CHAIRMAN’S THOUGHTS - GARY VELLA

It will be great to get back to the league this weekend, after the last two
weeks saw us exit both the FA Cup and Vase.

Whilst the FA Cup game against Coalville was something that, although we
were defeated, we could be proud of, last weeks game against Wellington
Amateurs is one we must learn from and move on from quickly.

Scott and the team will be eager to put the defeat out of their system and
what better way to do this than to put three welcome points on the board.

It will be great to pit ourselves against our league opponents once more, as
it seems like months since we did so.

SECRETARY’S THOUGHTS - PAT MURPHY

After two Saturday’s away playing FA Cup and FA Vase games we are back
to league games today.

In the fa cup we lost to a higher placed team, Coalville Town, 1-2.
We gave them a decent game and had some chances before their late
winner though.

Last Saturday we lost our Vase game at Wellington Amateurs 3-6 - not a
lot to be said about that game, the score is enough!

Our game at home vs Nuneaton Griff has been rearranged for Tuesday 9th
October, as well as our game away at NFK burbage being postponed due
to them being in the FA Cup.

KEEP THE FAITH!

VIEW FROM THE INSIDE - SCOTT EASTERLOW

It’s been a painful 7 days for us all after last weeks poor show-
ing. Everyone involved with the team is fully aware it was well
below the standards we have set.

Although it wasn’t what we have come to expect over the last
18 months, it’s important to remember it happens to every
good side now and then. One things for sure, you don’t be-
come a bad side overnight and the good performances cer-
tainly outweigh the bad, so I think we need to remember this
moving forward.

Saturday saw so many individual errors and all in one match
which is something I don’t think I have ever seen before. On
a brighter note the lads turned in a decent training session on
Tuesday and I’m sure we all be doing everything we can to get
a good result today.

AWAY TEAM - COVENTRY COPSEWOOD

The club was formed in 1922 by employees of Peel Connor, and was known as the ‘Connor’. They
played in the Coventry District League until 1926 when due to an amalgamation with Magnito Ltd,
they were renamed Magnet FC.

They continued playing under this name until 1934 when they changed again to GEC (Cov) FC.
This name stuck for longer, lasting until the 1970s when they became GPT (Coventry) FC, and then
changed again in 1999 to Marconi (Coventry) FC, and then when Marconi sold off their land, it
became Copsewood.

During its early years, the team played in the District and Works League, and had large success in the
post war years, and then again in the 1970s when they won their league’s internal cup four times,
the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup three years running and the Birmingham Junior Cup twice.

In 1993 the club applied to join the Midland Football Combination. They finished 5th in each of their
first five years in Division Two, but gained promotion due to their facilities. In the 1996–97 season
they did the double in Division One, and were promoted to the Premier Division, where they currently
play.

In the early part of the 21st century manager Paul Mills led the club to several finishes near the top of
the table, and qualification to the later stages of their cup competitions, being runners up in the Tel-
egraph Cup twice, winning the Coventry Charity Cup three times and winning the Tony Allden Cup.
Since then, with the departure of Mills, they underwent a rebuilding process and finished mid-table in
2005–06, but slipped to near the bottom of the division in 2006–07.

In 2008–09 they reached the final of the Coventry Telegraph Cup, losing to local rivals Nuneaton Griff
on penalties at the Ricoh Arena. They also had an improved finish in the Midland Combination, finish-
ing ninth. The reserve side were crowned champions of Coventry Alliance Two for 2008–09. They also
have the 3rd highest number of teams entered in the Coventry Minor league with 18 teams ranging
from u-7 to u-16.

ACADEMY NEWS

The academy started the 2018 – 2019 season campaign superbly given the tran-
sition over the summer from Stratford and all our scholars have embraced the
change with a positive start to the season.

It was great to kick start our campaign in the U19 National league last week
by beating Stratford Town 3 – 0 and most importantly putting on an excellent
display on in front of first team management which led to 3 players earning a call
up to last weekend’s FA Vase match with MJ and Riley making their debut.

The SCL college side have also got off to a flying start winning 15 – 0 against
Hednesford Town Academy on the opening day of the season this week and the
National League U19’s picking up a point away to Chase Town.

DEMIR VAVAN

There is already a great buzz around the training ground from all
the scholars with the new opportunities and development
pathways in place working with the club.

We have started the season well considering the changes made
over the summer and are looking forward to building and
progressing forward working with the club.

CLUB NEWS

The youth team were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup by
a strong Rushall Olympic side but did revel in the magic of
the cup in the previous round by beating Premier League
side Ellesmere Rangers 0-4.

The mini bus ride home was more akin to a local nightclub
such was the buzz from the boys but it was a great experi-
ence and development stride for them.

Most of the Junior sides have started now and it was great
to see the managers comments in the whatsapp groups...
So much positivity!

It was particulary nice to see the teams who have come
across to us from other clubs do so well. Ben Reeson and
his Under 8’s chalked up a good win and Steve Baker and
his U11’s have had some great exchanges in the MJPL and
had a good win in the Central Warwickshire last Sunday
beating Redditch United.
