rising water, houses and cars that were fully
submerged, relief workers everywhere, and residents trying to which was admittedly unprepared for the hurricane. Brandon

The Calihan Endowed Fund

oe Calihan ’56 still remembers the visit Father Gardner, CSB paid him in Pittsburgh more than thirty years
Jaft er graduating high school because, he said, “it’s what brought me back to Aquinas.”

At the time, Joe and his wife Brenda were presented with the opportunity to name the school’s chapel, which
for Joe, was the opportunity he had been waiting for. Since 1991, it has been known as the Martin J. Calihan ’45
Chapel in memory of his brother Marty, who Joe remembers as his hero and someone who “stood for a belief in
serving others.”

Building on that legacy and belief in serving others, Joe and Brenda Calihan started the Calihan Foundation with
the objective of supporting the institutions that have helped them and their family members throughout their
lives. “We feel strongly about the importance of the values that Aquinas provides to students during the teenage
years that are critically important to the development of their character and their roles as citizens,” said Joe. “We
think the school is doing an amazing job of providing both academic and personal values.”

For these reasons, Joe and Brenda have recently made an unrestricted gift to Aquinas that will undoubtedly have
a lasting impact on the students, faculty and staff , and allow them to continue to deliver the core values that
Aquinas represents.

Joe is the Managing Partner of Bradford Capital Partners – a venture capital and private equity fi rm specializing
in venture capital investments and acquisition and development of entrepreneurial businesses. He admits that he
has been very lucky and fortunate in his business career, which has allowed him to give back – both fi nancially
and with his time and talent. Joe has served on the Board of Directors for many Pittsburgh area organizations
including Bradford Schools, Inc., Tender Care Learning Centers, Extra Mile Education Foundation, the Pittsburgh
Foundation, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and the
Pittsburgh Symphony. In 2014, he started the Mansmann Foundation, to assist the development of entrepreneurs
in the underserved communities of Pittsburgh seeking economic revitalization.

Joe and Brenda raised four children and are now the proud grandparents of 14 grandchildren ranging in ages
from nine to 22. With his personal and professional success Joe gives a lot of credit to Aquinas. “I still remember
things said to me by the priests and nuns that resonate with me about how to live one’s life appropriately,” he
stated. “I hope that maybe this message resonates with someone out there who will also give back.”

Goodness, Discipline & Knowledge Society

Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge—this motto is the foundation of the Basilian
tradition and has been an integral part of life at Aquinas for more than a century now.

We deemed it only fi tting that the creation of a Goodness, Discipline and
Knowledge Society (or “GDK Society”) would include those who choose to
remember Aquinas in their estate plans, thus ensuring their continued legacy
evermore.

We salute those who remember Aquinas in this way with grateful appreciation. The
names of those alumni and friends who have told us of their plans are listed below.

My parents have always taught me to be kind, disciplined, and to seek knowledge wherever possible, aligning with the Basilian tradition
here at Aquinas. I know that my capacity to do all of these things will expand ten-fold through the Aquinas experience. Aquinas will open
doors to see things differently, expand my abilities, improve my character, and push me as I progress through the years, an experience I know
I am lucky to be a part of. – JS, Class of 2021
