57 HEALTHY EATING HABITS Eat less meat. In your diet reduce the frequency and the serving size of red meat portions. Try not eat meat more than once a day, preferably less often. Whenever you are going to eat meat, try to select lean cuts and remove all visible fat before eating. Grill the meat rather than fry. Add more poultry and fish to your meal. Avoid sausage, frankfurters, bologna and other processed meats because they are usually high in fat. Reduce severely the amount the cream, butter, cream cheese and ice cream that you consume. Choose semi skimmed milk or pour off the cream before having it. Eat only those dairy product which have low fat such as skimmed milk, cottage cheese and yogurt. Use soft margarines that are high in polyunsaturated. Restrict the number of eggs to no more than three per week. Avoid more consumption of commercial biscuits and cakes because these are made with hard fats. As the cooking oil, use only the recommended oils such as corn, soya or olive. For the sake of your teeth, reduce intake of heavily sweetened foods such as sweets and biscuits. Eat some fresh fruits every day. And if possible eat fruits at or after every meal. Eat more vegetables, particularly peas and beans-fresh or dried-because they are very good low -fat source of protein. Eat wholemeal bread as your staple food. Eat wholemeal breakfast cereals. Take extra bran if the rest of your daily diet is rather refined.

60 Lampiran 10 TIPS FOR EXAM SUCCESS 1. Select a productive study location. Choose an area free from distraction (roommates, television, computer) Suggestions: study lounge, student center, coffee shop 2. Prepare in advance Use a day planner and designate specific times to accomplish specific tasks Avoid ‘cramming’ 3. Analyze your old exam results. Consider what types of questions you missed (multiple choice, short answer, matching, etc) Where did the exam questions come from (textbook, lecture, study aid). 4. Decide on and adopt the study strategies that work best for you Keep in mind that different types of exam/classes will require you to use different study strategies. 5. Practice what will be required of you on the exam If your exam is problem based, work on problems (it does little good to just your math book). If your exam is all essay is all essay, spend some time considering what topics will likely covered and make a brief outline. 6. Stay relaxed and confident Remind yourself that you are well-prepared and are going to do well. Choose a good spot to take the exam (enough room to work, away from any distraction). Use the first paragraph to provide an overview of your essay. Use the rest of your essay to discuss supporting points in detail. Back your points up with specific information and examples from readings and lecture. 9. Leave time to review your exam Make sure you have answered all of the questions. Proofread your writing for spelling, grammar and punctuation. Check your math answers for careless mistakes. 10. Reward yourself after the exam Take some time to do something you like to do (read a magazine, exercise, see a movie)


61 Once the exam is over, do not dwell on past mistakes or immediately start studying for your next exam. 5 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY “Oh God, tomorrow is exam! Will I remember what I have studied?” Now, don’t fear friend. You can remember what you study. 1. Study with short breaks Take short breaks while studying. Do not study continuously for more than 30 to 45 minutes. Give a break of five to ten minutes in between two sessions. Such short breaks give rest to your brain and help it to reinforce what you are learning. This will make it easy for you to understand more and remember better. Do not read any new information during these short breaks. Just relax or walk around. 2. Explain to yourself Explain what you study to yourself. Pretend you are both the student and the teacher, and try to explain the chapter or study topic to yourself. This kind of ‘explaining’ automatically helps you to learn the subject in detail. Hence you will remember it clearly. 3. Discuss Discuss important study topics with a willing classmate. Holding such discussion will jog your memory. This is like another form of revision. Also, you will become aware of important points about those study topics. This will help both you and your classmate to learn more and remember more. 4. Sleep well Yes, sleep cosily. Good sleep is essential for good memory. Recent research has shown that lack of sufficient sleep interferes with memory function. Because during sleep and rest period, our brain processes and consolidates information which it records during the day. So do not skip sleep; especially during the exam days. Sleep for at least six hours. Eight hours is best. 5. Eat Well Now what has eating got to do with remembering more? Simple. What we eat affects our brain’s performance. Poor nutrition leads to learning and memory problems. So make sure you include nutrient-rich food items like--whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and milk in your diet. This will keep your brain healthy and happy. The above five remedies are easy to follow. They definitely help to strengthen your memory and achieve more success in your studies.

67 Lampiran LOVE YOU, DAD by I love my DAD on Friday, January 1, 2010 at 8:42am ·... I met a man who came to Tampa for his father's funeral. Father and son hadn't seen each other in years. In fact, according to the son, his father had left when he was a boy, and they had had little contact until about a year ago, when his father had sent him a birthday card with a note saying he'd like to see his son again. After discussing a trip to Florida with his wife and children and consulting his busy schedule at his office, the son tentatively set a date to visit his father two months later. He would drive his family down when school was out for vacation. He scribbled a note and with mixed emotions, dropped it in the mail. He heard back immediately. Written on lined paper torn from a spiral notebook, such as a schoolboy would use, were words of excitement penned in a barely legible scrawl. Misspelled words, poor grammar and incorrect punctuation bounced off the page. The man was embarrassed for his father. He thought twice about the upcoming visit. It just so happened that the man's daughter made the cheerleading squad at her school and had to go to a camp conducted for cheering techniques. Coincidentally, it started the week after school was out. The trip to Florida would have to be postponed. His father said he understood, but the son didn't hear from him again for some time. A note here or there, an occasional call. They didn't say much—muttered sentences, comments about "your mother," a couple of clouded stories about the man's childhood—but it was enough to put together a few of the missing pieces. In November the son received a call from his father's neighbor. His father had been taken to the hospital with heart problems. The son spoke with the charge nurse, who assured him his father was doing well following a heart attack. The doctor could provide details. His father said, "I'm fine. You don't have to make a trip out here. The doctor says there was minor damage, and I can go home day after tomorrow." He called his father every few days after that. They chatted and laughed and talked about getting together "soon." He sent money for Christmas. His father sent small gifts for his children and a pen and pencil set for his son. It was a cheap set, probably purchased at a discount pharmacy or variety-type store, and the kids tossed their tokens from Grandpa aside without much notice. But his wife received a precious music box made of crystal. Overwhelmed, she expressed her gratitude to the old man when they called him on Christmas Day. "It was my mother's," the old man explained. "I wanted you to have it."


68 The man's wife told her husband that they should have invited the old man for the holidays. As an excuse for not having done so, she added, "But it probably would be too cold for him here, anyway." In February, the man decided to visit his father. As luck would have it, however, his boss's wife had to have an operation, and the man had to fill in and work a few extra hours. He called his father to tell him he'd probably get to Florida in March or April. I met the man on Friday. He had finally come to Tampa. He was here to bury his father. He was waiting when I arrived to open the door that morning. He sat in the chapel next to his father's body, which had been dressed in a handsome, new, navy blue pinstriped suit and laid out in a dark blue metal casket. "Going Home" was scripted inside the lid. I offered the man a glass of water. He cried. I put my arm around his shoulder and he collapsed in my arms, sobbing. "I should have come sooner. He shouldn't have had to die alone." We sat together until late afternoon. He asked if I had something else to do that day. I told him no. I didn't choose the act, but I knew it was kind. No one else came to honour the life of the man's father, not even the neighbour he spoke of. It cost nothing but a few hours of my time. I told him I was a student, that I wanted to be a professional golfer, and that my parents owned the funeral home. He was an attorney and lived in Denver. He plays golf whenever he can. He told me about his father. That night, I asked my dad to play golf with me the next day. 75 Lampiran DINING MANNERS 1. Don't chew with your mouth open. It's an obvious rule, but one that's easy to forget when you're enjoying a delicious meal. 2. Say "excuse me" whenever you need to leave the table 3. Ask for someone to pass you a dish or a seasoning. Never reach across a dish or someone else's plate to reach something; instead, politely ask the person sitting next to you to "please pass the sauce." 4. Don't put your elbows on the table when you're eating. It's an old standby to admonish people for putting elbows on the table during a meal. If the meal has yet to begin or is over, however, putting your elbows on the table is acceptable. 5. Know how to manage informal and formal place settings. One of the most intimidating parts about dining can be not knowing which utensils or plates to use. Here's a quick primer: a. If you forget the particulars, remember: "work from the outside in." This basically means that if there are utensils on both the right and left sides of the plate, you'll start with what's furthest right and furthest left, and gradually work closer to the plate. b. If all else fails, just watch what everyone else is doing. c. or an informal place setting, you should have a dinner plate in the center. i. Immediately to the left of the plate will be two forks -- the one closest to the plate is the "dinner fork," to be used for the main course; the one furthest from the plate is meant for a salad or appetizer. ii. A dinner knife will be directly to the right of the plate, with the blade facing toward it; next to that will be two spoons. The soup spoon is furthest to the right; the dessert spoon (or teaspoon) is between the soup spoon and the knife. iii. Your glass should be positioned directly above the dinner knife. Subsequent glasses should be placed to the right. iv. You might have a small salad plate to the left of the forks. v. You might have a small bread plate to the upper-left of the dinner plate, with a small butter knife. Use the butter knife to take a pat of butter and put it on your plate; then use the knife to spread "your" butter onto the bread. vi. A dessert spoon or fork might be placed horizontally above the dinner plate. vii. A cup and saucer (if you're drinking coffee or tea) should be placed just above and to the right of the knife and spoons.


76 d. Know how to manage a formal place setting. A formal place setting should be mostly similar to an informal place setting, with a few key exceptions: i. You might have a small fish fork between the dinner fork and the plate, if a fish course is being served. ii. You might have a fish knife between the dinner knife and the soup soon, if you require one for a fish course. iii. You might have a small oyster fork on the far right side of the utensils to the right of the plate, if you'll be eating an oyster course. iv. Glasses are placed according to type in a formal place setting. The one directly above your dinner knife is your water glass; to the right of that is a red or white wine glass, and then a sherry glass to the far right. 6. Hold your utensils. How you hold your utensils probably depends on where you come from. Both are perfectly appropriate. In general, there are two styles: a. American style: If you're cutting food, you'll transfer the fork to your nondominant hand and put the knife in your dominant hand. After the food is cut, you'll lay down the blade of the knife on the edge of the plate, and switch the fork back to your dominant hand to move the food to your mouth. b. Continental style: The fork remains in the left hand, while you use the right hand to hold the knife and cut your food. Once you're done cutting, you might lay the blade of the knife on the edge of the plate, or just keep the knife in your hand. 7. Know how to rest your utensils. How you put your utensils on your plate communicates to the service staff whether you're finished eating or you still plan to continue. For the purpose of these instructions, imagine the dinner plate like it's the face of a clock. a. If you're finished eating, lay your fork and knife side-by side so that the prongs and blade are slightly above the center of the plate, and so that the handles are pointing between 3 and 4 o'clock. b. If you plan to continue eating, lay down your fork and knife so that the prongs and blade are near the center, with the handle of one utensil pointing at 8 o'clock and the handle of the other pointing at 4 o'clock.

Choose an area free from distraction (roommates, television, computer) Suggestions: study lounge, student center, coffee shop 12. Prepare in advance Use a day planner and designate specific times to accomplish specific tasks Avoid ‘cramming’ 13. Analyze your old exam results. Consider what types of questions you missed (multiple choice, short answer, matching, etc) Where did the exam questions come from (textbook, lecture, study aid). 14. Decide on and adopt the study strategies that work best for you Keep in mind that different types of exam/classes will require you to use different study strategies. 15. Practice what will be required of you on the exam If your exam is problem based, work on problems (it does little good to just your math book). If your exam is all essay is all essay, spend some time considering what topics will likely covered and make a brief outline. 16. Stay relaxed and confident Remind yourself that you are well-prepared and are going to do well. Choose a good spot to take the exam (enough room to work, away from any distraction). Use the first paragraph to provide an overview of your essay. Use the rest of your essay to discuss supporting points in detail. Back your points up with specific information and examples from readings and lecture. 19. Leave time to review your exam Make sure you have answered all of the questions. Proofread your writing for spelling, grammar and punctuation. Check your math answers for careless mistakes. 20. Reward yourself after the exam


84 Take some time to do something you like to do (read a magazine, exercise, see a movie) Once the exam is over, do not dwell on past mistakes or immediately start studying for your next exam. 5 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY “Oh God, tomorrow is exam! Will I remember what I have studied?” Now, don’t fear friend. You can remember what you study. 1. Study with short breaks Take short breaks while studying. Do not study continuously for more than 30 to 45 minutes. Give a break of five to ten minutes in between two sessions. Such short breaks give rest to your brain and help it to reinforce what you are learning. This will make it easy for you to understand more and remember better. Do not read any new information during these short breaks. Just relax or walk around. 2. Explain to yourself Explain what you study to yourself. Pretend you are both the student and the teacher, and try to explain the chapter or study topic to yourself. This kind of ‘explaining’ automatically helps you to learn the subject in detail. Hence you will remember it clearly. 3. Discuss Discuss important study topics with a willing classmate. Holding such discussion will jog your memory. This is like another form of revision. Also, you will become aware of important points about those study topics. This will help both you and your classmate to learn more and remember more. 4. Sleep well Yes, sleep cosily. Good sleep is essential for good memory. Recent research has shown that lack of sufficient sleep interferes with memory function. Because during sleep and rest period, our brain processes and consolidates information which it records during the day. So do not skip sleep; especially during the exam days. Sleep for at least six hours. Eight hours is best. 5. Eat Well Now what has eating got to do with remembering more? Simple. What we eat affects our brain’s performance. Poor nutrition leads to learning and memory problems. So make sure you include nutrient-rich food items like--whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and milk in your diet. This will keep your brain healthy and happy.
