Information Regarding Public Water Utility Service
For The Acreage
Acreage Residents:
Over the past several years, Palm Beach County has installed large water transmission lines
throughout the Acreage (see attached map). Property owners who live directly adjacent to the
existing water lines can connect to the County water system at any time. Service to the rest of
the District cannot be done without construction of a grid of distribution feeder lines throughout
the community.
Because of the large lots and many canals throughout the District, the cost of these distribution
lines is significant. Previous studies have estimated full coverage of The Acreage to nearly $130000
million. Without some source of outside funding (which has not yet been identified) the cost for
such lines are generally paid for by assessing groups of property owners who are willing to pay
for the lines that serve their neighborhood. A typical assessment program would pay for the
construction costs ‘up front’ and the property owner would pay for the improvements in their tax
bill financed over a 20-year period.
Whether or not an assessment program is offered, and how the assessments would be done, is
legally a decision for the Board of Supervisors of the Indian Trail Improvement District. Palm
Beach County has expressed an interest to work with Indian Trail Improvement District to define
such a program, but the ultimate decision belongs to the Indian Trail Improvement District Board
of Supervisors after taking into consideration the views and desires of the public.
Frequently Asked Questions
Public Water Connection Q&A for Residents
within the Indian Trail Improvement District
1. How can I connect to County Water?
It depends upon your home’s location relative to the pipeline. (See Map)
A. If the frontage of your property runs along pre-existing pipelines, you can connect
directly to County Water. Call 561-493-6000 and ask for Contracts Management.
B. If your property is not adjacent to the existing pipeline, please be aware that the
Indian Trail Improvement District is currently exploring opportunities to possibly
expand the availability of water to its residents. The Indian Trail Improvement
District welcomes your interest and comments on this topic and respectfully
requests that you fill out the Indian Trail Improvement District Water Interest
Form by going on line at: www.indiantrail.com.
2. How much will it cost?
The cost to connect will vary based on the length of pipelines that will need to be
installed. Financing may be available.
3. If my neighborhood wants to connect to public water and I don’t, do I still have to
pay for the pipeline?
Typically for other areas of the County, the PBC Water Utilities Department provides a
Special Assessment Program. A survey of the residents living along your road is taken
to inquire if water service is desired. If the residents vote in favor of connecting to public
water, all homeowners in the unit will be assessed for the costs of the pipeline.
However, hooking up to and receiving public water is still optional.
According to the agreement between Indian Trail and Palm Beach County regarding
public water service, Indian Trial will determine the kind of assessment program most
acceptable for providing water to residents within ITID’s area.
4. Why doesn’t my home already have the proper plumbing to connect to the
County’s water distribution system?
When The Acreage was being developed, County water wasn’t available. Homes were
designed for private, individual wells. Therefore, the underground pipelines that connect
individual homes to the main system have not yet been installed in the majority of The
Acreage.
5. I have questions regarding the current health issues in the Acreage. Who should I
call?
The Palm Beach County Health Department is investigating this health issue. Contact
the Palm Beach County Health Department at 561-840-4566 or Florida Department of
Health 1-850-245-4444 or on the web: www.pbchd.com
