iEM EDITOR’S Note…..with Lyma Dunbar
WELCOME to iEM
I confess that I have not been to many of the Carnivals throughout
North America, including Toronto’s Caribana, and maybe that
testimony, to some may not give me the credentials required to share
this editorial, however I am going All In.
The History of Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago, dates back to the 18th
Century, and over the years in my island nation, it has evolved from
the traditions of Dame Lorraine and Midnight Robber, to the majestic
creativity of Peter Minshall and Edmund Hart, to the Brazil-style of
sequined bikini tops and feathers. The music trucks got larger as they
blast the hypnotic sounds of the latest soca music to the receptive
gyrating bodies of the energetic masqueraders and crowds. This
evolution is my culture!
Miami Carnival Weekend, starting from Thursday’s Junior Parade of
the Bands straight through to the Epic culmination on Sunday night
with performances that included Kes the Band, Dil E Nadan and the Boss performance by the Trinidad
and Tobago Prison Service Band, delivered a packaged cultural presentation.
The Panorama competition which was held jointly on Friday with the King and Queen of the Bands,
provided seven steel orchestras with the opportunity to vie for first place. The location and performance
amenities were more than adequate, and the performance level of each band exceeded my expectations.
The Kings and Queens competition, was a presentation of color and creativity, that gave you flashes of
Trinidad’s Dimanche Gras but on a much smaller scale. The monster Fetes each night, delivered with
some of the biggest names in soca music; and J’ouvert was the revelry that is typical of the celebration,
with blue everywhere, and just Mawd fun!!
Sunday in Miami…. The Parade of the Bands was spectacular!!! It should be noted however, that this
year, saw a decrease in bands competing, but none the less, it was still truly an impressive display of color
in a continuous flood of masqueraders waiting impatiently to “rush the stage” in that one moment to be
seen by the Judges, and then “Wine and Fling it Up!”
Miami being an existing melting pot of international diversity, had an additional array of cultures visiting
from all parts of the country as well as those flying in from Trinidad and Tobago. All aspects of a North
American Carnival were represented, from the different array of flags and food, to those that attended and
participated, which makes Miami a True Destination Carnival.
