READING

A Read the dialogue below.

UNIT 1

Julie : My grandparents will be celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary next year. We are
planning to surprise them with gifts and a party. I am so excited. I wish I could send them
on a vacation. They really deserve it. There’s only one problem — I don’t have enough in
my savings to bear the cost of their trip.

Jane : Why don’t you ask your parents for some money? I am sure they would be willing to lend
you some money.

Julie : I don’t think I want to do that. They have always been against borrowing and lending
money.

Amy : Why don’t you take up a part-time job or ask your neighbours if they have any work for
you?

Julie : That’s a good idea. I love children and I would be very happy getting paid to babysit my
little cousins. Better still, I could also help Mr Tan, my neighbour, with the gardening,
since everyone says I have green fingers.

Rob : How about the books that you don’t read anymore? You could have a book sale. I am sure
many of our friends who love reading would be interested to buy the books at a much
cheaper price.

Julie : I could have a jumble sale to sell things that I don’t use any more, like my bags, clothes
and even toys.

Jane : Yes, you could! There are so many ways to make money if you really think about it.
Krish : Julie, why don’t you try to save more of your monthly allowance? Stop eating at fast food

joints after school and tuition. Eat at home and bring packed food from home. Also stop
buying branded clothes and shoes. Do you know how much you could save in this way?
More importantly, you would be able to save enough to get the gift for your grandparents.
Julie : I think I will. Thanks for the advice everyone. I really appreciate it.
All : You’re welcome.
