Mobile phone is very popular in today‘s generation and it has become a very necessary thing to have for everyone. A mobile phone also known as a cellphone is a portable electronic device used for communication. This device allows people to send text messages, access the Internet, and make and receive calls are the main functions of a mobile phone. Mobile phone operates through cellular networks, which have base stations that transmit signals so communication between mobile devices can be made. We can see that mobile phone is indeed a wonderful invention of man. It does not only help people to communicate but also to entertain. However, there are advantages and disadvantages of mobile phones for students. First of all, mobile phones can help us keep ourselves up to date. As it keeps us informed of all current issues happening around the world that we are not aware of. For example, the news about COVID19 cases can be known before it becomes very serious, with this information we can be alert and take precautions to be not affected by it. All this kind of information is shared throughout various platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google, and WhatsApp. This platform give us access, where we can watch video online dan read news from other countries. We will get to be informed about the most recent developments or trends. Hence, we will always be up to date on all the matters that happening around us. In addition, we can learn many new skills using our mobile phone. There are many skills we can learn from mobile phones such as digital learning, language learning, baking classes, and learning to access resources. For example, we can learn new languages effectively by using language exchange platforms on phones aid and language learning apps. In this way, we don’t have to travel far to learn new skills. There are numerous educational apps that can help us with subjects, skills development, and languages such as Google Meet, Zoom, and Skype to join a class and study. We also can experience the diversity of learning through mobile phones like ebooks, online courses, and interactive learning. Therefore, we can gain more knowledge through our fingertips. 1
Moreover, mobile phones work as a source of entertainment. It serves as a portable entertainment device. It allows us to watch videos, play games, listen to music, and read books or articles. In this way, we can enjoy or be entertained anywhere and any time we are. For example, we can enjoy watching TV series by using apps like Netflix, Disney, and Amazon Prime Video that allow us to stream while we go on vacation. This way we won’t be bored and get to relaxed. It works as an alternative for entertainment that works as a hands-on mobile phone we have today. The most popular entertainment by using a mobile phone is gaming. Mobile games are popular sources of entertainment that can be downloaded from app stores like Google Play Store or Apple Store. Nevertheless, there are disadvantages of mobile phones for students. First, students gradually become passive in their actions. This is because we spend excessive screen time using mobile phones which can lead to reduced physical activity and limited engagement with surroundings. This may prevent us from socializing with other people in real life. For example, students would not go out with their parents, because they are focused on playing games. Students might prefer playing games or watching videos online rather than spending quality time with family and friends. Hence, this action is also known as social isolation, which is a growing concern in today’s interconnected world, impacting individuals of all ages. Besides, students have the tendency to neglect their duties. They neglect their homework or revision because they are so keen on using their mobile phones, which can lead to addictive behaviour. For example, students struggle to manage their time effectively, often prioritizing mobile phone activities over essential academic tasks. This will lead them to incomplete assignments and missed deadlines. They also tend to refuse to help with house chores because they do not want to miss watching their favourite drama. This constant addiction to social media and the fear of missing out can contribute to stress and anxiety among students, affecting their overall well-being. 2
Thirdly, the bad influence of mobile phones on the young generation is inevitable. It can encourage them to commit crimes. This is because mobile phones facilitate constant access to social media platforms, where peer pressure and negative influences can thrive. For example, violence, nudity, and irrelevance trends can be accessed easily online. This can lead to robbery, theft, spreading fake news, murder, and cyberbullying. Cyberbullying incidents are the most common among students and can lead to emotional distress and harm to victims. Therefore, excessive screen time can lead to addiction and encourage deviant behaviour. At the same time, there are some ways to get over mobile addiction. We can get some help from our loved ones. We can spend some time talking to our parents or playing physical games with our friends rather than trying to play games with an unknown person online. This way we will notice that these activities are much more fun. Other than that, we can also indulge in other acts such as painting, dancing, playing outdoor or indoor games, and completing household tasks. This will lower our urge to check our mobile phones frequently. In conclusion, mobile phones are powerful tools that have reshaped the way we live, work, and interact. However, as a student, we must know how to use mobile phones wisely. Be extra careful not to overindulge in it and use it sensibly. It’s essential to strike a balance and use mobile phones responsibly to maximize their benefits while minimizing the drawbacks.
