The statute of The International Rachmaninov Competition of Young Pianists

The Administration of Tambov region, Department of Cultire and archives of the Tambov
region, Tambov Music Institute named after S.Rachmaninov from 29.04.2012 to 8.05.2012 would be
held VI International Rachmaninov Competition of Young Pianists. The Competition was started in
1994 and is held every four years.

VI International Rachmaninov Competition of Young Pianists promotes the integration of
Russian musical culture into the system of international relations. The competition is aimed at the
intensification of the position of the Russian culture abroad, the formation of the image of Russia as
the country of great cultural traditions and rich musical heritage. The main aim of the competition is
the maintenance, the popularization, the development of traditions of professional musical
performance and musical art.

The content of the project

The International Rachmaninov Competition of young pianists is the first competition in Russia
that sets itself the task of consolidating national piano music traditions as the most important part of
national culture, the part not studied enough and not properly evaluated.

International Rachmaninov Competition of young pianists in Tambov is a satellite of the
monographic competition in Moscow. It is to follow the traditional succession of competitive selection
but now on the basis of Russian music.

Conditions of the competition

The competitors eligible or participation should be born not earlier than May 1,1992. The
maximal number of participants is 30 persons.

Applications will be accepted until February 15, 2012.
Documents to be submitted:

− application form;
− letter of recommendation from a music organization or institution;
− birth certificate (copy);
− certificate of music education;
− curriculum vitae (for publication);
− press reports on performing activity (if any), letters of recommendation of well-known

musicians;
− two photographs size 3x4 cm and 13x18 cm in digital and paper view; they must be

signed on the reverse;
− receipt of application fee paid;
− programme of performance at the Competition with the indication of duration of each

piece.

The documents are to be submitted in Russian or in English.

Competition programme

First round (not more than 30 minutes)
One polyphony piece by the following Russian composers: P. Tchaikovsky, S. Taneyev, A.
Glazunov, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, D. Shostakovich, R. Shchedrin, S. Slonimsky*.
One virtuoso etude by the following Russian composers: A. Rubinstein, A. Glazunov,
S. Lyapunov, A. Arensky, F. Blumenfeld, A. Skriabin, S. Prokofyev, I. Stravinsky.
S. Rachmaninov. One piece of the early opuses or one prelude (op.23 or op.32).

* As an exception participants are allowed to perform polyphony piece by a western composer instead (under the program
of the institution).

Second round (not more than 45 minutes)
One major piece by the following Russian composers: M. Musorgsky, P. Tchaikovsky, A.
Glazunov, A. Skriabin, S. Rachmaninov, A. Lyadov, N. Metner, S. Prokofyev, D. Shostakovich,
I. Stravinsky, N. Myaskovsky, R. Shchedrin, D. Kabalevsky*.
One or several piano miniature (XIX–XX centuries) by the following Russian composers: M.
Glinka, M. Balakirev, A. Arensky, A. Lyadov, P. Tchaikovsky (op. 19,op. 40,op. 72), A.
Skriabin, N. Metner, S. Prokofyev, D. Shostakovich, R. Shchedrin.
S. Rachmaninov, Etude-picture or transcription.

* As an exception participants are allowed to perform major piece by a western composer instead (under the program of the
institution).

Third round
One from S. Rachmaninov's concertos (from the first four concertos either the 1st movement or
the 2–3 movements must be performed)

Any changes in the programme are not allowed. A piece performed in one round must not be
performed in other rounds. Foreign participants may have free of charge copies of music never
published abroad (except pieces by Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Mussorgsky and
Tchaikovsky).

The aplication fee of 2500 rubles should be paid by the remittance to the settlement account of

The confirmation of the status as a competition participant (official invitation for foreign
participants) is sent to candidates after the confirmation of the application fee payment . In case of
renunciation of a registered participant, the application fee is not repaid.

The competition is held at the Rachmaninov Institute.

The participants travelling expenses (to Tambov and back) are not paid by the Organizing
Committee. Foreign participants must obtain their passports and visas themselves upon confirmation
of their status as a competition participant.

The Organizing Committee will pay all living expenses (hotel and meals) to the participants
only during the period of their participation in the Competition. Practice facilities are provided.
