As we approach the Christmas break, it is important that we stop a while
to reflect on all that has happened and the many things that we should
be grateful for this term. As a staff we appreciate all the continued
support from our parents and wider community and also the efforts of
our fantastic students.
The term has been a particularly busy one, which has seen our staff and students throw themselves
not only into the hard work of day to day education, but also into their wholehearted buy-in to our
desire to give back. The number of charity events and community engagement opportunities
continue to escalate and without exception our students are rightly lauded by all that come into
contact with them. The remaining days of this term will see further efforts in supporting our ASPIRE
charities; Leeds United Foundation, St Gemma’s and Leeds Irish Health and Homes. With carol
singing, seasonal collections and the annual Senior Citizens’ Christmas party, it promises to be a
busy but valuable end to the year, one in which we continue to be humbled by, and proud of, our
combined efforts.
This term sees us say farewell to Mr West as he takes up a new post at Spen Valley Academy, but
with every departure there follows the warm welcomes to new colleagues. Mrs Willis will continue
delivering within the Science department, providing continuity, excellence and wholehearted
commitment. January will also mark the arrival of Mr Bourke who joins us as Year Leader for Year 7.
He has already spent a short time with staff and students and is excited about the opportunity to
lead this year group and work alongside excellent colleagues.
Another milestone for Mount St Mary’s is the arrival of our final report from Ofsted following their
visit to us on 9th and 10th October. The report has been made available and whilst the new report
format does not contain the detail of previous reports, what is extremely satisfying is that we have,
as a community, been recognised as “Good” in all areas. Whilst as ever there are areas for us to
focus on moving forward, we believe these are already integrated in the work we undertake. Most
important for us are the many positive comments made about the ethos of the school, the
aspirations and high expectations we hold for all our students and the exemplary manners and
conduct of our young people. The passion for Mount St Mary’s and all our work was palpable
throughout the inspection and, as we know, is not something any of the community switch on for
the benefit of visitors, we live our ethos every day and it is heart-warming to have this recognised.
We look forward to our continued journey of improvement and high-quality provision and thank
you whole heartedly for supporting us in this.
We remember all those facing challenges as we approach the feast of Christmas and know that our
motto of “Quid Retribuam” will continue beyond our doors this holiday time. On behalf of all the
staff we wish you a restful, safe and enjoyable Christmas and look forward to welcoming everyone
back on Monday 6th January 2020.
Kindest regards
Mark Cooper Our Mission

Welcome Mass
Year 7 started the year with a Welcome Mass,
that saw our school hall full to the maximum
with student’s and their families.
This was a great event that celebrated the start
of each student’s journey here at Mount St
Mary’s. The theme of the night was ‘Dare to
Dream’ and we want all our Year 7 students to
follow their dreams, no matter how big they
are! At the end of Year 11 we have a Leavers’
mass at Leeds Cathedral and at this point their
dreams should start to become a reality.

Fifteen of our Year 7 students started
a year long collaboration with the Junior

They are aiming to develop ideas to invent

Year 9 Rugby Success!
On 6th November 13 Year 9 students went to the Leeds Rhinos training ground to take part in the Leeds and
Hunslet schools plate competition, where they played against Cockburn School, Leeds West Academy, Allerton
Grange and Brigshaw High.
As Captain Bobby Hartley led them out to begin their first game it was apparent they were “In it to win it”,
starting with a try in the opening seconds from the MSM team. Throughout the tournament the students
demonstrated some fantastic skills and impeccable attitude which led them to victory on every occasion. During
difficult games the students realised that the other schools could not contend with their powerful runners and
very quickly adjusted their game plan, breaking through their defences, creating space for a second line of
attack.
We left the tournament as overall and unbeaten winners due to the team’s outstanding attitude and dedication
to each other both on and off the pitch.

Trinity Careers Trip
Some of our most promising students went along to a careers day held at the Trinity shopping centre.
Whilst having a tour of the site, students learnt a great deal about how many different jobs, companies and
effort goes into the running of a business. We then took part in several workshops run by leading business
people who are experts in their fields. It was a very informative and inspirational day that has given our students
some big aspirations for the future.

ITV Script Writing Workshop
On Friday 22nd November Mrs Rudge and Miss Hetherington took 16 students to ITV to participate in a
screenwriting workshop. They worked with the senior script Editor and Producer on creating a series of scenes
for the characters of 'Emmerdale'. They worked on storylines and scripted scenes with the script editors from
the show and were able to tour the 'Emmerdale' set, including the famous Woolpack pub.
The highlight of the afternoon was when three of the show's actors came into the workshop and acted out the
scenes the students created for their characters. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to see the
diverse career pathways available at ITV as well as a chance to brush shoulders with the soap's stars. Feedback
from the actors and the crew were that the students are a credit to our school and their parents/carers' for their
creativity and approach to the activities usually aimed at much older students.
Year 8 Kingswood Valley Residential
Just before October half-term, 37 Year 8 students along with Mr West, Miss Finucane and Mr Woodley,
visited the Kingswood Dearne Valley centre for a two-night Risk & Resilience residential. It was a very
successful experience and both students and staff enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
There was a wide range of challenging activities ranging from archery to abseiling. The ‘Scrapheap
Challenge’ involved students using their initiative, teamwork – and a whole lot of rubbish – to build
the most effective ‘Shuttle’ that aimed to protect a loaded water bomb from exploding after being
thrown from the roof of the centre. Only one of the bombs survived which meant selected students
were then allowed to throw it, and the remaining water, at Mr West!
It was an absolutely brilliant
residential and it was great to see
the students thoroughly enjoying
themselves in what was, for some,
their first time away from home. A
huge ‘well done’ to all the students
who came on the trip, you were a
credit to yourselves as well as the
school. It was great to see so many
students persevere with each of
the activities which were
challenging and tricky at times!
Women In Leadership
The Women in Leadership programme initially started in Year 10 and has continued into Year 11, where
the 15 students currently participating are giving up their own time during school holidays to work
offsite at TransUnion.
This has been a fantastic and stimulating opportunity for the students to become part of an
international programme, participating in work experience to develop their skills and knowledge of
the working environment.
It is all credit to the students’ hard work, maturity and commitment that they have been invited back;
they embraced the activities and challenges,
exhibited great energy and have surpassed the
expectations of TransUnion.
After successfully completing the initial
programme, the students were invited to work
alongside some of the Mentors who are
professional high achieving women from the
Finance Industry.
This has been an exciting and rare opportunity
which the students have seized with vigour and
enthusiasm, demonstrating their ability to be
responsible and resilient in overcome challenges
that take them out of their comfort zone.
More recently some of the girls were able to practice the skills learnt and have become Head Girl,
Senior Prefects and Prefects.

Year 9 Breathe Leeds Project
This half term 12 Year 9 students have taken part in a #Breathe Leeds
Project. This was run by a company called IVE who aim to develop creative
thinking. On the launch day, professionals from The NHS, Leeds City
Council and The University of Bradford came to inform the students about
all the issues caused by air pollution in Leeds.
Following that the students worked in two groups, once a week after
school, to develop their own ideas to help reduce pollution in Leeds. On
28th November the two teams presented their proposals at the Town Hall
in a “Dragons Den” style competition. The “Dragons” were professionals
working in different companies, but all with the aim of tackling air
pollution.
The results will be announced soon
and the winning idea will be taken

worked extremely hard and

Diocesan Youth Leadership Group – “The Twelve”
Caitlin Wolstenholme, Year 11 student, has recently been commissioned as a member of the Diocesan Youth
Leadership Group - “The Twelve”.
Twelve representatives from across the Diocese have been asked to speak on behalf of all the youth living within
the Leeds Diocese. We are extremely proud that Caitlin has been approached, and she is a true inspiration of
Catholic and Christian living in all she does.
Caitlin writes…
“Being a member of ‘The Twelve’ is a great honour and
privilege. It has enabled me to gain confidence in myself and
become a better leader. I began being a member, being
nominated by a member of my parish.
Whilst being in ‘The Twelve’, I have made new friends who are
also members and I have also had the privilege of meeting
Bishop Marcus, the bishop of the Diocese of Leeds. As part of the group, we are collaborating with Bishop
Marcus in finding ways to encourage youth within our churches and parishes, to become closer to God and
attend Mass on a weekly basis. This is an experience of a life time, one which I can shape in many ways, and
something I feel privileged to be a part of.”
King’s College London Mentoring
Since October, Mount St Mary’s students have been receiving email mentoring
from King’s College, London students, focusing on a drive towards a career in
law in the future. This mentoring has been led by former Mount St Mary’s
student Sam Clare, who is now studying Politics at King’s College, London and is
the treasurer for the KCL Bar and Mooting society. In January KCL students will
visit MSM to help students further with their careers in Law.
One of Jesus’ most memorable teachings is that we should
“Love our Neighbour”. St James backed this up by stating that “Faith without action is
dead.” We are called to show our love for our neighbour through our actions.
Each half term at Mount St Mary’s we put this into action in many ways. One of the ways
we show that we love our neighbour is by supporting our MAD campaign. Each half term
students and staff “Give Back” as much as we can, in order to Make A Difference to the
lives of those less fortunate within our local community.
We focus on giving one item of everyday food, which we offer to support the work of the Sisters of Renewal
who live and work within our local area. During our first half term we focussed on Soup, and were able to offer
a complete car boot full of a whole variety of tins and packets…
We have moved on to Cereal this half term and hopefully will be able to offer even more to support the sisters’
work before Christmas. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Bar Mock Trial
On Saturday 30th November, Miss Evans, Mr Hinchley, Miss Rathore and Miss Coen took a group of Year 10 and
11 students to the Bar Mock Trial competition at Leeds Magistrates Court. Prior to the competition, students
prepared two cases for trial, working as prosecution and defence teams.
Students competed in three rounds against other schools from
around the region, defending in the first two rounds and
prosecuting in the third. Faith Odeyo, Carmella Messu Pianta,
Bradley Barker and Harvey Drummond were outstanding lawyers,
with Bradley and Harvey receiving exceptional praise from one of
the professional barristers. Johanna Jermy, Jevic Juma,
Sophie Newton-Harvey and William Swafi acted as witnesses and
knew their roles extensively, dealing well with the interrogation
