Here are some helpful suggestions. First, figure out what the

hunting or using for personal protection? This will help you
when choosing the proper firearm. Next you will want to have a

Sharon Burwell of Duncansville, PA has been shooting
handguns and competing for 8 years and is a certified NRA
instructor who teaches handgun safety classes. I spoke with
Sharon and she feels the reason a handgun class is important is
that it teaches you how to shoot correctly. The correct stance,
using the correct eye, holding the gun properly. Sharon stated,
“What you learn in class is your starting point or baseline.
We teach you the correct way to shoot a gun. This gives you
something to build on. You take that knowledge you received
with the skill and continue to practice so it becomes muscle
memory. We also teach safety, such as keep your finger away from
the trigger, always assume every gun is loaded and what’s behind
your target.” Sharon said that you can look online if you are

A er your safety class is completed it doesn’t stop there!
Practice, practice, practice. Just because you now own a gun and

skill of shooting will become mechanical and automatic. You
won’t have to think about what to do should there ever be an
instance you need your pistol in a situation.
I have had people ask me before what am I so afraid of that I
feel necessary to carry a gun. My response is, “I’m not afraid of
anything. It’s more of being prepared for any situation. Just like
having a fire extinguisher at home. That doesn’t mean my house
will catch on fire. Or having a flashlight near my bed in case the
power goes out. I’m equipped for myself or loved ones not to be
a victim. Carrying a gun does make me feel safer. It’s all about
preparation…and who I am!” G

Injectable fillers will fill most lines and wrinkles. They can also

Dr. Kimberly urges women of all ages to take care of their skin
even if you are not having cosmetic treatments. She recommends
always using sunscreen. A good SPF sunscreen can go under a
daily make-up routine, or be incorporated, so there’s no excuse and
it should be reapplied during the day. Sun protection is important
even for children and can help prevent premature aging and skin
cancer. “That’s my major take home message,” she said.

When considering cosmetic treatment, Dr. Kimberly
recommends your first step should be scheduling a consultation
with a doctor. “In a consultation, I would typically go through the
skincare concerns with a patient and gear a regimen toward those
needs. In addition to using sunscreens and avoiding sun damage
from a young age, at-home skin damage preventatives include
avoiding smoking, which can add two years to your face, and
staying hydrated (see page 11), which helps keep skin throughout
the body healthy.”

For a taste of what the chemical peels can do,
microdermabrasion scrubs and some chemical resurfacing
products are available at the drugstore, though the “quality of
depth” is not the same as what a doctor can o er. The clinical
products, however, are typically hypoallergenic and have a stronger
percentage of the key, active ingredients.

Smoking Propaganda and Women

By George M. Zlupko, M.D., FCCP
In the 1920’s the cigarette industry began a rather strong campaign

geared to encourage women to smoke.
The Federal government played a role in the competition between

the tobacco companies, when the Sherman Anti-Trust Act divided
the American Tobacco Trust into several di erent companies, making
market share critical. Reynolds Tobacco came out with Camels; Liggett &
Myers had Chesterfields; and the American Tobacco Company had Lucky Strike.
The su rage movement in the United States gave women a sense of entitlement,
freedom and, of course, the tobacco companies took advantage of this. Ad
campaigns o en utilized prominent women, including Amelia Earhart, and appealed
to the vanity of women by promising slimming e ects on their weight. Television
also o ered incentives for women to smoke. The I Love Lucy show was promoted by
the Phillip Morris’ brand, and Your Hit Parade was sponsored by the American Tobacco
Company’s Lucky Strike. The advertising worked. In 1970, 31.5% of women were smokers.
In the 1980’s the first Surgeon General’s Report on the health consequences of smoking
for women was published. It is important to note that this was 15 years a er the original
1964 Surgeon General’s Report and came nearly 60 years a er tobacco companies began
marketing their products to women. The smoking rate in 1980 for women was 29.3% and
in 1990’s it dropped to 22.8%.
Unfortunately, women develop their lung cancers in areas of the lung which do not
provide a great deal of symptoms and by the time these cancers are found, the chance
for cure is usually not present. An early detection program, such as we have at the Lung
Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania, can help women whether they are former smokers
or current smokers.
If you are over the age of 55 and have smoked one or more packs of cigarettes a day, I
would encourage you to enter a Lung Cancer Early Detection Program. To learn more
about the early detection program and to schedule an appointment, call 814-946-2845 or

Knowledge

Is POWER

Alot has changed over the years. There are more women in
the workplace, more single women households and multi-
generation households. Most employers no longer o er
funded retirement plans and the future of the US Social Security

System seems to be a topic of change with every election cycle.

Women want it all, including earning and controlling their

own money. Unfortunately the topic of finances is a conversation

a lot of mothers do not have with their daughters, nor does dad.

If you had a good role model concerning finances, you know the

importance of budgeting your money including a portion for

investment and future retirement.

A recent study by Fidelity reported that women lag behind their

male peers on earning, investing and saving money. According

to the study, women want to learn more about financial planning

and be more involved in their finances, most felt uncomfortable

talking about money.

Teresa Ciambotti, Senior Vice President-Controller with First

Commonwealth Bank, believes there are several factors causing

this lag. “Although women live and work longer, there is a gender

pay gap,” said Ciambotti. “They o en leave the work force to raise

children and care for older parents, which takes them in and out

of the work force. This makes it harder to close the income gap.”

In general Ciambotti said women are better savers, but lack

the confidence in financial planning and investments even if they
