INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, technology can be a useful
servant but it can also be an untrustworthy
master. If you use devices such as
smartphones or computers for everything
from eating meals to playing games, you’ll
find yourself stagnating in comparison to
those who keep life going even when
they’re on their computers. Technology
plays an important role in society today. It
has positive and negative effects on the
world and it impacts daily lives. We are
living in an era where technological
advances are common but there’s a
downside to it all.

POSITIVE IMPACT
OF TECHNOLOGY

Education

The role of technology in the world of education has
been ever changing. One aspect of technology that
has had a significant impact on society is how it
affects learning. It has made learning more
interactive and collaborative, which allows people to
better engage with the material they are learning and
having difficulty with. It also gives you better access
to resources. With the invention of the internet, we
now have access to information twenty-four hours a
day, seven days a week, and can find almost
anything online. Also, it makes students finish their
homework easily. Students can take quizzes and
exams more easily, and teachers can hold online
classes that are very effective. It also broadens the
scope of the classroom, encouraging self-paced
learning. People can learn through YouTube and
social media. These technological advancements
made learning more enjoyable and convenient.

Communication

Another way technology has impacted society is
through communication, how we talk and
communicate with one another worldwide.
Technology brought many new methods of
electronic communication. For example, there
are emails, social networking, you can facetime
a person that lives on the other side of the
world, and here’s video conferencing where you
can have conferences electronically. Lastly, the
technological advancements that were made
within the health industry have helped keep
people safe and healthy. There are many
innovative apps on phones that allow people to
watch their weight, how many calories they
intake, heart rate and other health properties
any time of the day. There’s increased
accessibility of treatment available, there’s the
change in healthcare that adds benefits for the
elderly, and hospitals using advanced
technology within their surgical rooms.

NEGATIVE IMPACT
OF TECHNOLOGY

Reduce Sleep Quality

A study from JAMA Paediatrics found that
children and adolescents who use media before
bed were two times more likely to not get
enough sleep at night. Having access to a media
device in their sleeping environment was linked
to getting insufficient sleep, even if the gadget
was not actively utilised near bedtime.
Depending on their age, children under the age
of 13 require 11-14 hours of sleep. For children,
sleep is vital since it promotes growth, improves
heart health, and even enhances learning. When
adolescents do not obtain the required amount
of sleep each night, however, these vital traits
can deteriorate. Technology, like most other
things that children enjoy, such as pizza or
candy, may be wonderful—but only in
moderation. Misuse and a lack of attention to
how much technology is "too much" are the
disadvantages linked with technology. Hence,
the idea of limiting the time that their young
spend on the computer or smartphone appears
plausible.

Fake news and

misinformation

Fake news and misinformation have been around
for a long time, but with tremendous technological
advancements, it's hard to keep up with what's
true and what isn't. Deepfakes are an example of
a relatively new threat that is causing serious
issues for all social media sites. There have
already been a variety of deepfake occurrences. A
recent example involved the Foreign Affairs
Committee of the Dutch parliament, which was
duped into making a video chat with a deepfake
portraying a Russian opposition leader. That time,
no serious harm was done. However, it was a brief
lesson that indicated a potential future hazard. In
order to combat Deepfake videos, back in 2019,
Facebook launched a Deepfake Detection
Challenge to develop autonomous algorithmic
detection systems. Social media platforms in
general are struggling with content moderation.
At the beginning of 2021, Twitter launched a pilot
“Birdwatch” programme, aiming to build a
community to help fight misinformation and fake
news.

CONCLUSION

Ultimately, all of these factors have an
impact on how people react today. Using
a computer or a phone has become a
part of everyone's regular routine. It is
required in the majority of circumstances,
particularly when they are older and
have responsibilities. However, excessive
use of technology must be avoided. It is
crucial for people to understand that,
despite technology being a wonderful
thing, it should not be utilised all of the
time. They must not get severely reliant
on it. People must understand that
technology is not always the best solution
to a problem.
