CHAIRMAN’S THOUGHTS - GARY VELLA

Today is a huge game for the club. Atherstone are consistently challenging
year in year out and we need to show them that we are in that bracket as a
club as well today. Of course last season we had a great league double win
over them but they showed their class in the Midweek Cup final where they
dominated throughout and thoroughly deserved to lift the cup. This season
though we have been more consistent and since that first day defeat we
have picked up points where in the past we would have dropped a fair few.
The squad is more solid and we all hope today brings a great game and
result for the club, but, whatever the outcome today, we strive forward as
we have been for three years now and we will reach our goals.

A welcome back today to Martin ‘Mav’ Hutchcox who had been a Racer for
the past few seasons, as well of course as in the past for the youth team.

SECRETARY’S THOUGHTS - PAT MURPHY

Good afternoon and welcome to Hampton Road for today’s
Total Motion MFL Division One fixture against Atherstone Town. We would
like to extend a warm welcome to the officials, Atherstone players and
supporters who have made the journey and hope they enjoy the visit to
Racing Club and have a safe journey home.

After overcoming a stubborn Brocton side 3-2 with goals from Wade
Malley and two from Ben Mackey, we entertain the league leaders with
only one point between us and them, in what promises to be an exciting
encounter.

KEEP THE FAITH

VIEW FROM THE INSIDE - SCOTT EASTERLOW

Last Saturday’s win continued our good form which is a just reward for the
lads attitudes ever since we lost our first game of season.

Brocton are a very good side and picking up 3 points there shouldn’t be
under valued - today we take on top of the league Atherstone, who are a
very good side and a side who I always expected to be competing at the
top end of the table.

Not only are we winning games but what the fans don’t see is that in the
changing room there is an atmosphere easily the best I have been involved
with as a manager and a player.

It’s important to remember that our whole season doesn’t hinge on today’s
result - but I can guarantee you all we will be doing everything in our
power to get the three points today and put some smiles on the fans faces
come 4.45pm.

BEN MACKEY

Why do you play for Racing Club Warwick?

Many reasons - my local team, I’ve known the gaffer for years and I
could see that he and the chairman & all people involved with the club
were really making an effort to push the club forward. I came to watch a
few games last season and the team was already strong & liked to attack
which would suit any striker. I thought I’d never play again after having
18 months out of football but after many chats with the club and seeing
all of the above going on I am now glad I decided to give it another go!

Who is the best player you’ve played with?

I’d say Gary McAllister, He was player manager at Cov & gave me my
debut. His first touch and vision was unreal even at the end of his career
he was still running games with ease!

If you’re not in good form what can you do on the pitch to
influence things?

On the pitch.. I’d say get back to basics, as a striker I’d look to keep it
simple hold the ball up & drop it off etc then things start happen from
there...

What drives you to get up and train in the freezing cold and
rain?

Very busy comment coming here but I really believe in it... ‘Success leaves
clues’ - whenever I’ve achieved anything on or off the pitch it’s always
after a period of time of grafting and doing the not so pretty things in
life that most people wouldn’t do!

Who’s the joker in the dressing room?

JJ is a character he loves the banter.. Shame he doesn’t love tracking
back though :)

What team do you support, other than Racing of course?

Super Sky Blues!

What’s your favourite position?

Striker! Number 9 down the middle stinking of goals! #openthewindow

AWAY TEAM - ATHERSTONE

The original Atherstone Town club was formed in 1887, and after drifting between various
local leagues, settled in the Birmingham Combination in 1911, where they remained until
1954. Prior to this the Adders had gained national recognition by reaching the semi-final
of the FA Amateur Cup in both 1907 and 1909. After several decades of varying perfor-
mance, the 1947-48 season saw the Adders claim the Birmingham Combination League
and Cup double.

In 1954 they stepped up to the Birmingham and District League (later renamed the West
Midlands (Regional) League), where they were runners-up in 1972 and moved up to the
Southern League. In their first season they gained promotion to the Premier Division,
where their best position was third in 1973-74, but the club was forced into liquidation in
the summer of 1979.

A group of local enthusiasts managed to fulfill the teams’ reserve fixtures in the West
Midlands League under the name Atherstone United and then decided to continue under
that name as a new club.

In 1982 the new club won promotion to the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier
Division, followed in 1986–87 by winning the Premier Division title and promotion to the
Southern League Midland Division. Two years later they were promoted again, to the
Southern League Premier Division, where they finished as high as 4th. However, the end
of the 1999–00 season saw Atherstone relegated for the first time in either incarnation.
The situation at the club worsened and in September 2003 Atherstone United were put
into liquidation. Again a group of supporters formed a new Atherstone Town club.

In their debut season the new Atherstone Town were accepted into the Midland Combi-
nation Division One, winning the league and promotion at the first attempt along with
the President’s Cup. In the 2005–06 season, they were the champions of the Midland
Combination Premier Division and thus stepped up to the Midland Football Alliance.

Further success in 2005–06 came in the Birmingham County FA Midweek Floodlit Cup
and the Midland Combination Endsleigh Challenge Cup. In the 2007–08 season, the
club won promotion again as champions of the Midland Football Alliance, the club’s third
promotion in four seasons. The first season in the Southern League Midland Division saw
the Adders in the top three for most of the season. At the end they finished third behind
champions Leamington and near neighbours Nuneaton Town. They made the play-offs,
only to lose to Chasetown. They did however win the GX Southern League Cup for the
first time after beating Bridgwater Town in the two legged final.

Due to financial problems, the club had to resign from the Southern League mid-way
during the 2010–11 season. In 2011–12 they played in the Midland Football Alliance but
were relegated at the end of the season to the Midland Combination Premier Division.
Ivor Green took the Managers job for season 2013/14 and led the club to the 3rd Qualify-
ing Round of the F.A. Cup, losing 4-0 to Barrow at Sheepy Road.
Also that season they reached the final of The Les James Challenge Cup at The Bescot
Stadium, losing out 2-1 to Stafford Town.
Green resigned in October of the following season to be replaced by a management team
consisting of ex-players Leigh Everitt, Malc Randle and Rich Williams who led the club to
13th place in MFL Division 1.

2015/16 saw Ivor Green return to the Managers seat and Justin Palmer take over as Chair-
man of the club, after a season of rebuilding and another 13th place finish.
2016/17 saw an upturn in fortune for the club and a successful season saw the Adders
qualify for the F.A.Cup after a two year absence, with a 4th placed finish behind runaway
champions Bromsgrove Sporting.

The 2017/18 season saw Adders pick up their first pieces of silverware for ten years when
the won the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Cup, beating Racing Warwick 1-0 in the final and
The J.W.Hunt Cup with a1-0 win over Wolverhampton Sporting. A third place finish in the
league rounded off a great season for Ivor Greens’ side.

CLUB NEWS

The National League team went back to the top of the table
after a 2-1 home win against a resolute Stourbridge side on
Wednesday afternoon at Townsend Meadow. A fantastic strike
from Vladimiro Pous and the winner from Tom Harrington se-
cured the points and sees us go back above Mansfield Town and
Chasetown in the regional table.

The youth team put up a galant fight in the Joel Richards Cup at
Alvechurch on Wednesday evening taking the lead 1-0 and 2-1
but ended up on the wrong side of goal fest, losing 7-4 in the
end.

The Junior section have had some fantastic results of late and
it seems all teams are developing well. We must appreciate our
coaches who are doing a fantastic job. A special mention for the
Under 9’s who had their first win of the season beating Leaming-
ton Brakes on Saturday. Well done to Juggy, Ian and the lads and
they are here today as mascots. Enjoy the day!
