The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) defines speciation analysis as the “analytical activities of identifying and/or measuring the quantities of one or more individual chemical species in a sample.” A chemical species is a “specific form of an element defined as to isotopic composition, electronic or oxidation state, and/or complex or molecular structure.” In speciation analysis, the objective is usually to determine the identity and/or concentration of one or more chemical species in a sample, often of natural origin and therefore potentially containing many different species. Care must be taken to choose and execute the analysis to maximize sensitivity and specificity. Performing a speciation analysis in a complex mixture involves separation, identification, and characterization of various forms of elements in the sample. The most commonly used strategy for speciation analysis is to perform a separation step before a generic detector. LC separation coupled with ICP-MS The hyphenated technique HPLC-ICP-MS is a robust, sensitive element-selective method capable of giving a complete picture of the elemental species in a solution. The elemental response is usually independent of species, so it is often possible to quantify a species even when its structure is unknown (assuming good HPLC recovery). Identification, however, is based solely on retention time matching. Therefore, a compound in the sample can be identified only by comparison with a standard. These specifications have become the standard for chemicals used in many high-purity applications. The ACS sets requirements and develops validated methods to determine the purity of chemical reagents. Honeywell Research Chemicals offers a comprehensive range of ACS grade solvents for your research needs. The ACS solvents meet or exceed the specifications set by the American Chemical Society. They are certified solvents with high purity and reliability because they are manufactured under stringent quality control. A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) are available for each solvent. Honeywell ACS solvents can be used for ACS applications, including the analysis for carbonyl compounds or for other analytical techniques within quality control, research and development requiring high purity and quality solvents. Karl Fischer Titration Honeywell offers the world-leading Hydranal product line. You can now enjoy a wide range of pyridine-free Karl Fischer reagents for both volumetric and coulometric titrations for nearly all types of samples, completed by a broad range of standards. Coulometry Coulometric reagents based on different solvent compositions serve to support the broad variety of samples analyzed. Furthermore, some working techniques are supported by special reagents, i.e. the use of a Karl Fischer oven by Hydranal-Coulomat AG-Oven or the use of a cell without diaphragm by Hydranal-Coulomat AD. Volumetry The latest formulation of Hydranal-Composite reagents improves stability and eliminates the formation of crystals which can interfere with the titrator’s performance. Hydranal-Methanol Rapid containing accelerators, less toxic ethanol-based media (E-type), and methanol-free media for ketones and aldehydes (K-types) have also been developed, as well as the more commonly used dry methanol. Water Standards Hydranal-Water Standards are designed for calibration, validation, and inspection of analytical instruments and reagents.
