DOES BROWARD COUNTY NEED AN

OMBUDSMAN?

An Ombudsman? What is that? How many times do we hear about
government “red tape?” How many times do we hear about how difficult it is
to get a response from government? An Ombudsman is a person who works for

the government and can cut through the red tape. When there is an emergency

in the community, an Ombudsman will be able to get ahold of the right person

to get action done. Many cities and universities have an Ombudsman, who

is there when the government “drops the ball.” In an emergency, when you
cannot reach your local official and/or government offices are closed, the
Ombudsman provides a fail-safe way to help Broward residents. Please send

Golf and Tips
By Kevin Battersby, PGA

After a long hot summer, it’s
time to get out the golf clubs and
sharpen your game. This summer’s
renovation of the greens, with
paspalum grass, has provided an
excellent putting surface to go
along with the renovations from
the previous year. I think you
will find the entire golf course
to be in the best condition that I
have personally seen in the last 12
years. The new tee box on the 2nd
hole provides a more challenging
look and a few extra yards.

TIP OF THE MONTH

When managing your tee shots on any hole, teeing up on the side of the
trouble gives you more room for error. For example: with the lake on the 1st
hole, right handed golfers should tee their ball closer to the right tee marker.
This gives you a better angle away from the hazard. This strategy can also
be employed on holes 7, 8, 9, 16, 17, and 18.

Complimentary golf classes will resume on select Fridays in November.
Kevin is available for private lessons and group lessons. For more information,
contact Kevin at 954-444-1031, www.battersbygolf.com or e-mail: kevin.

Mt. Trashmore Gets A New Name

Towering 200 feet above the Florida Turnpike just north of Sample Road,
Waste Management’s Central Disposal landfill, more commonly known as
Mt. Trashmore, has stood as monument to our society’s culture of waste for

more than 40 years.
On Earth Day, the company invited more than 15-hundred students to the

facility to announce its new name which they fell is more reflective of its
true purpose.

So Central Disposal is out – the Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park is in.

“The nation has moved from a culture of ‘throw it away’to one that reduces,

reuses and recycles its waste and in the case of this campus, is using that

waste to create clean, renewable energy,” said Dawn McCormick, Community

Affairs Manager for Waste Management said in a statement. “We are now so

much more than a landfill, and we felt it was time to recognize that in a new
name and celebrate it with our local students during our Earth Day event.”

When the facility opened in 1965 as one of the first waste facilities in
South Florida owned and developed by Wayne Huizenga. While it takes in

approximately 35-hundred tons of waste each day, it also processes up to
2,250 tons of trash per day turning it into enough electricity to power nearly
40,000 homes. The facility also produces methane gas which powers turbines
to provide power to additional 9,000 homes.

“We have a great environmental and renewable energy story to tell and

the new name captures the essence of our efforts in South Florida,” said

McCormick.

To mark the name change, a new monument sign will be erected at

the intersection of Powerline Road and Wiles Road. Along both roads

the company recently planted

more than 500 new native
Oak trees, Royal Palms and

Bismarck Palms, as well as 200
butterfly attracting vines along
its perimeter walls, as part of its

site beautification efforts.

My New Book
By Phil Edwards

Book Summary

We all must deal with life’s slings and arrows—and part of that means
dealing with some assholes along the way.

Edwards’s new book, Assholes: A Field Guide, offers suggestions and
activities on how to transcend life’s daily obstacles and deal with the assholes
in your path. Social interactions can be a deceptively complicated thing,
and there is no one magical recipe to make problems go away.  Assholes:
A Field Guide offers skills and strategies to successfully engage those that
make life difficult, while helping the reader understand his/her responses in
those trying exchanges. Edwards outlines how to set helpful boundaries that
support the other person while not allowing that person to take advantage
of a difficult situation.

The book also is not an “us versus them” approach. Edwards implores you
to consider your own actions and think about the ways in which you can
work on improving your own communication. Assholes: A Field Guide
is a deft primer on how to navigate tricky social scenarios with empathy,
insight, and a minimum of fuss.

Autobiography

Philip Edwards is a Vietnam veteran
and urban specialist whose work has
brought him everywhere from Chicago
to Nairobi, Kenya.

While pastoring urban churches,
Edwards led his congregations to reach
out to marginalized groups such as sex
trade workers, addicts, the homeless
and street gangs.  During that time, he
counselled families in crisis and taught
courses in communication skills and
problem solving.  Later, he worked as a mediator in the provincial courts
of Ontario and as a teacher for the severely emotionally disturbed.

He hopes that readers of his book will learn new skills and strengthen their
existing skills in navigating life’s daily challenges.  Edwards also writes
a monthly historical column for his local newspaper. His writings can be

Appreciating
Grandma Moses

and
Regional Art
in Bennington

By Barry Issac

This Summer, Annette McKinney and I were for-
tunate enough to spend a delightful day in the Ben-
nington Museum in Historic Bennington, Vermont.
We especially enjoyed its fine, plentiful collection of
oil paintings and watercolor paintings by Grandma
Moses. Many of these paintings by Grandma Mo-
ses emphasized the beauty of small Vermont and
Central New York State communities. Among the
paintings that we saw by Grandma Moses, which we
especially savored, were “Mount Nebo in Winter,
Sugaring Off, Bennington, Battle of Bennington,”
and “Eagle Bridge Hotel.” These paintings were
done in an American Primitive style.

The Bennington Museum also has a fine collec-
tion of oil paintings by painters associated with this
region of the United States, including paintings by
Sheldon Peck’s, “Anne Herrick, Folk Art Portrait,”
Ralph Earl’s, “View of Bennington,” (also associat-
ed with Loyalism during the American Revolution),
Arthur Wilder’s, “Calvin Coolidge Birthplace Plym-
outh Notch, Vermont,” Francis Colburn’s, “Charlie
Smith and His Barn,” Milton Avery’s, “Fall in Ver-
mont,” Jules Oilskin Paul Feeley’s, “Canopus”(a
fine Contemporary work), among others.

We also saw this museum’s fine extensive collec-
tion of Ceramic Creations done by these Vermont-
connected ceramic works; United States Pottery
and Norton Pottery. Most of these works were
done in the 19th Century. We especially liked the
United States Pottery’s, “Water Cooler, 1847” and
“Standing Stag.”

This museum also has a comprehensive collection
of artifacts relating to the American Revolution
and the Battle of Bennington in 1777. It has lots of
information about the achievements of the Green
Mountain Boys (Seth Warner and Ethan Allen) and
the importance of their defeat of the British as well
as their Hessian mercenaries.

In Bennington, we also appreciated the beauty of
the Bennington Monument, which is very close to
the Bennington Museum. The Bennington Monu-
ment, run by the state of Vermont, is a fine tribute
to the Green Mountain Boys.

an hour of your life doing something very meaningful instead of just sitting
around doing nothing. I was crying because it took me the entire hour to come up with the number.
For you to get a better idea of what I’m talking about, I will give you a few
examples of some of the entries I have made in my “How Many Times?” Along with all that, there is the sad possibility that I just might have to revise
notebook over the years. I think by the time you finish reading this, you will
rush out to Walmart to get your own notebook that you will entitle, “How the number up as I continue to try my luck at getting dates.

One day, my principal called me into her office. For some reason, I thought
that she was going to congratulate me on the wonderful job I was doing. 4 – Many Times My Diaper Was Changed?
My mother and I put our heads together on this “How Many Times?” We

were able to come up with a reasonably good estimate. Because she couldn’t

afford a diaper service, she had to wash all my diapers by herself. As my

mother explained to me, she had to cut down on this unbearably awful job of

washing them. She said that there were just too many of them to wash. On

top of that, she claimed that the house was beginning to have “this terrible

smell.” That’s funny because as a little boy, I always loved that smell she

was talking about. In any case, when I was 8 months old, she felt enough was

enough, and that’s when she decided to change my diaper only twice a day,

no matter what my situation was. Because I wasn’t toilet trained until I was
5-1/2, the number of diapers I required over all that time was beyond belief,
as you can just imagine. At some point when I was 5-1/2, my mother told me,
“Whatever you do in your pants from now on is your business because I’m
not changing anymore of your diapers! I’m done with this!” Coincidently,
when she broke the news to me, on that very day, I taught myself to be toilet

trained. My “How Many Times?” notebook entry for How Many Times My
Diaper Was Changed? 4,754.

I’m just hoping that as a senior, I won’t have to revise this number. However,

given my irregularity, I think that there just might be a very good chance this

entry will have to be revised.

By now, I am absolutely certain, after reading these few examples I

presented, you can see how much fun this “How Many Times?” exercise can

be. If you need any help in setting yourself up, please don’t hesitate to call

me. Try to be patient if I can’t get to you right away. I anticipate that either I

might be swamped by so many others wanting my assistance or I might just

be too busy changing my diaper.
