English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) Progress Map

Who are EAL/D students?

English as an additional language or dialect learners are those students who speak a language or
dialect other than Standard Australian English (SAE) as their first language and therefore require
targeted, structured and explicit
language support to develop their SAE competency.

What is the EAL/D Progress Map?

The EAL/D Progress Map is a Western Australian planning, monitoring and assessment tool that can
be used for all students requiring support in developing SAE who come from culturally and

linguistically diverse backgrounds whether arriving from
overseas or born in Australia.

The Map describes student progress across four modes -
listening, speaking, reading and viewing, and writing in
each phase of

learning. The phases of learning are

Early Childhood K- 2

Middle Childhood Yrs 3-6

Secondary Yrs 7-12
- Early Adolescence 7-10
- Late Adolescence 11/12
