FIFTY - SIXTH ANNUAL

HAWAIIAN INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH ASSOCIATION, INC.

Presents the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament by HIBT, Inc., a non-profit corporation which was incorporated
in 1974. Its major work was to operate a fishing tournament created by six men in 1959, to assume the work and
records of the HIBT from Peter Fithian and direct attention to Kailua-Kona as a year round quality Big Fish (Marlin and
Tuna) destination. The six men were Porter Dickenson, Peter S. Fithian, Dudley C. Lewis, Richard F. MacMillan, Desmond
Stanley, Edward D. Sultan, Sr. and C.M. Cooke III joined soon after.
It later became evident that there was little or no knowledge about the life cycle of the marlin. Due to John C. Marr’s
urging, the HIBA Board founded a 501C3 Scientific Corporation and called it the Pacific Ocean Research Foundation
(PORF). Over a period of 15 years, more than 65 scientific papers were written by scientists with credit to PORF. PORF
dominated the study of science for the Pacific Blue Marlin working with Stanford University and the IGFA to further the
understanding of the life of this marlin which has had so much to do with the rise in interest for game fishing worldwide.
PORF has been involved for more than 40 years and intends to continue its efforts in the coming years. Your participation
will aid in the continuance of these efforts.

FIFTY - SIXTH ANNUAL

HAWAIIAN INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH TOURNAMENT

BILLFISH ALOHA

Message from Governor David Ige

On behalf of the people of the State of Hawai‘i, aloha and welcome to everyone gathered on the Kona Coast of the Island of
Hawai‘i for the 56th Annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT).
Since its inception by Chairman Peter Fithian and associates 56 years ago, the HIBT has prided itself in following strict
International Game Fish Association rules for world record big game fishing. Teams from all over the world, including Papua
New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Japan, China, Vanuatu, the United Kingdom and the United
States, gather to participate in this most prestigious game fishing tournament.
Mahalo to the directors, officials, staff and volunteers for your hard work and dedication in making this tournament possible
again this year and highlighting Hawai‘i as a premier location for world class big game fishing.
My best wishes for another successful tournament!
With warmest regards,

David Y. Ige
Governor, State of Hawai‘i

Mayor’s Message

On behalf of the people of the County of Hawai‘i, I wish to congratulate the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament
celebrating its 56th anniversary from August 7–15, 2015. The important contributions of this tournament to the Kona
sports fishing tradition and the overall quality of life on Hawai‘i Island over the past half century have made the Hawaiian
International Billfish Tournament an integral part of our island community.
We welcome local participants from Hawai‘i, and teams from around the world, traveling from the mainland United States,
Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Japan, China, Vanuatu and the United Kingdom to
compete. The many who return every year are a testament to the enduring quality of the Hawaiian International Billfish
Tournament.
The County of Hawai‘i applauds the organizers of this tournament for your outstanding efforts to perpetuate this highly
enjoyable and entertaining sporting event. Best wishes for another successful and enjoyable tournament
this year, and best of luck to all the competing teams.
Aloha,

Billy Kenoi, Mayor

Founder’s Message – Aloha & Welcome to Kona

It is my pleasant duty to welcome you to the 56th Annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament on behalf of all of
the volunteers who have contributed to making this happen, the anglers that have gone before and the Founders that had
the vision to create the HIBT.
To those pictured above, mahalo for your important continuing support which makes this all possible.
This contest was organized to let the world know about the beauty that surrounds very wonderful fishing grounds, then
relatively unknown to the world, and to share with fellow anglers the warmth of the citizens along the Kona Coast.
We are dedicating an evening to host a Silent Auction that is being organized under the auspices of the Pacific Ocean
Research Foundation (PORF) who has been involved in the study of the Pacific Blue Marlin for many years with the
continuous support from the HIBT. This event will be held on Friday August 7th.
We believe that the HIBT is competitive fishing in the Olympic Spirit, with Anglers based worldwide
competing for medals and honor. Please play forward accordingly. May the best team win.

Peter S. Fithian, For all of the founders 1959-2015

MISS BILLFISH 2015

Cheri Maria Sumikawa Lavoie
Cheri Maria Sumikawa Lavoie feels honored

to be Miss Billfish 2015. She is the daughter of

Phil and Naomi Lavoie and a dedicated big sister

to sixteen-year old brother Yuki. Born on Kauai

and raised in Kailua-Kona, she has been a big fan of

fishing all her life and has many friends in the industry.

Graduating from Kealakehe High School, she went on to study

dance at Santa Monica Community College and at UC Berkeley. After

her schooling, she returned to her beautiful Hawaii to pursue a

career in real estate.

Like many local fishermen, Cheri has a passion for learning and

enriching the culture and, of course, eating fish!

This past May, she competed in the Miss Hawaii pageant as the

first Miss Hualalai. She was grateful for the opportunity to confirm

her connection with the land and ocean, reminiscent of the Hawaiian

ahupua’a system. An affirmation of the ahupua‘a resources being

adequately provided for the community through the preservation,

development and maintenance of the classic - mountain to sea -

parcels of land.

Being Miss Billfish 2015 and part of the Hawaiian International

Billfish Tournament is a reconfirmation of these beliefs.

She extends a warm MAHALO and ALOHA to all that attend the

2015 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament and come to our

beautiful town of Kailua-Kona and hope you take with you many

treasured memories. Best of luck to all the teams of this multi-

cultural event! A hui hou…

2014 RICHARD BOONE AWARD

Richard Boone won fame as an actor in both films and
his television series “Have Gun Will Travel”. He took up

residence in Kailua-Kona in the late 50’s and pursued his great

interest in big game fishing on his own boat the Goodbye
Charlie. As an enthusiastic supporter and Governor of the
HIBA, he gave his time, talent, and prestige to the event and

promoted Kona’s fishing throughout his lifetime. Following

his death, the HIBA established an award in his name. The
award is to be presented annually to the top scoring skipper
based on a rating and ranking formula given by his teams on
each of the five days fishing.
