Best of Frisco 2012 byChrisMartin

IT’S TIME ONCE AGAIN to present our annual list of Frisco’s “bests.” There’s no nomination process;
no submissions are requested. The “Best of Frisco” is simply a compilation of some of the things that,
in our opinion, help make our city such a great place to live. In most categories, one significant option
stood apart, while in others there seemed no clear choice but rather several distinct possibilities.
Although Frisco has many “bests” that could be included, we took on the challenging task of narrowing
it down to only 12. We hope you enjoy the categories and the “winners” chosen for this year’s “Best of
Frisco 2012.”

BEST NEW AT TRACTION ROLLING INTO TOWN:
MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN RAILROAD
The Museum of the American Railroad is making tracks to town to join the dynamic array of historical
attractions in downtown Frisco. The museum, originally located in Fair Park in downtown Dallas, had
been a State Fair of Texas tradition for more than four decades before beginning the move to Frisco.
Residents and visitors will soon be able to experience one of the nation’s finest collections of 20th
Century railroad artifacts, which tell the rich history of the steam engine and the railroad industry,
honoring their significance in American culture. The new location, which is being constructed in phases,
will ultimately occupy more than 12 acres on Cotton Gin Road. Construction on the site began in May
2011, with completion of Phase I expected by the end of this month. A graduated opening of the new
location is expected by the end of the year. The museums 40-piece assemblage of historic locomotives
and rail cars, including “Big Boy,” the world’s largest steam locomotive, and the nation’s premiere
collection of first-class Pullman sleeping cars from the 1920s, will fascinate guests of the finished exhibit.
In addition, the museum’s two historic structures, the circa 1900 Houston & Texas Central Depot and
the 1903 Santa Fe Interlocking Tower 19, will also make the 30-mile trek to their new Frisco home. Once
completed, the museum will be among the finest presentations of historic trains in the nation.

participate in recreating history in many
of the interactive exhibits throughout

century to a modern-day, booming
economic center. Exhibits range from
collections of fascinating local artifacts
and historical photographs, to an old-

multimedia presentations that are sure to
captivate the imagination. The Heritage
Center is an ideal place for students, as
history comes alive right before their very

view and hear the past. In addition, the
18,000-square-foot museum space, as
well as the adjacent historic structures,
which include the old Lebanon Baptist
Church, are perfect for weddings and
other family events. The museum is
also host to a number of family-friendly,
historical special events throughout the
year.

“Our mission is to teach young players to

According to the parents, the coaches

‘NO CHANGE’ FOR FRISCO
Frisco continues to work towards reducing water consumption by 10 percent and remains at Stage 3 restrictions, as recommended by
the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD). Under Frisco’s Stage 3 restrictions, outdoor watering is limited to once a week on
trash collection day — but only if necessary. In addition to Stage 3, Frisco is currently operating under time-of-day restrictions as part
of its year-round Water Management Plan. Outdoor watering is prohibited between 5 a.m. – 8 a.m. and between 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Time-
of-Day restrictions coincide with Daylight Saving Time (DST), which began March 11 and run through November 4 of this year. For more
information, go to www.friscotexas.gov/water.

NATIONAL ACCREDITATION
The City of Frisco Parks & Recreation Department has achieved national accreditation, making it only the
seventh such department in Texas — and the 74th city department in the United States — to accomplish
this goal. To date, there are 102 accredited park and recreation agencies in the country. The Commission
for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) presented City of Frisco representatives with
a certificate of achievement March 29 during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Established in 1989, CAPRA
is a division of the National Recreation and Park Association and the only national accreditation program
recognizing park and recreation agencies for excellence in operation and service. Photo provided by the City
