patented by Cuddly Cremains in Alabama,
is formed into a cylindrical shape and
sealed with the pet’s name, birthday and
picture before being permanently placed
in the stuffed animal. The result is a
keepsake that will last forever. In addition
to stuffed animals, there are a plethora
of other keepsake items pet owners can
choose from to honor their pet’s memory.
Several local pet companies offer a full-
line of cremation jewelry and keepsakes.
Keepsakes include decorative gold or
silver lockets, charms, key chains and rings,
which hold a small amount of pet cremains
or locks of fur. Also available are glass orbs
and pocket-sized glass stones, which also
hold cremains and can be taken anywhere
the pet owner goes.

Certainly less common, but nonetheless
an option, involves freeze-drying your
beloved pet. A form of traditional
taxidermy, freeze-drying creates a lasting
memorial, preserving the pet in its natural
state, without any alteration in appearance.
This is in sharp contrast to the conventional
method of taxidermy, in which only the
outer hide of the animal typically remains
and is attached to an artificial mounting.
The freeze-dry method allows pet owners
to see, touch and hold their pets as they
were, and in a sense, to never have to let
go.

If after all of this you still can’t stand
to be without your pet, the method of
cloning can be used to try and recreate
your old friend genetically. Though highly
controversial, for a fee of $100,000, a
company in Seoul, Korea will clone your pet
via mail. Owners send tissues extracted by
the vet via airmail to the company and, if
successful, roughly six months to a year
later, owners can fly to Korea to pick up
their cloned pet.

While this is certainly an extreme way to
handle losing a pet, it illustrates the fact
that there are many different ways to say
goodbye to man’s best friends. When the
time comes to let go, owners must decide
what they are most comfortable with
when considering their pet’s final resting
place. Choosing one that will best honor
a special family member that has brought
so much joy, fun and unconditional love to
their lives.

REEDY RETIRES
Dr. Rick Reedy, in his 16th year as Superintendent of Schools for the Frisco Independent School District, announced his intention to retire
this year. Dr. Reedy has told the Board that he will serve until a replacement is named. This school year marks his 37th in Frisco ISD and
his 43rd in education. “Working in this school district all these years has been a gift,” Dr. Reedy said. “No one could have ever been as
fortunate as I have been in being allowed to work with the good people of FISD.” Although he believes the timing is right, it was a difficult
decision. He says he will greatly miss the regular interaction with the Board, staff, parents and the students. All have served as his primary
source of inspiration and made this district the fine school community that it is. The trustees will meet in the near future to develop a plan
for selecting a successor.

WOOFSTOCK
The 4th annual WoofStock Festival will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Little Elm Park, 704 W. Eldorado Parkway, 1 p.m. to 6
p.m. Admission is free. Activities include live music performed by local bands, fun activities for the family, food booths, vendor displays
and raffle drawings throughout the day. Dogs are welcome in the park during the festival. Proceeds from the WoofStock Festival benefit
WoofStock, a non-profit whose mission is to give abandoned pets a second chance through adoption. The goal of WoofStock 2012 is to
raise the funds to build a no-kill animal shelter capable of rescuing up to 40 dogs and 10 cats at a time. Visit www.woofstockcamp.org for

LEGENDS NAME HEAD COACH
Texas Legends have named Eduardo Najera the first Mexican-born head coach under the
NBA umbrella, pending NBA approval. Mr. Najera becomes the third head coach in Legends
history, following former NBA Coach of the Year Del Harris and basketball Hall-of-Famer Nancy
Lieberman. Subject to NBA approval, Najera will also be a minority owner of the Legends, as
well as hold a front office position with the Mavericks. Mr. Najera’s NBA career began with
the Mavericks in 2000, after he became the first Mexican-born player to be drafted in NBA
history. Mr. Najera’s addition as a minority owner brings the Legends ownership group to four
individuals, including Chinese-born Sonny Xiao, the first Chinese-born owner under the NBA
umbrella (joining original owners Nelson and Evan Wyly). photo provided by Texas Legends

LIKE MY COMMUNITY
Liberty Mutual Insurance, one of the nation’s leading auto and home insurers with eight greater Dallas-Fort Worth offices, awarded
more than $100,000 to seven local Dallas-Fort Worth non-profit causes through the ‘Like My CommunityTM Project’, a Facebook-based
campaign. Dallas-Fort Worth residents supported these causes by casting more than 49,000 votes on Facebook and through mobile
texts. The three top-voted causes were Frisco Family Services, North Texas Food Bank and This Side Up! Family Center. Each received
$30,000 from Liberty Mutual Insurance, with This Side Up! Family Center earning an additional $5,000 for generating the most votes on
designated incentive days during the campaign.

CELEBRATING NEW CAMPUSES
The Frisco Independent School District officially dedicated its four newest schools during special events in September. Joyce Kelley
Comstock Elementary, Billy Gene Phillips Elementary, Gene and Ruby Nichols Elementary and Billy Thompson Vandeventer Middle School
opened in August to offset increasing enrollment at nearby schools. As a district, Frisco ISD now serves more than 42,000 students in six
high schools, 13 middle schools, 33 elementary schools and four special programs centers. The schools were designed and constructed
with energy efficiency and cost savings in mind. Each school features geothermal heating and cooling heat pump systems, which save
thousands of dollars over traditional HVAC systems. In addition, energy recovery ventilation systems support good thermal comfort and
indoor air quality. Building materials promote reductions in long-term maintenance, replacement and energy costs.

FISD RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD
Frisco ISD has been selected as one of America’s Promise Alliance’s 100 Best Communities for Young People, presented by ING. The
national award recognizes FISD’s outstanding and innovative work to address the high school dropout crisis and for its programs and
services that make it an outstanding place for youth to live, learn and grow. Frisco ISD, a first-time 100 Best winner, was recognized for its
dedication to youth through programs that focus on education, health, mentoring and supporting children in need. FISD will receive a
$2,500 grant, signage identifying the community as one of the nation’s 100 Best Communities for Young People and access to America’s
Promise Alliance’s community development resources. To learn more, visit www.AmericasPromise.org/100Best.
