FAST TIMES
AT ROOSEVELT HIGH
Wendy Guzman, ExecutiveEditor What moviewould
you relateto your
I love high school movies. Anything where the plot centers around
high school, I love it. A lot. But actually going to high school was a bit of high school
a different story. My parents didn?t even go to school in this country so experience?
the only background I really had came from what I saw in those
movies. Just like Cher, I was Clueless! So clueless, I still dress like the
characters in the movie (unironically) from time to time.
The moment I walked into Roosevelt High School for the very first
time I was probably humming ?I Want You to Want Me?by Letters to
Cleo from 10 ThingsI HateAbout You as I strutted down the long
yellow toned hallway.
I was a transfer from another district and had been surrounded by
completely different people the past ten years of my life. I felt like I was
on display, like I was being flaunted to the class as a new breed of
creature like Cady Heron in Mean Girlson her first day at school in
America after living in Africa for 12 years.
I wondered what type of person I was going to be. A jock, prep,
outcast, the prom queen, or the valedictorian, the possibilities were
endless. I could really be anything. My journey could be compared to
the array of Molly Ringwald archetypes.
In the beginning, I felt the most alone, like Samantha from Sixteen
Candles, I just wanted someone to care about me. In high school all
anyone wants is to be acknowledged, and sometimes you don?t even
get that.
I even felt like Pretty in Pink?s Andie. I felt like an outcast looking in
and wanting so badly to be like someone that was ?worth?so much
more than me. Although it was scary I took a lot of risks and became
friends with amazing people that past me would have considered out
of my league.
I also had days of self reflection, where my princess Claire from The
Breakfast Club ego had to be brought back down to Earth and figure
out what was really important. After finding my place I had to make
sure to not forget where I came from and understand we are all people.
As high school has gone on I questioned myself a lot. Did I decide to
be involved and in charge of a bunch of clubs so I could be some kind
of ?Queen Bee??Was I happy to be on homecoming court just because
that?s the climax to every film? Were all these decisions because I truly
wanted to do them, or because I wanted to feel like I myself was the
star of my own John Hughes classic?Honestly, I don?t know. But hey,
they made me happy.
As I prepare to leave the halls of RHSbehind I think of all the scenes
where characters have to say goodbye. In Charlie?s last letter in The
Perksof Beinga Wallflower he speaks of how everything in high school
will soon become a memory. One day all of us will be just like any
other functioning member in society, and the people we were in high
school will become irrelevant. Some people think that because of this
it doesn?t matter what happens in high school.
?But right now these moments are not stories. This is happening,?
Charlie said.
I suppose it doesn?t. However, I don?t think that means you should
cheat yourself out of your own happiness. Do what you love. If you
want to be a movie, feel free to be one.
Ironically enough, I kind of hate most movies (I get bored very
easily). I think my love for high school movies comes from their sense
of comfort. They helped me not feel scared. High school flicks were
something I could relate to, and something that made me feel like I
wasn?t alone. In the upcoming days my high school flicks will probably
turn into college movies, and maybe even normal adult movies one
day (definitely just romcoms).
Sure, in real life there aren?t always happy endings, but there?s
nothing wrong with striving for one.
