Our faculty and staff are selflessly devoted to the success of our students and to helping
- Chris Grout them fulfill their potential as they find their place in the world. Our students care for each other
and create a sense of community that is beyond compare.

We expect much from our students because admission to Aquinas Institute says so
much about their talent and potential. We expect much from ourselves as well, striving always
to improve the campus and learning environment.

At Aquinas, our students, faculty and staff are challenged by a rich and personal ap-
proach to education in the context of a dynamic private Catholic education that prepares them
for college, life beyond and to be agents of change in the world.

The Department of Athletics, guided by the principles of educating the “whole child”, is
committed to providing an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as
an integral part of a student-athlete’s educational experience. Specifically, through
participation in our athletic programs, Aquinas student-athletes pursue academic excellence;
refine athletic skills; demonstrate leadership; engage in good sportsmanship; and serve others.
The Department of Athletics is committed to compliance with the policies and regulations
associated with membership in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

We thank you for keeping your cheering and support always positive. Good Luck to all
the athletes.

Message from the Athletic Director

Dear Loyal Supporter of the Mission Bouts,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 87th anniversary of the Aquinas Mission
Bouts. As an alumnus of Aquinas, I am proud to be part of such a rich tradition of academic and ath-
letic excellence. Throughout its long and proud history, Aquinas Institute has embraced a philosophy
that a well-rounded athletic program is an integral part of the educational mission. I am looking for-
ward to welcoming back the alumni of the boxing program who have helped Aquinas build such an
outstanding tradition built on the principles of goodness, discipline and knowledge.

As a Catholic institution, Aquinas espouses Christian values and principles, as well
as promoting the development of the human spirit, mind and body. Aquinas athletics will continue to
serve as a vehicle for these qualities, as well as fostering a safe, fun and friendly environment for our
student athletes to develop strong character, integrity, loyalty, and a strong sense of team work and
sportsmanship.

Aquinas is proud that a large percentage of our student body participates in athletics. These
students will not only develop athletic skills by working with our outstanding coaching staff, but also
benefit from an athletic philosophy that promotes fitness for life, and a commitment to a healthy life-
style free of drugs and alcohol.

The Mission Bout epitomizes the true spirit of giving. This event involves raising money for the
Basilian Missions in Mexico and Columbia. This is perhaps the most important message of the
Bouts. Through our efforts to help others we also receive much in return.

I want to express my best wishes to all who participate in tonight’s Mission Bouts. I especially
want to thank the Sirianni family for donating trophies, Bill Leonardo ‘80, Teckla Bohme, Matt and
Gina Tavino and all the very supportive boxing parents who have dedicated countless hours to or-
ganizing and planning all activities associated with the Aquinas Mission Bouts. This has been one of
our best years in my memory for parent volunteers, so I no doubt omitted someone’s name and I
apologize. Mostly I would like to commend and thank Coach Dom Arioli ‘73 who for more than two
decades has inspired our students to the highest standards of selflessness, sportsmanship, dedica-
tion and courage. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to Dom, his assistants Katia Chaban, Henry
Kaester ‘09, Tommy Fornarola ‘11, Dillon Cup ‘13, James Graham and all those who’ve helped to
pass on lessons and values that will last a lifetime.

Aquinas Evermore,
Anthony Bianchi ‘81
Director of Athletics

STOP BY AFTER TONIGHT’S BOUTS — OR ANY TIME!!

Message from the Principal

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you and your family to the Aquinas campus for the
87th Annual Mission Bouts. In our world today there are very few things that have the history and
tradition of the Mission Bouts. This program is about much more than boxing, in many ways it is
a perfect microcosm of the entire AQ experience of excellence, perseverance, community, character,
and tradition. The Aquinas curriculum is focused on educating the whole student. The boxing
program under Coach Dom’s leadership, is a perfect example and extension of what is taught in
the classroom. Goodness, discipline, and knowledge are core values here.

One of my favorite things to do as principal is to see our students in action as leaders,
athletes, and performers. I am proud to see our students represent Christian character, confidence,
determination, courage, and positive attitude in all of their endeavors. Our students live our mission.
I have the opportunity to see the excitement and enthusiasm our students have for one another and
for Aquinas. Our students are our strength and I am grateful for the opportunity to see them learn
and grow with each day. The journey of an Aquinas education is centered on educating the whole
student with solid academics that prepare them for success and leadership in college and the world.
Our mission calls upon us to “teach all students goodness, discipline, and knowledge supported in
Gospel values …” As a Catholic school, our motto “Credo quid quid dixit dei filius” (I believe
whatever the Son of God has said), provides a framework for everything that happens at Aquinas.

The academic accomplishments of our student athletes are the testaments to hard work and
dedication. The Class of 2018 collectively earned over $16 million in college scholarships and are
attending some of the best colleges and universities in America. I am continuously
impressed by the accomplishments of our students. Aquinas continues to shine as a mark of
excellence in Rochester.

I encourage all of our students to “strive for that which they were made for.” I wish all of
our boxers and fans a great season. Thank you for supporting Aquinas.

Aquinas Evermore,

Theodore N. Mancini ‘88
Principal

These past 6 years of participating in the boxing program have gone faster than a blink of an eye. I
came to Aquinas in 7th grade and seeing how I transformed into the person I am today, could not
have happened without the guidance of Coach Dom. When you join the boxing program, there is
more to it than boxing and getting in the ring. It has taught me to work hard and earn what you
want. From all the amazing workouts, fun laps around the track and the endless amount of pushups
at practice. Coach Dom is an amazing role model. He is supportive and motivates us to try harder
and give it our best.

Looking back on all the countless memories and friendships I have made with my teammates and
coaches, it is going to be hard to let go of something that I love so much. I remember coming to the
mission bouts starting at the age of 5 and having it be one of the top days I look forward to out of
the entire year. Running around the gym, carrying all the equipment back to the locker room, being
around the big kids. Now, it is time for my last Mission Bouts! it’s hard to believe how fast the years
have gone. The Mission Bouts have taught this: we may be in different corners fighting to be the
winner but we are still one family no matter what happens. We are always all there for each other in
or out of the ring.

I want to give a big thank to all my coaches; Dom, Kat, Tommy, Graham, Henry, and Mike. I could
not have done it without all of you. It has been a fun journey over these past years at Aquinas.
Thank you for putting me in the right shoes and giving me a path to follow as I take the next step in
life. Boxing will always be in my blood and there is nothing that can take away my love for this
sport. Thank You.

~Sam Leonardo '19

~I have been a part of the Aquinas Boxing Program for five years. During this time, I have learned a
lot through the sport of boxing. I have learned how to be a better person through demonstrating my
leadership abilities through my work ethic and competitive spirit. Boxing has taught me that hard
work and determination leads to personal benefits inside and outside of the ring. The Aquinas Box-
ing team also taught me the importance of having good people who support you in athletics and in
life because they are the ones who help you persevere, especially during those late practices on
Friday nights or when you’re having a bad day in school.

I will be forever grateful for being a part of this program and the relationships I have formed from
it. Thank you to all the boxers both past and present. To the boxers who have graduated before
me, thank you for your guidance and friendship. To the younger boxers, never give up even if what
you are doing seems impossible. Trust me, the hard work always pays off!

Lastly and most important, thank you Coach Dom and the entire coaching staff for all the hard work
and countless hours that you all have put into making the Aquinas Boxing Program a memory I will
carry with me the rest of my life.

~Frankie Tavino ‘19

While I have not been around the program long, it is evident to me that boxing is an experience like 2019 AQ Boxing Team
no other. The program has been very rewarding for me and if given the opportunity to do over my
years of high school, I would have joined boxing in a heartbeat. The exhilaration of getting into a If you can maintain that integrity in whatever you do, you
ring can be matched by few things. I have to give a huge thanks to all the coaches for being so pa- can't go wrong. That's what I tell my kids, anyway.
tient and working with me throughout the year, it’s been one to remember.
~Nick Annechino '19 -George Foreman

“Being a boxer at Aquinas has taught me discipline more than anything. When I started boxing my
junior year I did it with mindset of just getting in shape but now, I do it because it’s been something
I can fall back on when everything else is hectic in my life. Showing up to practice and being able to
train with my coaches and teammates has been a privilege I will always be grateful for. If it wasn’t
for ALL my coaches and my parents, I would’ve never made it this far. Stepping in the ring my sen-
ior year was an eye opener and each time I got in I always learned something stepping out. Thank
you to everyone for your support and love. I will forever take these two amazing years of boxing at
Aquinas with me forever.”
~Yasmeena Chambers '19

When I joined boxing with my sister sophomore year, I really didn’t know if I could finish the season,
but the support of my family and friends kept me going from start to finish and brought me back the
next year and the year after that. Boxing has taught me more then just how to throw a few punches.
I learned how to persevere when I thought I couldn’t keep going and every time I lost a bout I
wouldn’t dwell on the loss I would find a lesson in it so I could become a better fighter. I’m really
gonna miss being on the team next year because we are really a family and it’s been such an honor
to train with my teammates and coaches.
