ABOUT OUR CLUBS
Jade is currently setting up fortnightly book clubs for a range of different aged
Winterwood students. It's a way of encouraging undergraduate-style seminar debate,
only of course simplified for younger students. Jade will spend two sessions on
each book, the first exploring the text's themes, general plot, and social and historical
context, and the second analysing specific passages and looking at language and
imagery. The sessions would aim to be enjoyable and to help the students prepare for
their English GCSEs.
We’ve been reading a lot of academic research recently on the importance of
extracurricular activities to long-term success, and we are keen to help our former
students as much as possible in this area. Long-term participation in extracurricular
activities has proven a more accurate prognostic of students achieving difficult goals
and completing projects than current standardised tests, particularly for academically
gifted students who otherwise do not develop as expected in this area. It's really
important to us that we help students in the long-term, rather than just helping them to
pass exams, and we have continued to work with many former students in a mentoring
capacity - something they really benefit from.
