Message from the President

A MISSION OF EDUCATION, FAITH, LEADERSHIP AND HOPE

Dear Boxing fans, patrons and guests,

Welcome to Aquinas Institute.

At The Aquinas Institute, we are a community of faculty, staff and students who
are inspired by the centuries-old tradition of Catholic and Basilian education. Over the
years, we have looked to the Congregations of St. Basil and the Sisters of Saint Joseph
as an example of goodness, discipline and knowledge just as we have looked to our
other patrons: the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Thomas
Aquinas, and St. John Bosco.

Our faculty and staff are selflessly devoted to the success of our students and to helping
them fulfill their potential as they find their place in the world. Our students care for each other
and create a sense of community that is beyond compare.

We expect much from our students because admission to Aquinas Institute says so
much about their talent and potential. We expect much from ourselves as well, striving always
to improve the campus and learning environment.

At Aquinas, our students, faculty and staff are challenged by a rich and personal ap-
proach to education in the context of a dynamic private Catholic education that prepares them
for college, life beyond and to be agents of change in the world.

The Department of Athletics, guided by the principles of educating the “whole child”, is
committed to providing an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as
an integral part of a student-athlete’s educational experience. Specifically, through
participation in our athletic programs, Aquinas student-athletes pursue academic excellence;
refine athletic skills; demonstrate leadership; engage in good sportsmanship; and serve others.
The Department of Athletics is committed to compliance with the policies and regulations
associated with membership in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

We thank you for keeping your cheering and support always positive. Good Luck to all
the athletes.

Michael R Daley ’79, President

Message from the Athletic Director

Dear Loyal Supporter of the Mission Bouts,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 86th anniversary of the Aquinas Mission
Bouts. As an alumnus of Aquinas, I am proud to be part of such a rich tradition of academic and ath-
letic excellence. Throughout its long and proud history, Aquinas Institute has embraced a philosophy
that a well-rounded athletic program is an integral part of the educational mission. I am looking for-
ward to welcoming back the alumni of the boxing program who have helped Aquinas build such an
outstanding tradition built on the principles of goodness, discipline and knowledge.

As a Catholic institution, Aquinas espouses Christian values and principles, as well
as promoting the development of the human spirit, mind and body. Aquinas athletics will continue to
serve as a vehicle for these qualities, as well as fostering a safe, fun and friendly environment for our
student athletes to develop strong character, integrity, loyalty, and a strong sense of team work and
sportsmanship.

Aquinas is proud that a large percentage of our student body participates in athletics. These
students will not only develop athletic skills by working with our outstanding coaching staff, but also
benefit from an athletic philosophy that promotes fitness for life, and a commitment to a healthy life-
style free of drugs and alcohol.

The Mission Bout epitomizes the true spirit of giving. This event involves raising money for the
Basilian Missions in Mexico and Columbia. This is perhaps the most important message of the
Bouts. Through our efforts to help others we also receive much in return.

I want to express my best wishes to all who participate in tonight’s Mission Bouts. I especially
want to thank Mary Bills, Kevin Kaester, Meredith Keymel for her help in publicizing the event, Joe
Sirianni ’74 and Virginia Sirianni, for donating trophies, Bill Leonardo ‘80, Teckla Bohme, Dave Rob-
ertson, Matt and Gina Tavino and all the very supportive boxing parents who have dedicated count-
less hours to organizing and planning all activities associated with the Aquinas Mission Bouts. This
has been one of our best years in my memory for parent volunteers, so I no doubt omitted
someone’s name and I apologize. Mostly I would like to commend and thank Coach Dom Arioli who
for more than two decades has inspired our students to the highest standards of selflessness,
sportsmanship, dedication and courage. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to Dom, his assistants Katia
Chaban, Henry Kaester ‘09, Tommy Fornarola ‘11, James Graham and all those who’ve helped to
pass on lessons and values that will last a lifetime.

Aquinas Evermore,
Anthony Bianchi ‘81
Director of Athletics

Message from the Principal

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you and your family to the Aquinas campus for the
th
86 Annual Mission Bouts. In our world today there are very few things that have the history and
tradition of the Mission Bouts. This program is about much more than boxing, in many ways it is
a perfect microcosm of the entire AQ experience of excellence, perseverance, community, character,

and tradition. The Aquinas curriculum is focused on educating the whole student. The boxing
program under Coach Dom’s leadership, is a perfect example and extension of what is taught in

the classroom. Goodness, discipline, and knowledge are core values here.

One of my favorite things to do as principal is to see our students in action as leaders,
athletes, and performers. I am proud to see our students represent Christian character, confidence,

determination, courage, and positive attitude in all of their endeavors. Our students live our mission.
I have the opportunity to see the excitement and enthusiasm our students have for one another and
for Aquinas. Our students are our strength and I am grateful for the opportunity to see them learn

and grow with each day. The journey of an Aquinas education is centered on educating the whole

student with solid academics that prepare them for success and leadership in college and the world.
Our mission calls upon us to “teach all students goodness, discipline, and knowledge supported in
Gospel values …” As a Catholic school, our motto “Credo quid quid dixit dei filius” (I believe

whatever the Son of God has said), provides a framework for everything that happens at Aquinas.

The academic accomplishments of our student athletes are the testaments to hard work and
dedication. The Class of 2017 collectively earned almost $18 million in college scholarships and are

attending some of the best colleges and universities in America. I am continuously
impressed by the accomplishments of our students. Aquinas continues to shine as a mark of

excellence in Rochester.

I encourage all of our students to “strive for that which they were made for.” I wish all of
our boxers and fans a great season. Thank you for supporting Aquinas.

Aquinas Evermore,

Theodore N. Mancini ‘88

Its not how big or small the team is. What is important to me is that we've
been able to motivate and encourage at least one student positively. That we
have provided a safe place for them to grow, and that they can take those les-
sons, and the discipline of the hours of conditioning and time in the ring, with
them on their journey in life, so they can flourish. AQ Proud.

Nicole Perrello ‘18 Savannah Wright ‘18

My name is Eric Delgado. This is my first year/first time Boxing and also my last year at Aquinas.

When I first joined the Boxing program I was not sure if I was going to like it. I was inspired to join
because I wanted to try something new. I am not very outgoing, I wasn’t really competitive and I
wasn’t the type to be rough with people. This sport has taught me so much and I am so glad I
joined.

Through Boxing, I have learned that is more than being rough or hurting others. It is about making
yourself a better person through training. I have learned that I am capable of doing things that I
never thought I could do. I have learned to take constructive criticism to better myself. Most im-
portant, I have learned that discipline and hard work always pays off.

I appreciate that the coaches and teammates took the time to help me improve so I could be better
each time and each fight. I will never forget this experience or the people by my side throughout
this journey.

Eric Delgado ‘18

Boxing for Aquinas this year has taught me so many amazing things, but it has left me with one
question that I can’t get out of my head: “Why didn’t I join earlier?” I wish I hadn’t waited until I was
a senior to box. But that opportunity has passed me by, so I have to be happy for what time I did
have on the Aquinas boxing team.

I joined boxing for a new challenge, and boy was it! From barely being able to use my arms the
next day to having a sore nose, boxing has gotten me into the best physical shape of my life. Box-
ing has also gotten me into good mental shape. I knew I wanted to fight, but I didn’t know if I could
actually do it. The coaches gave me all the right encouragement, keeping my nervousness
(somewhat) at bay during my first and later spars. Boxing has brought my mental toughness to a
whole new level, and now I know I can take on any challenge.

So, to all the coaches and athletes, thank you for helping me to grow in ways I never expected!

Brendan Humphries ‘18

To start off, I want to say thank you to the coaches, and my fellow boxers, past and present, for
making my experience in the boxing program enjoyable.
Looking into the program my freshman year, I saw many opportunities for leadership, friendship,

and the obvious, fitness. Through the four years here in the program I have made many friendships,
and amazing memories that I wouldn’t have had if I didn’t join AQ boxing. If it wasn’t for these
friendships, I wouldn’t have made it to this season and became the boxer I am today.

This year as a captain has taught me how to lead, and help the younger boxers on the team. It has
taught me how to use my voice in times that I usually would not have. Being a captain has helped
me come out of my shell, and be more social than I ever have before.
I know the things that I have learned, I will carry with me through the rest of my life. Once again
would like to thank the coaches (especially Mrs. Bohme, who doesn’t get enough appreciation <3),
and I wish everyone the best of luck next year.

The Aquinas Boxing family lost two huge supporters of

the Mission Bouts in 2018.

Joseph McShea ‘49 and Richard Pakozdi will be deeply missed.

Richard Pakozdi passed away January 5, 2018 after a tough
battle with cancer. He was 67. Among his accomplishments,
Pakozdi reffed three world title bouts: Luis Ortiz-Bryant Jen-
nings (WBA interim heavy), Jesus Cuellar-Claudio Marrero
(WBA interim feather) and Christy Martin-Dakota Stone #1
(WBC super welter).

An athlete in his youth, Pakozdi was a golden gloves boxer
and played minor league baseball in Florida. Pakozdi began
refereeing in the amateurs, especially in the Rochester, New
York area, including golden gloves, Empire State Games and
the Aquinas Mission bouts.

Pakozdi entered the pro officiating ranks in 1991 and within
two years scored the job of third man in the ring for Oscar de
la Hoya’s sixth pro bout with Mike Grable. Other future or
former champs Pakozdi reffed during his twenty-five years in
the squared ring were Lonnie Bradley, Aaron Davis, Hasim
Rahman, Charles Murray, Julio Cesar Green, Tim With-
erspoon, Shannon Briggs, Carlos Molina, Serhiy Dzinziruk,
Alberto Machado and Demetrius Andrade.

Pakozdi also is a past recipient of the Rochester Boxing Hall
of Fame’s Carmen Basilio award.

THANK YOU to our inspirational speaker tonight!
