Temple Beth Orr’s
“Fabulous Fifties Plus”
By Joyce Rubin
In 2007, as long-time members, my husband
Jerry and I saw the opportunity for a social
group for seniors, and so “Fabulous Fifties
Plus” was born. At our first planning meeting,
we developed our Mission Statement: “to plan
and implement social events that are fun and
interesting to Temple Beth Orr members.”
For the past eleven years, “Fabulous Fifties
Plus,” true to its mission, has become a vehicle
for building deep and enduring friendships
within our TBO family.
We join together monthly for a “Fabulous”
event as well as meeting bi-monthly to
schmooze and plan for future activities. We
have more than 90 members (in their 50’s to
their 90’s) dancing, singing, dining, and “living
Jewish.”
Sampling of events:
Dinner, Dancing, and Doo-Op
Marlins Baseball Game
Beach Party Barbeque
Concerts
Square Dancing
Theater Outings
Chanukah Pot Luck Dinner
Dinner and Racing at Pompano Racetrack
Bunko and Pizza at TBO
Movie Night (with Discussion) and dessert
Trivia Night
Comedy Club
Becoming a member of our “Fabulous
Fifties Plus” is one of the many reasons why
joining the congregation at Temple Beth Orr
will enhance your connection to Judaism and
the Jewish community. Check us out. Come
make new friends.

36 OCTOBER 2018 The INSIDER
Dear Dr. Joy...
By Joy Berke Sanchez, PhD
Upon my return to Wynmoor five days ago,
I have spent much of that time seeing friends.
That part is nothing unusual. What turned out
unusual is that so many of them, me included,
developed many more aches and pains over
the past few months. Yes, we are all older than
we have ever been, but no one accepts these
changes lying down. Well, sometimes, lying
down is all that is possible. So, what do we do
and how to handle the emotions and psycho-
logical shifts that come along with this?
My first recommendation is obviously to get
yourself checked out by your physician(s). Once you know what the situ-
ation is, you can take the steps necessary to help yourself. But what next?
What if you are told, as so many of us have been, that you have arthritis or
osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia or a host other basically non-treatable painful
issue? How do we keep ourselves positive and our quality of life high and
happy? If you’ve been reading my articles for a while, you probably know
just where I’m going to go with this and most likely you will be correct.
Focus, focus, focus. But stay away from paying all your attention to your
pains. If you remember, I previously asked you to keep lists of positive
aspects and things and people you find appreciation in. Keep looking for
things that you like, things that bring a smile to your heart. If you are look-
ing, you will find. Likewise, if you are looking to complain, you will also
find plenty to fit that category. I am definitely not a Pollyanna by nature and
can moan and groan with the best of them, but I am a work-in-progress and
consider myself a happiness trainee. While I’m not denying that my body
hurts, I try not to pay a lot of attention to it while looking to the parts that
don’t hurt. Today was the first rehearsal for our Actors on Stage group and I
hadn’t seen anyone in the group since April or May. When people saw me,
they all commented positively on how I looked. I had lost a few pounds,
cut my hair and colored it much lighter. I noticed that I was ready to list my
aches and pains to negate all the good stuff, and even started to when I cut it
off. I decided to focus on how nice their compliments felt instead. I realized
that my discomfort felt less, and my happiness level felt higher. We really
don’t need other people for this although I admit it was nice. We can do it
for ourselves. Find something about yourself, especially in the physical area
since that is what you are feeling negative about, that you like. Perhaps, it’s
your eyes or even your fingernails or sense of smell. Whatever you are not
unhappy about is what to focus on. If it doesn’t hurt to take a deep breath,
take one and really appreciate the feeling of the air going in and out of your
lungs. Remind yourself that there are things about your body that pleases
you and that you feel good about.
Try meditation. Sit as comfortably as you can and just focus on your breath.
When your mind is quiet, you are not thinking about what hurts. Do this for
about 15 minutes a day starting with 5 if that’s all you can sit for.
And the most important thing of all: stop talking about your pain. This
really hit me right between the eyes today when I caught myself about to
start doing just that. What you focus on and think about grows and what you
ignore begins to fade into the background of your consciousness. I know that
once something hurts, it becomes very difficult to not put all your attention
on it, but this is a beginner’s exercise. Just try it for a while. By the way, if
I thought that talking about all the things in my body that hurt and focusing
on them would actually help me feel better, I’d be the first in line to do it.
But it doesn’t help and actually makes it hurt more. Catch yourself and it
will become easier and easier. Of course, listening to the litany of everyone
else’s pains won’t help you either and you will be very tempted to commis-
erate with these people. No one said this would be easy but in the long run,
you will feel better.
Wishing you pain-free days.
