The morning of a job interview. The night when a family member was sick. Most people have prayed in moments of desperation. Was someone listening? A moment of joy. Wonder at the stars, a mountain top. ‘My God!’ we sometimes say. And sometimes we mean it.
Why not find out if someone does listen and care?
trypraying is a unique challenge. It’s a seven day guide to help you get started on the journey of a lifetime. Put most simply, prayer
is conversation with God. Maybe God is closer than you think? God is interested in us, and we can reach out for him and find him because, in fact, he is not far from anyone.
Something missing? Even with a full life we can feel empty inside.
Yet we sometimes face health scares, get stressed about money or worry about relationships. Or su er from depression. Whatever it is, we
know we could do with some help. God is good and often meets us when we reach out to Him.
Open minded? Many people have a sense that there is something beyond ourselves that gives life meaning. You are open minded and willing to check things out. Pray
for seven days and discover the adventure of a lifetime – getting to know God!
“God, if you are there – and I’m not sure you are – but if you are, I want to know you. I don’t want to fool myself; I rea y want to know you.....”
Trinity Churches are joining just about every church across
Shrewsbury in trypraying.
Just before Easter adults, children and young people from local churches will be encouraged to use the booklet or app for seven days. Each day has something to get you thinking, a short story of someone sharing how prayer worked in their life, some words to think about, and a chance to talk to God about a big issue you are praying about.
Then – from 10th April – this will go public, with people giving booklets to friends or family members, work colleagues or chance acquaintances. Look
out for advertising across town with the simple message trypraying, on billboards, in the papers, outside churches.

Good news from... Meole Brace
“It’s been great to see different people come together to have fun,
develop friendships and” Two words you may not have
seen together before are ‘Running’ and ‘Church’. So let us explain...
The last few weeks have seen 25-30 people running around Meole Brace each Thursday evening. People of all experience and levels of fitness have been attempting to walk, jog, and run from 0-5k, whilst building a supportive and inclusive community.
The project is a partnership between Trinity Churches and the Diocese of Lich eld, led by Youth Minister Matt Guilder and his team of run leaders. Participants have been encouraged
to use the NHS “Couch to 5k” app a couple of times each week, as well as getting
together on a Thursday night to run
together.
Matt described Thursday evenings
as great fun for all of the group. “It’s
been great to see di erent people
get together to have fun, get to
know each other, and enjoy exercise
together. We want people to be the
best they can be, to be supportive
enjoy running.
and encouraging towards others...

Community Singing Group
‘We laugh as much as we sing; it’s great fun and great therapy’
‘I can come here feeling as low
as low, but when I leave here,
I’m on the highest cloud’
These are some of the quotes from local residents of our small, but steadily growing community singing group. We meet on a Monday afternoon at the Meet Place on the estate.
We start with a cuppa and a chat at 1pm before we start to sing at 1:45. Our currently ‘un-named’ group had a couple of public appearances over the Christmas period and are looking
forward to attending more events in the near future to promote our group. We aim to entertain with a showcase of our talents, as well as acquire a ‘catchy’ group name.
But what we lack name wise,
we more than make up for in enthusiasm, and as the quotes suggest, fun. We would love to welcome more members from the community to join us, so if you enjoy the odd sing-a-long to the radio, or whilst doing the homework or simply enjoy a bit of fun and laughter; then this group is for you.
Kelly Wilcox – Meole resident and singer.
Please contact Gordon Lamb 07975601282 for further details.
On 28-30 May 2016, young people from churches across Shrewsbury will again be putting their
faith into action and showing their love for local communities in practical ways by gardening, litter picking, running street cafes and children’s fun days. The teenagers join together in the morning for worship and then go out to serve the community
in small teams, overseen by a leader, in the afternoons. In the evenings, Soul Purpose hosts community events, including the ever popular Hog Roast outside the Meet Place - look out for our flyers, and we hope to see you there!

EASTER 2016
Soldiers
Each day we’ll be meeting together to read the Bible’s account at the time they actually occurred, and in the Shrewsbury equivalent of where they occurred.
The idea is give people a sense of how this week – the most important week in history for Christians – worked out. We’ll do all of this as near
as we can get to the sort of distance and geography of Jerusalem, superimposed onto this part of Shrewsbury. So
the A49 down from Bayston Hill becomes the Palm
Sunday way into Jerusalem, and the Rea Brook gardens
area on the Meole Estate becomes Gethsemane. The Upper Room is in Radbrook Green, Golgotha is around the Longden Road Cemetery, and Herod’s Palace is around Meole Brace Science College. Each morning event will be short (15 minutes), with a longer evening catch-up
of the day’s event.
There might be some prayers
or a piece of poetry, or simply some silence or prayers. Have a look at the map for more details, or go to www. trinitychurches.org/holyweek which has full details of where / when / what.
walking up the
Roman Road?
Arrests and betrayal in the gardens of the Meole Estate? A public trial in Radbrook Green play area?
It sounds like the stuff of fiction doesn’t it? Yet fiction meets fact as this Easter we’re transforming the local area into a first century landscape. We’re going to be celebrating the events of Holy Week, at the time they actually occurred and the places they occurred... only in Meole Brace and Radbrook Green.

Good news from Radbrook
After over ten years as Manager of Café Connect, Ollie Abbott hung up her apron and retired at the end of February.
We caught up with her – amidst leaving parties and appointing two new co-managers – and reflected on over a decade spent at the church-run coffee shop at the heart of Radbrook Green.
Q&A
When did you first get involved at Café
Connect?
I first got involved in Cafe Connect in 2002, when it was newly opened. I was - and still am - part of the Church of Christ the King in Radbrook Green, and I wanted to get involved in our local community. I became manager in 2005, and haven't looked back since!
You must have met some interesting people over the years...
The one that really sticks in my mind
is a man called Les. The cafe was both
his second home, and in many senses his 'church' as well. When he got frail we used to take him sandwiches up the road, and we were so touched when he left some money to the Cafe on his death. But of course it isn't just Les, everyone who comes into the cafe is special.
Tell us about working with the volunteers...
It has been such a privilege to work
with a great team of volunteers. From teenage exchange students to a 94 year old, without the army of volunteers the cafe would never exist. I always reckon that the most important person in the cafe is whoever is doing the washing up, as without them the place wouldn't operate.
Even on days when the coffee machine blows up, the fridge is bust, you’re short staffed and people are queuing out the door, you always seem to smile and keep going. How?
I can only say that I always feel that God has been helping me. I pray before we open for a peaceful day - though not too peaceful, as I love being in the cafe when there are lots of customers!
with
Ollie Abbott
What are you going to miss the most?
The customers and their love of the cafe. You don't get that in most jobs, and is what has made being manager so special and rewarding.
As you look to the future, what excites you about the Café?
We've made really strong connections with lots of people in Radbrook Green
and beyond, so I'm excited to see ways in which we can bless the community in the future. It's all about love really. I'm also excited by the links we have over many years with people at The Ark, Shrewsbury Homes for All, Soul Purpose, and various other projects. It's great to know that when people come in and buy things at the Cafe, they're being a small blessing to many other people locally as well.
What’s the plan once you retire?
I'm going to try and get involved in some other community projects. You might still see me around the cafe very occasionally for the monthly "Dementia Friendly" events, as well as amongst people who live locally in Radbrook Green.
And as I finish I want
to offer a big thanks to everyone who has helped and supported the Cafe over many, many years. It has been such a privilege...

Living on
This year the ‘Live below the line’ challenge isn’t o cially running but my colleagues and I have decided
to do the challenge anyway. On the 10th February 2016, we started this ridiculous challenge some of us for a week and some for the full 44 days, all in aid of two fantastic causes - UNICEF UK (donations going to the Syria Winter Appeal) and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust (inspired by the Alice Martineau Appeal).
If we're going to make it all the way until the 24th March, we're going
to need your support. So please give as generously as you can. Any donation, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated and will help give us the incentive to keep going with no booze and our £1 a day budget.
Thanks for reading.

Qualified nurses on duty 24 hours
Could you live on £1 a day?
Not just for one day, but for 44 days? That’s exactly what myself and a small team of people are doing.
Last year there was a project
called “Live Below the line” which encouraged participants to live on £1 a day for 5 days or more to raise money for a charity chosen from a list of partners. I decided to join in with it after being inspired by Sylvia Ruxton who’d posted about it on Facebook. During the challenge I had an amazing amount of support from my colleagues at work and some of them expressed an interest in taking part the next time it was on.

Faith Stories
A Christmas
to remember...
For many people going to Germany pre-Christmas must mean just one thing... Christmas markets. But for Mike and Julie Kim, and a few others, they headed to Germany in December 2015
for a very different reason.
After decorations were down, and the fridge was empty of leftovers someone asked one of my kids what the best thing about Christmas had been. “Visiting the refugees in Germany.” “What, better than any presents?” “Yes, making them happy was the best part of Christmas.” I shouldn’t have been surprised, as I think it would be safe to say that it was the same for all fourteen volunteers, who gave their time and energy to travel over to Neuss, near Dusseldorf in Germany, and put on three Christmas parties for almost one hundred refugees. The smiles
on their faces and the outbursts of laughter in the party games were moments to treasure, especially after hearing stories of what they had been through to get there, and how lonely some of them were feeling so far away from home.
Hassan, an Afghan civil engineer, had to escape from the Taliban
after helping an American company rebuild roads and bridges. Ali, a surgical dentist, told sadly of how his home town in Syria had been completely destroyed. As a young Syrian mother told of the terrors crossing from Turkey to Greece, her six-year old son piped up: “I was so scared, I couldn’t stop screaming.” But now, here they were celebrating Christmas with us. “We have never experienced anything like this,” commented one father.
It had all started as an ‘impossible project’, a desire to bring joy and blessing to those who have not known much of it, but with no team, no nance, and no idea of how to organise a place to hold the parties from so far away. We could only pray – and God answered in such an amazing way. In less than a month we had a team of fourteen, the six thousand pounds we needed to fund the parties and buy winter coats for those who came, and a booking to use a Turkish Halal restaurant for three parties.
A big thank you to all who gave to support this project. Teams will be visiting regularly from now on.
