2019 AQ Hall of Fame Program

9/15/19

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Aquinas Institute 2019 Hall of Fame dinner.
We educate our students in the Basilian tradition, drawing from Psalm 119 the principles of Goodness,
Discipline and Knowledge. Since 1902, over 19,000 students have graduated from Aquinas. Together
with our partners, The Sisters of St. Joseph and their Pre-K—Grade 6 Nazareth Elementary School, we
have the largest and only Pre-K—Grade 12 Catholic school system in Rochester. In September 2015,
Aquinas added two classes for grade six, converting our Junior High into a true Middle School.
More than ever, the world needs institutions like Aquinas Institute, which challenge young men and wom-
en to become future leaders and responsible members of our local communities and global society. We
are committed to developing people of faith, integrity, character and leadership. At Aquinas Institute, our
faculty and staff are devoted to the success of each child with a focus on these key areas:

 Academic Excellence
 Character Development
 Creating Model Citizens of the Future
Tonight you will see first-hand how the traditions, mission and education of an Aquinas student has fostered a lifetime of leadership
and success exemplified by our honorees within their careers and as members of their family and community. We are proud of their
contributions to making our world a better place and for answering the call to be Christ-like in their community.
Congratulations to all of our honorees for this very special recognition. Please enjoy the evening.
Aquinas Evermore,
Michael R. Daley ’79, President

Welcome to the Aquinas Hall of Fame Induction!
One of my favorite things to do as principal is to see our students in action. I am proud to see our students
represent Christian character, confidence, determination, courage, and positivity in all of their endeavors. Our
students live our mission. I also have an incredible opportunity to see alumni continue to carry our mission
beyond graduation. Our Hall of Fame recognizes the many accomplishments that are the legacy of an AQ
education.
Our students are our strength, and I am grateful for the opportunity to see them learn and grow. The journey
of an Aquinas education is centered on educating the whole student with solid academics that prepare them
for success and leadership in college and the world. Our mission calls upon us to “teach all students good-
ness, discipline, and knowledge supported in Gospel values …” As a Catholic school, our motto Credo quid
quid dixit dei filius (I believe whatever the Son of God has said), provides a framework for everything that happens at Aquinas.
The Aquinas curriculum is focused on educating the whole student. Co-curricular activities and athletics are an extension of what is
taught in the classroom. Goodness, discipline, and knowledge are core values here. The academic accomplishments of our student
athletes are the testaments to hard work and dedication. The Class of 2019 collectively earned nearly $15 million in college scholar-
ships and are attending some of the best colleges and universities in America, and 15 of our varsity teams were celebrated as Scholar
Athlete Teams last year with a team GPA of over 90%. I am continuously impressed by the accomplishments of our students. Aquinas
continues to shine as a mark of excellence in Rochester. I encourage all of our students to “strive for that which they were made for.”
Thank you for supporting Aquinas.
Aquinas Evermore,
Theodore N. Mancini ’88, Principal

I am thrilled to welcome you to the Aquinas Institute Hall of Fame dinner, a night that celebrates the remark-
able people, families, and teams of our treasured alma mater. In being new to AQ for the third moment in my
life, I find myself again surrounded by the rich tradition of our remarkable AQ family. Aquinas continues to
be an integral part of my life and I proudly stand with you to represent the maroon and white in our commu-
nity and beyond.
In returning to serve you and Aquinas from my previous role as Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the
Diocese of Rochester, I’m most excited to partner in building a strong future for AQ. Our future will be sus-
tained through the strong network of alumni and friends near and far.
We deeply appreciate your support of Aquinas’ mission to teach all students goodness, discipline, and
knowledge.
Aquinas Evermore,
Anthony Cook, Ed.D. ’99, Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Development

AQUINAS INSTITUTE HALL OF FAME

The Aquinas Sports Booster Club and the Aquinas Alumni Association inaugurated a HALL OF FAME at the school to
recognize formally those persons who have made substantial contributions to the spirit and tradition of Aquinas Institute.
This prestigious award is given each year at the Hall of Fame Dinner. Any Aquinas alumnus, faculty member, coach, or any friend of the
school who over the years has represented what Aquinas stands for is eligible for membership in the HALL OF FAME. A plaque will be indi-
vidually struck for each inductee and placed in the HALL OF FAME display located in the President’s Office hallway.

TEAM

The 1979 Football Team

1979 found the Aquinas gridders in a familiar position, at the top of area football.
Just like many past Aquinas teams, the 1979 squad consisted of many talented
ball players and a lot of determination and dedication. It was these qualities plus
the guidance of Coaches Teta, Ferrara and Pilliter that led the team to a 9-1 over-
all record, the City Catholic crown and the first Section Five football championship
for Aquinas.
The only loss of the season came in the form of a mid-season upset to Bishop
Kearney, but in typical Li’l Irish fashion, the team bounced back to their winning
ways and were victorious in every other season game.
Aquinas is fortunate to have many of its past teams in the annals of history, and
the 1979 team solidified its ranks among the best of them with their record-setting
season.

Kevin McMahan ’02

Kevin McMahan was born and raised in Rochester, NY and found his way to Aquinas on the
advice of his mother, Margaret Izzard. Kevin was raised in the inner city of Rochester and want-
ed to attend public school with his friends. However, his mother had a vision for a better educa-
tion, more opportunity and fewer distractions at Aquinas.

At Aquinas, Kevin starred in basketball and football under coaches Mike Dianetti and David Nie-
men, respectively. While Kevin went on to receive multiple accolades and scholarship offers for
sports, his Aquinas career had humble beginnings after being cut from the junior varsity basket-
ball team, coached by Joseph Knapp. However, Kevin was a starter on the Varsity team as a
sophomore. That team won a sectional title and went to play at Glens Falls Arena for a chance
at the State Championship. Kevin was a three-year starter in basketball, received Section V First
Team honors and an All-State award. He eventually went on to win a gold medal after qualifying
for the Empire State Games.

As a football player, Kevin was a late bloomer and didn’t actively play until his senior year, but
ended being both All-City and All-State selection as part of the team that won the NYS Champi-
onship. Kevin decided to accept a scholarship to Division I University of Maine, where he played
all 4 years and majored in Accounting.

As a freshman for the UMaine Blackbears, Kevin set the conference record for consecutive
games with 100 receiving yards by a freshman and won rookie of the year honors. Kevin went
on to set other school records for receiving touchdowns in a single game and ranked in the top
five for receiving yards in a single game. One of the most notable moments was when underdog
UMaine beat Mississippi State after Kevin caught the game-winning touchdown in the 4th quar-
ter. The next year, Kevin caught a long touchdown pass against the University of Nebraska,
which ultimately led to national recognition and his NFL draft stock’s rise.

After the 2005 football season, Kevin gained national recognition for running the second fastest
40 yard dash in the country, officially being clocked at 4.31 seconds. Kevin was drafted in the
NFL’s 7th round by the Oakland Raiders and had a four-year career playing for the NY Giants,
Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers.

After Kevin’s season with the Carolina Panthers, he decided to call Charlotte, NC home, where
he currently resides with his wife, Amy, and son, Mason. After retiring from football, Kevin ac-
cepted a job for Fortune 100 Company, TIAA CREF where he worked as an investment account-
ant and is now in Asset Management and Investment Transactions covering the Southeast US.
In his free time, Kevin enjoys racing motorcycles and dirt bikes and having his family come
watch the races. He also enjoys playing in men’s basketball leagues across the Carolinas.

MERITORIOUS SERVICE

Paul Haney ’59

Paul E Haney was born on February 15, 1941 in Rochester, the youngest of three children and
the grandson of Irish immigrants. He was raised on Tacoma Street and in the Catholic Church,
a faith to which he remained devoted for his entire life.
As a student at Aquinas, Paul was on the honor roll and participated in Perpetual Rosary, The
Maroon and White school newspaper, bowling, the German, chemistry and physics clubs and
the debate club. Paul’s skills in debate served him well throughout his academic and profes-
sional careers, as he was an all-star collegiate debater who could convincingly argue any side
of an issue. Paul was crowned the best individual debater in five tournaments during his sen-
ior year at St. John Fisher College. It was at St. John Fisher that Paul developed an interest in
public life, joining the Young Democratic Club and becoming a ward Democratic committee-
man.
In May 1963, Paul made headlines as a 22-year-old for receiving 23 job offers. He turned
them all down to work toward a master’s degree in business administration at Syracuse Uni-
versity, which he completed in 1964. Paul then moved to New York City for a job with a large
accounting firm. He returned to Rochester shortly thereafter and resumed his involvement in
city and county politics—an involvement that would span more than 50 years.
Paul’s public roles included serving on the Rochester City Council for 12 years, in the Monroe
County Legislature for 10 years, and as Monroe County’s finance director from 1988-1992.
In addition to serving the city and county, Paul was a faithful Aquinas alumnus, serving on the
Board of Trustees until his untimely death in July of 2019. Paul served as a committee mem-
ber on the Finance, Investment, Audit, Human Resources, Academic Mission and Middle
States accreditation committees and served as an officer of the Board of Trustees as Treasur-
er and Chair over his many years of service. Paul also served on the Class of 1959 Reunion
Committee and 50th Reunion Gift Committee. In addition, Paul established two scholarships
at Aquinas, which, to-date have helped dozens of children attend AQ.

DISTINGUISHED CAREER

Robert Porretti ’64

Bob is a Rochesterian born in 1946 to two immigrant parents from Celano, Italy. His
parents were from the same town in Italy, but actually met and were married in Roches-
ter. The life values that they taught Bob were supported and strengthened during his
four years at Aquinas. After graduating from Aquinas in 1964, he attended Ithaca Col-
lege and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Shortly after gradua-
tion, he started his career at the national accounting firm of Haskins & Sells, known to-
day as Deloitte & Touche. He met his wife Janette in November of 1968 and they were
married in August of 1972.

Shortly after being married, Bob joined the local accounting firm Aspenleiter, Doran &
Eldredge. While working with the national accounting firm had been a great experience,
Bob really wanted to work more closely with small and mid-sized companies with more
exposure to the business owners. He became a partner in the firm in January 1978.
The firm was dissolved and on July 1, 1979, the new firm of Eldredge, Fox & Porretti
was created.

The firm started with the three partners, thirteen staff members and billings of approxi-
mately $1 million. The three founding partners felt that there was a significant oppor-
tunity to service and help small to mid-sized companies, a niche that larger national
firms could not provide as readily. Bob became managing partner in 2004, following the
retirements of his co-founding partners Bob Fox and John Eldredge. At that time, the
firm had two offices: the main office in Rochester and a smaller office in Canandaigua.
With Bob’s growth-oriented philosophy, which his partners accepted and supported, the
firm has grown to approximately 190 members with offices in six cities, including Jupi-
ter, FL and client billings in excess of $25 million. When Bob’s retirement buyout com-
menced in October 2013, he really was not ready for retirement. He continues to work
in the firm on a part-time basis with a select group of clients who have become his per-
sonal friends.

Bob always felt that personal success carries a responsibility to give back to the com-
munity. In that vein, he currently serves on five Boards including The Aquinas Institute
and Aquinas Foundation boards. Although he keeps himself busy with work and serving
on the aforementioned boards, he finds time to golf and during the winter spends week-
ends with the family at Holimont Ski Club in Ellicottville, NY.

FAMILY

The Foley Family

First Row L-R: Joe ’70, Robert ’43, Dan ’68. Second Row L-R: Bob ’76, Terry ’73.

Through loyalty and commitment, the Foley Family is a devoted three-generation supporter of both
Aquinas Institute and Nazareth Academy. To date, there are 18 Aquinas graduates and 5 Nazareth
graduates in the family.
Robert D. Foley ’43 (1995 Aquinas Hall of Fame inductee), is its patriarch. In 1948, after serving in
WWII, Bob married his fellow 10th Ward high school sweetheart, Madeline Cook, Naz ’42. Their sisters
also attended Nazareth Academy: Virginia Cook Denninger, Naz ’41 and Eileen Foley Cooper, Naz ’47.
Madeline’s brother Gerard and sister in-law Virginia Shaeffer Cook, Naz ’41, had 4 children: Peter AQ
’67, Mark AQ ’74, Matthew AQ ’78 and Annie Cook Moore, Naz ’70. Madeline’s brothers Bob `44 and
Jim `45 also attended Aquinas.
In the Aquinas tradition of Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge, Bob `43 taught his family the art of
hard work and dedication. A humble businessman, Bob started his own dairy business and co-owned
Foley’s Dairy and Delicatessen. Madeline and Bob had 4 sons, Dan `68, Joe `70, Terry `73 and Bobby
`76. Each attended Catholic grammar schools. Bob often told his sons that they had 3 choices for high
school: 1) Aquinas, 2) Aquinas, or 3) Aquinas. “PaPa Bob” was also an elected official as a councilman
for the Town of Greece and was a volunteer for the Barnard Fire Department.
Dan Foley AQ ’68 attended Alfred University and retired from Coca-Cola in 2018. Dan and his wife
Sherry live in Rock Hill, SC and Honduras. Their children, Brendan and Maureen studied at Catholic
University and East Carolina University, respectively.
Joe Foley, AQ ’70 followed the Basilian tradition and graduated from Windsor University. Joe owns KD
Financial Services in Rochester. Joe and his wife Laura (Bishop Kearney ’69), had two children who
attended Aquinas: Katie ’01 and Dan ’10. Katie graduated from Syracuse University and Dan from
SUNY Geneseo.
Terry Foley, AQ ’73 studied at Edinboro University and is retired from the Town of Greece. Terry mar-
ried Peggy Magee Carroll, Naz ’70. Peggy’s 3 children also attended Aquinas: Michael ’97, Dennis ’99
and Katie ’01. Michael attended Bryant & Stratton College, Dennis graduated from the Culinary Institute
of America and Katie from Monroe Community College.
Bob Foley, AQ ’76 has worked in the print industry for his entire career. Bob went to Alfred Tech and
SUNY Buffalo. Bob and his wife Linda have three children who graduated from Aquinas: Madeline ’06,
Neil ’08 and Nora ’11. Nora also attended Nazareth Jr. High School. Madeline graduated from Fredonia
State University and Nazareth College graduate school. Neil graduated from Canisius College and
Nora from Johnson and Wales University.
The entire Foley Family was very active in sports and various clubs, and remain active in fundraising
and charity events.

ATHLETICS

Paul Roland ’77

Paul F. Roland was born in Rochester on May 31, 1959, the 7th of eight children born to James
and Marie Roland. The Rolands are an Aquinas family, including Paul’s great-uncle (Austin Boeh-

me ’26), his dad (James ’43), several uncles, 2 brothers (Marty ’72 and Tom ’74), and his son
(Christopher ’06). Paul attended St. Boniface Elementary School before entering Aquinas.

During his time at Aquinas Paul earned five varsity letters (two in football and baseball and one in
golf). In his senior year he was a first team All City-Catholic League selection at quarterback, as
well as a second team All Greater Rochester selection.
In addition to the many successes in sports, Paul was able to maintain a grade point average
earning him the honor of Permanent St. Thomas Club.
After graduating from Aquinas, Paul attended Cornell University. During his four years at Cornell,
Paul played two years of lightweight football, one year of varsity football, and three years of varsity
lacrosse. With the lightweight team he played both quarterback and wide receiver. In his sopho-
more year he helped lead Cornell to only its second undefeated season since the league’s found-
ing in the 1940s. That year, he was selected to the first team all league squad as wide receiver.
Paul’s proudest athletic achievement is playing for the nationally ranked Cornell lacrosse team. He
had never seen a lacrosse game before entering college but was encouraged by his lightweight
football coach to give it a try. He made the varsity squad in his sophomore year and was playing a
regular shift at midfield by his junior season. During his time, Cornell won three Ivy League cham-
pionships and went to two NCAA tournaments. He also earned an All Ivy League honorable men-
tion in his senior year.
Paul returned to Rochester after graduation in 1981 and began a career in financial services at
Central Trust Company and then Lincoln First Bank. He attended the Simon Business School at
the University of Rochester, receiving his MBA in 1986. That same year, he went to work at QCI
Asset Management where he has been for 33 years, becoming a principal and owner. Paul has

The Aquinas Alma Mater

Thou place of rev’rie
Praise we and uphold thee

In retrospection,
We see thy intention;
Always to strive for
That which we were made for;
Aquinas evermore!

Dear A lma Mater
May you in all hours,
Be the outstanding,
Be the one commanding;
And of those striving
Be the one surviving;
Triumphant over all.

THANK YOU to the
Aquinas Institute Hall of Fame committee
