Did you know that breakfast is the
most important meal of the day? It is true!
Doctors have learned that people who
eat breakfast have more energy during
the day. Doctors have also learned that
students who eat breakfast can pay
attention better in school.

3

Why is breakfast so important? The
word breakfast may give us some clues.
The word break fast is really two words
put together. Those words are break and
fast. The word break can mean “to stop.”
To fast means “to not eat for some time.”
Put the two meanings together. The word
break fast means “to stop fasting.”

4

We do not eat when we sleep. We
are fasting. We wake up hungry after not
eating all night long. Hunger is the way our
body lets us know it needs fuel. We fuel
our body with food. We need food to go
just like a car needs gas!

5

Some people skip breakfast. They may
be in a hurry in the morning. Most people
are in a hurry in the morning. That does
not mean they should not eat breakfast!

6

Eating a healthy breakfast is also
important. What is a healthy breakfast?
Some things that make a healthy
breakfast are foods that have protein
and fiber.

7

Many foods that we eat have protein.
Eggs, meat, and beans have protein.
Dairy products such as milk and yogurt
have protein. Protein helps to build
strong muscles.

8

Many foods that we eat also have fiber.
Cereals such as oatmeal and bran have
fiber. Fruits such as oranges, mangoes,
and cantaloupes have lots of fiber. Fiber
helps your body digest food better.

9

Here are two examples of a healthy
and delicious breakfast!

• A bowl of oatmeal with milk
A glass of orange juice

• One scrambled egg
A slice of whole wheat toast
Half a grapefruit
A glass of milk

10

11

Here are some ideas for a quick,
healthy breakfast if you are in a hurry.
• A banana and peanut butter

sandwich with milk
• A whole-grain bagel with low-fat

cream cheese
• Cottage cheese and fruit
• Dried fruit, sunflower seeds, and nuts

12

Many foods are called breakfast foods.
Some may not be the best choices for a
healthy breakfast. Foods such as frosted
cereals and doughnuts are not good
breakfast foods. These kinds of foods
are high in calories. These foods also do
not give you the energy you need for your
busy morning!

13

Now you know why breakfast is such an
important meal. Eat a healthy breakfast
every morning. Get a great and delicious
start on your day! Now, what’s for lunch?

Encourage them to include healthy foods on their menu. Help
students to include the words breakfast, lunch, and dinner on
their menus.

School-Home Connection
Healthy Challenge Have students discuss with
family members what parts of their breakfasts are healthy and
what parts may be unhealthy. What can people do to improve
