Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School
Annual Report 2007

Coogee Boys’ Preparatory School
“A Boys School Developing Independent Learners and Tomorrow’s Leader”

Since 1914, Coogee prep’s aim has been to offer a comprehensive ‘All Round’ Education for boys, in preparation for their Secondary Schooling and beyond. It is
our aim to develop the whole child, intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually, within a supportive and pastoral environment. Students are
encouraged to develop their full potential through programs(both curricula and co-curricula) that promote academic excellence, social and sporting interaction
and cultural involvement. We aim to offer an inclusive programme that gives our students every opportunity to participate in a broad array of activities in a variety
of endeavours and interests.

Our Student Welfare Policy aims to encourage all students to become self disciplined, respectful and community minded individuals, who understand the
fundamental and inherent values of family, school and community. It aims at encouraging students to become discerning in their decisions and choices, and to
know what are appropriate and inappropriate behaviours. Ultimately we hope that our students will be able to make the ‘right’ choices and the best decisions not
only for themselves, but also for others.

At CPS, we offer four internal scholarships - The William Nimmo Memorial Scholarship for the ‘Best All-Rounder’ in Year 5 (full scholarship for Year 6); The Walter
Scott South Memorial Scholarship for the ‘Best All-Rounder’ in Year 4 (full scholarship for Year 5) and two part scholarships, the Walter Scott South Memorial Part
Scholarship for the student in Years 5 and the lady Storey Memorial Part Scholarship for the student in Year 4, who gains the ‘highest percentile improvement’ in
exams and assessments from Semester 1 to Semester 2. These scholarships should provide boys with and incentive to work to the best of their ability and to strive
for excellence.

Throughout 2008, our focus will be on:-
• Differentiation in the Curriculum K-6
• Numeracy and Literacy K-6
• THRASS Literacy program throughout the School
• Instrumental and choral music K-6
• Creative and Practical Arts (drama/movement, art and chess)
• Integration of Values Education and Scripture in HSIE and PD Health
• Pastoral Care and Student Welfare
• Involvement in JSHAA and CIS Sports
• Information Technology - Laptop programme, PCs K-6
• Outfoor Education and Co-curricula activites
• Maintain a relatively low fee paying structure
• OHS and building refurbishment

Enrolments for 2008 - 2009
Throughout this year, our Administration Staff have sent application packages to families wishing to enrol their sons at Coogee Prep. through to 2013. Transition
for 2008 is nearly full and interviews for Transition 2009 will begin in Term 1 next year. I am pleased to report that the majority of the families who attended our
Open Day this year have chosen to proceed to this next stage.

Secondary Schooling
Coogee Prep. continues to foster and promote its long-standing relationship with The Scots College. Provided our students are enrolled in the College, they have
automatic entry in Year 7 (the student must be attending Coogee Prep. at the time). The Application fee for Scots is waived and the Registration fee is credited to
the first term;s fees in Year 7.

A Scholarship or Bursay (the amount is determined by the College) may also be offered to a CPS student on the basis of the results of the Colleges Scholarship
Examination.

This year, our students have chosen to attend a variety of secondary schools such as Scots College, Cranbrook, Marcellin College, Waverley College, Newington
College, Reddam House and St. Joseph’s College.

Scholarships
I would like to congratulate and commend Lewis Cooksley, who has been awarded a Scholarship to Scots College and one to Cranbrook. Lewis and his family have
decided to accept the Cranbrook Scholarship. Daniel and Thomas Bonomy, have both been awarded Scholarships to Reddam House and will be accepting these.
Congratulations to these boys on their exceptional achievements.

I have watched the progress of this year’s Transition boys and am amazed by their achievements throughout 2007. Their grasp of new and eciting concepts,
knowledge and skills have developed this year. Their confidence has grown enormously whether academically, on the sporting firld, or performing on stage in
front of an appreciative audience. I look at our outgoing Year 6 students and can still remember them as Infants boys, starting on their first day at School!

Our Year Six students have been expected to take on important Leadership roles within the School. I believe these boys have been well prepared for High School.
The reports I receive from Headmasters of Schools our Year Six attend are indeed very positive. The comment that comes to mind is that they “Coogee Prep. boys
settle in quickly to their new environment and are usually involved in every level of High School life.”

Basic Skills
In the Basic Skills test for years 3 and 5, all Coogee Prep students surpassed the state bench-marks in Numeracy and Literacy, the two areas covered.
As a School, we well exceeded the state average in all areas. This was not unexpected. On the whole, our students apply themselves to their studies and this
translates to excellence in outside state and national examinations. In the University of New South Wales Australiasian wide competitions, well over 45% of our
Primary students averaged in the Credit to High Distinction grades. Our Primary Teachers have continued to build on the excellent work of our infants Teachers
and this is evident in the boy’s results in external competitions, as well as entrance and scholarship examinations.

Year 3 Basic Skills (percentage of students in top two Bands)

University of New South Wales Testing
This testing is not complusory throughout NSW, therefore our students results cannot be measured against a state benchmark. Instead, listed below is the
percentage of students from our Primary classes who achieved 75% and above (Credit, Distinction and High Distinction) in each area tested.
Year Three
English - 23%, Writing - 58%, Spelling - 61%, Maths - 52%, Science - 64% and Computer Skills - 39%.

Debating and Speech
X Molyneux, N Barko, T Collins, A Robinson, A Sparrow, L Lyras, S Rankin, J Powell, W Scott, B Robinson, C Tait and D Moore were our debating representatives in
2007.

During the latter part of the year our debating squad participated in numerous intra and inter-school debates arguing many and varied topical subjects. To
conclude the season we sent two teams to debate in a day long gala event at St Catherine’s Girl School Waverley. Topics ranged from environmental issues,
cheating in sport, to “shouuld the youth of today be listened to!” Our boys won one out of the two debates. This is a wonderful achievement, particularly against
such tough competition from both boys and girls schools in the area.

Chess
Coogee Prep. performed well in the inter-school chess competition this year. Nine teams were fielded by our School with reasonable results overall. Our Coogee
Prep. Championship ‘B’ team won their district division and moved through to the Regionals.
During the June holidays, Tim Li, Stephen Chalkias and Logan Chan competed in the Scots College Chess Challenge. Thirty three teams competed and our boys
achieved fourth place. Congratulations!
Four CPS teams competed in the recent NSWJCL competition held at Randwick Town Hall. Our ‘A’ team, Stephen Chalkias, Tim Li and Thomas Bonomy achieved
third place and have been invited to compete in the State finals.

Miss Meek’s Wedding!
Saturday 23rd June, 2007 was an exciting day! Our Class Teacher, Miss Meek
was getting married and invited us to share in her special day.
We all waited patiently in front of the church and formed a guard of honour. We
were so excited when she pulled up in her wedding car and she looked very
beautiful in her wedding dress.
She walked through our guard of honour on her way into the church and said
hello to everyone. After the wedding we had a photo with our newly married
teacher, Mrs McNally and her husband, Mr McNally.
Thank you Mr and Mrs McNally for letting us be a part of your special day!

Some people thought that the painting was good and some people did not like it. They liked it because they
thought the patterns were good.
Other people thought that it was scary or they thought that it looked disgusting. Some people thought that it
was important and some thought it reminded them of the sea.
The colours were brown, red and dark. It gave some people nightmares!
I thought the painting looked great because I liked the sea creatures and it had one of my favourite creatures

The ocean has three layers or zones.
1. The sunlit zone, the sunlit zone gets lots of sunlight. Most animals and plants are found in this zone.
2. The twilight zone. Only a small amount of light reaches this zone. The water is very murky and only
animals that can live without light can survive here.
3. The midnight zone. The midnight zone is the biggest zone. There is no light found here and the
water is near freezing.

In spring time, in a town on a hill lived an old grandpa. He had a hobbie for growing plants. One day he
entered a competition and won first prize. All the other competitors said we’ll get you. So they decide to
play a trick on him.
They gave him an unusual tomato seed that grew quite big. It grew and grew.
It grew so big that it was large as the local police station. The police put grandpa in jail for growing a
lethal plant.
They tried everything to destroy it. They got the fire brigade to spray weed killer, it didn’t work. they called
the secret service to use a secret weapon, they didn’t; succeed either. Nothing seemed to destroy it, so they
let grandpa out of jail to see what might happen.
A caterpillar was inside the tomato a couple of seconds later the enormous caterpillar came out of the top
and ate all of the tomato. The town was safe!

On Monday a red Dragon was angry. He wanted his guards to catch a ghost and a knight for him.
The knight was in the middle of a training session with the ghost, when suddenly the dragon’s guards came
and took both of them to the dragon.
The dragon said, “ You are going to die”
The knight shouted, “never!”
Then the dragon said, “ We’ll see”.
Suddenly a huge poison pond opened up and the dragon’s guards pushed them in the pond. They were half
way down with only 2 metres left, then SPLASH!
Suddenly Lava man came and said, “You can’t beat me.”
Then he took the knight and ghost out of the pond. They all started to fight and killed the dragon and the
guards.
The knight and the ghost went back to their training.

Many people don’t take public transport. I think they should!
More people should take public transport because it helps the environment.
People should use public transport because it’s cheaper and has very comfortable seats.
It’s also good because it travels faster and it uses less pollution. It also has a place for your luggage.
The last thing is that you can sit and relax and look out the window.
I think everyone should use public transport because it will help save our environment.

Once there was a man called Grandpa. He won every vegetable competition. The other competitors got
angry.
They gave him a weird looking tomato. It looked strange but he took it and said thank you.
The tomato grew and grew until it was as big as the local police station.
Grandpa was put in jail. The police called the army to blow it up, but it didn’t work. They called the secret
aliens but they could not destroy it.
At last they let grandpa out. He went to see what it was. He said a caterpillar was inside and it popped out. It
ate the tomato. The town was safe.

During the holidays I went to the movies. I saw Transformers. I went with my friends Jack and Lachlan to
have a sleep over. But Lachlan did not sleep over. After the movie we had to pick Jack’s baby Tia up. Then
we dropped Lachlan home. After that Jack, Tia and I went home. When we got out of the car it was dripping
wet outside. Then we played on the play station. We played Simpson’s hit and run. After we decided to
trade cards. I traded Craig Gower for a Warrior!

The Year 2 Camp.
On Tuesday I went on camp to Life Adventure. It was in Kurrajong. We met at 7.15 am and went on a
coach. I liked the bus trip because it was interesting.
At camp I was in cabin 1 and my bunk buddy was Sebastian. First we had a pony ride, and then we had a
birthday cake for a boy in Year 3. Following this we went in the pool.
After lunch we flew on the mini flying fox. At night we watched Shrek 2. After this we turned on our
torches.
The next day we went on the biggest flying fox.
My favourite part of camp was the water slide. I didn’t like the flying fox. The most rewarding part was
water slide. I was scared of the Phoenix Flying fox but my friend Ben helped me. I cant wait to go again
next year.

In 1956 my grandparents left Germany because Europe was bombed in the war. Millions of people died, and
homes, roads and buildings were destroyed. They took the Titanic to Melbourne! Grandad almost fell off the
ship. Some one was even crazy enough to jump off! When they arrived one person ran off the edge and fell
in the sea. It took a week to find a house to buy. The only house they could find was $5000, it was owned by
a crazy woman. She had 30 cats. The lady died from old age so they burned her. She rose from the dead and
sold the house to my Grandparents. Then she died again.

Queensland.
Queensland is a part of Australia. It is in the East and North of Australia. There are birds there. It is a great
place in Australia!

My Great Grandfather’s pocket watch.
A long time ago my great grandfather had a pocket watch. He used it when he was in the bush. He would put it
on his shirt across his chest, so he could lift the clock and look at the time.
Then he gave it to my grandfather who was in Greece. This helped him with his work. They had to put
shoes on donkeys and horses. My Grandfather left Greece and went to Australia to get a better job.

Once upon a time lived a mouse and a dog. They were sitting in the shade of a tree. Then a guard came and
gave them a Pepsi for a drink.
The dog asked the mouse if she wanted to go for a swim so they did. The guard watched them while they
swam in the pool.
Then the mouse said, “let’s go sailing”
The dog said, “yes let’s go sailing.”
They took the fishing rod with them.
A shark followed them. The guard followed also.
The shark attacked the boat, the mouse shot him in the mouth, it swam away, but it got more sharks to
come. All of the sharks attacked.
The guard shot all of the sharks.
He shouted “Let’s put on the speed, go to the engine room.”
So they zoomed all the way back home.

Coral Reefs
Coral Reefs are found in and around the tropical waters.
There are three kinds of reefs. They are called Barrier, Atoll and Fringing.
A Barrier reef means that the reef is separating the land from the water. Atoll means that a volcano was once
high and it sank down slowly and it evolved into a ring of coral. A Fringing reef means that the reef is close
to the land.
Little polyps build a reef by new coral growing on top of dead coral.
A polyp builds a reef, it has stinging tentacles on its body.

Today I learnt a lot about different types of transport. I learnt that a steering wheel is on the left in a
Ranchero. In 4WD’s you have lots of things like a GPS and a radio. In police rescue trucks they carry so
many things. A scooter can come in any colour.
It was lots of fun to see these vehicles.
William Regan

I went on camp to Life Adventure. It was in Kurrajong.
We met at 7.15 and got on a coach. I watched toy story on the bus trip. I liked the trip because of the movie.
At camp I was in cabin 3 and my bunk buddy was Mackenzie.
First we went pony riding. Following this we went on the water slide.
After lunch we went on the low ropes course. At night we had chicken snitzel.
The next day we built rafts and went on the flying fox.
My favourite part of camp was the waterslide. I liked everything.
The most rewarding part was the flying fox. I can’t wait to go back again.

COOGEE PREPARATORY SCHOOL 2007

I love Australian beaches with the golden sand that lies near the dark blue water, which has lots of beautiful
sea animals. There are dolphins and very big whales.
I love the wet rainforests that have big puddles on the ground, with lots of nice birds that chat to other birds.
I like the cities where skyscrapers reach in the beautiful blue sky where lots of nice birds fly.

On Tuesday the 26th of February I went to Life Adventure. It was in Kurrajong. We met at 7.15am and got
on a coach. I had fun on the bus because I got to watch toy story.
At camp I was in Cabin three and my bunk buddy was Mac. First we fed the sheep and the ponies, then we
fed the other animals.
After lunch we did a ropes course. At night we played Camelot.
The next day we went on the flying fox and built a boat. Everything was fun. My favourite part of the camp
was the flying fox and the mini boat. I didn’t like packing my bag. I cant wait to go again to camp and go on
the flying fox and the water slide.

In 1842, on a hot summers day, there lived a cute Chihuahua , a cheeky monkey and a bear. These three
animals lived in Australia but their cruel, cruel owners shipped them to Africa.
The Africans were very, very skinny in fact they were so skinny you could see their ribs. Anyway the
Africans were even more cruel then their previous owners. The Africans were going to eat the animals.
The animals thought, “We’ve got to get out of this place.” So they did, but there was a severe problem.
There were too many Africans but somehow they managed!
The Chihuahua and the bear used their claws to scratch and stab and the cheeky monkey threw vultures at
them.
The Africans called others by shouting. A few seconds later, the animals were trapped. They couldn’t think
of a solution!
Wham! There appeared a great warrior, with a great big stick. He punched and whacked and a few seconds
later they had all escaped. The Africans lay dead on the ground.
The animals lived happily ever after and the great warrior was a great owner.
Jack Gordon.

I remember my first day of school. It was really sunny. The day started when we went up to the art area. I
drew a picture of myself. It was really hard to draw.
The first person I met was Mackenzie. I told him a joke and it was very funny. Then I met Miss Meek. She
was very nice. After that I saw my brother’s teacher, Mrs Smith. She was really nice too.
A few minutes later we did some PE. I really enjoyed being at school.

What we need in the world.
I think we need more water and food. If we do not have any water we couldn’t survive and if we didn’t have
any food we would be skin and bones.
I think we need more care and love because if we had no care and love we would be angry at each other.
That is why we need more love and care.
Harrison Moore.

Public Transport.
People do not use Public Transport. I think people should use public transport.
More people should use public transport because it creates less pollution than cars on the road.
When you’re on a ferry the seats are very comfortable and cool. On the bus you can sit and relax and look out
the window.
Public transport carries more people then cars.

I think people should use public transport.

Amelia Mary Earhart

Amelia Earhart was born on 24th July 1897.Her birthplace was Atchison Kansas.
She was married on 7th February 1931 to George Putnam. She died on the 2nd July 1937 when she disappeared
in a plane crash from Lae New Guinea to Howland Islands.
The United States Government spent $4 million dollars looking for Amelia after her disappearance which made
it the most costly search in history at the time.
Amelia was the 16th woman to receive a pilot’s licence from the FAI.
Amelia saw her first plane when she was 10 years old,she was not impressed, she said it looked like a thing of
rusty wire and wood,10 years later Amelia became interested in aviation.
On the 23rd December 1920 pilot Frank Hawks gave her a ride that would forever change her life, she knew she
wanted to fly after that.
Pilot Neta Shook taught Amelia Earhart how to fly after she graduated from Hyde Park high school in 1915,she
worked as a nurses aid in a military hospital in Canada during WWI.
Amelia took her first flying lesson on the 3rd January 1921.In six months she saved up enough money to buy
her own plane, she named it Canary, she used it to set her first womens record by reaching an altitude of
14,000 feet.
On the 11th January 1935,she became the first to fly solo across the Pacific from Honolulu to Oakland
California.
In 1937,Amelia decided she wanted to be the first woman to fly around the world.
At 12.30pm on the 2nd July she flew into rain and cloud, this made tracking impossible.Amelia called the Chief
radioman and asked for Itasca’s location. She failed to report the next scheduled time.Fuel was running low
and she was unable to be reached by radio. At 8.45 Amelia made her last report, nothing further was heard
after that.
A rescue attempt was started immediately but called off soon after
In 1938 a lighthouse was built in her memory.

SOCCER BY DEAN PSIHOYOS

I am nuts about playing soccer. It’s all I think about and do.
My dream is to play for Manchester United and my favourite
player is Cristiano Ronaldo. I really wanted my Dad to buy
me a cool soccer videogame called FIFA 08. I nagged and
nagged and nagged him until one day he suddenly surprised
me with it. THIS IS WHERE THE STORY BEGINS….

One night I was playing FIFA 08 during a storm. I could hear
the heavy rain on the roof, the wind blowing and the thunder
roaring. I was being Manchester United and I was losing 1-0
to Liverpool. I noticed that I had left the window open, so I
went to close it, but suddenly lightning struck me and I could
feel a shock right through my body. I fell to the ground, and
when I got up again I realised that I was standing on green
grass. I looked at my shirt and it was the red and white
Manchester United jersey and I heard a crowd roaring. I
looked around and I saw Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney
and Ryan Giggs. I was in FIFA 08 and I was playing in the
English Premier League.

Suddenly the coach started screaming instructions at me. I
started playing. I didn’t really know what I was doing, and I
accidently scored an own goal. Now the score was 2-0 to
Liverpool. I was being criticised by all my team mates and I
thought to myself that I had to get my head in the game.
Cristiano Ronaldo got the ball off the kick off and ran to the
right corner. Then he crossed to Wayne Rooney and he
headed the ball. GOAL!!!

Liverpool took their kick off and they ran with the ball. Ryan Liverpool ran with the ball. I tackled Harry Kewell and I ran
Giggs tackled their player and he ran and passed to Cristiano with the ball all the way to the other box. I tried to shoot but
Ronaldo who shot the ball right into the back of the net. the other player slide tackled me, but there was no penalty.
GOAL!!! It was 2-2 and there were 15 minutes to go. Then the goalkeeper saved the ball. I was furious. The
goalkeeper kicked the ball. I got it. 10 seconds left. I didn’t
want to go to extra time because on TV Liverpool always
won extra time mainly because they had Harry Kewell. I ran,
9, I did a one two with Cristiano Ronaldo, 7, I kept running,
6, 5, 4, I ran into the penalty area, 2, I get slide tackled,1,
the referee blew his whistle, 0. I sighed sadly and sat down
on the grass. Then the referee put the ball on the penalty
spot. I stood up again. The referee blew his whistle because
of the penalty. I went to the ball. I shot, the ball went into
the top corner. GOAL!!!! Manchester United won 3-2. I ran
around everywhere, waved my shirt around and threw it into
the crowd. The crowd was roaring so loudly that I fainted.

When I woke up I was in the videogame room. I told my
family about what happened, but they didn’t believe me.
When they went out of the videogame room, Cristiano
Ronaldo was on the screen and then he winked at me. This
meant that it was true. Suddenly lightning zapped me again.

KAKADU NATIONAL PARK

Kakadu National Park is located in the Northern Territory of Australia, just 257kms from Darwin. It
covers almost 20,000 square kilometers of land and is world heritage listed. It is an Australian icon
and is known for containing some of the best Aboriginal rock Art.
The South Alligator River houses an amazing array of birds and wildlife.Depending on the season
you may see crocodiles, wallabies, dingos and goannas. It is home to around 275 species of
birds,75 species of reptiles, and 25 species of frogs,100,000 species of insects,1,600 plant species
and about 60 mammal species & marsupials have been recorded in the park.
The name “KAKADU” comes from “GAGUDJU” which is the name of an Aboriginal language
spoken in the northern part of the park.
Kakadu National Park is the size of Israel, about one third the size of Tasmania, and nearly half the
size of Switzerland.
Aboriginal people have occupied the Kakadu area for at least 40,000 years.
The Chinese, the Malays and Portuguese all claim to have been the first non Aboriginal explorers
of Australia’s North Coast.
Water buffaloes had a big influence on the Kakadu region as well.By the 1880’s the number of
Buffaloes had increased to such an extent that harvesting of hides and horns was economically
viable.
After World War II,dingo shooting, brumby shooting and crocodile shooting, tourism and forestry
began. In 1953,it was converted into a safari camp for tourists.
In 1953,uranium was discovered along the South Alligator River.
Thirteen small uranium mines operated in the following decade and in the 1970’s large uranium
deposits were discovered at Ranger,Jabiluka and Koongarra.
Kakadu national park is a major tourist attraction in Australia’s North.Visitation in 2005 was
202,000.
There are many beautiful waterfalls to see such as Twin falls and Jim Jim Falls.
Kakadu National Park has some of the best examples of Aboriginal Rock Art in Australia.

The Climate:
Kakadu is located in the tropics between 12 degrees & 14 degrees south of the equator. The
climate is monsoonal, and has 2 main seasons, dry season and rain season. The “build up”
describes the transition between the dry and the rain.
During the dry season from April/May to September dry southerly and easterly trade winds are
present.Humidity is relatively low and rain is unusual.
At Jabiru, the average maximum temperature for June/July is 32 degrees.
Build up storms are impressive and lightning strikes are frequent,in fact the top end of Australia
records more lightning strikes per year than any other place on Earth.
At Jabiru, the average maximum temperature for October is 37.5 degrees.

Kakadu National park is a very large National Park,it is an amazing National park to me and a
place that I would love to visit one day.

My favourite sporting moment in year 5

My favourie moment in year 5 is, Against St Pius X when we beat them 84
to naught and I scored about 4 tries.
It was the best part of the rugby season this year and we all played as a team
and we wouldn’t have won without the help of our coach Mr. Foss!
It was a great game we had finally made our team differences our teams
common factors.
It was a raining day and the ball was slippery and to score 84 points is a
great victory for us and the school the captain was Monty Tait.
Overall we had fun and it was my favourite sporting moment in year 5 and

our teams highlight of the year.
