The Habsburgs and their Ukraine

The Habsburgs are one of Europe’s oldest monarchy houses and
belong to the most prominent families of the pan-European and global
scale. For millennia, they ruled (at different times) the Holy Roman Empire
of the German Nation, the Spanish and Portuguese Empires, part of Italy,
the Netherlands, the Austrian Empire, and the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy, which occupied most of Western Europe.

It is important to note that the Habsburgs have long-standing roots in
Ukraine-Rus’. One should remember the origins of the Austrian
Habsburgs branch from the Grand Princes of Kyiv. The founders of this
branch were Maria Theresa (1717-1780) from the House of Habsburg
and her husband Francis I Stefan (1708-1765) from the House of
Lorraine. The latter was a descendant of the Duke of Lorraine Charles III
(1543-1608) and his wife Claude, daughter of King of France Henry II
(1519-1559) and Catherine of Medici. In turn, Henry II was a direct
descendant of King Henry I (1008-1060) and Anna Yaroslavna – the
daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, the granddaughter of St. Volodymyr the
Great, the great-granddaughter of Svyatoslav the Brave and the
great-great-granddaughter of Igor and St. Olga. Therefore, the entire
Austrian branch of the Habsburgs, which is also called the House of
Habsburg-Lorraine, including the Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph I, are
the descendants of the Princes of Kyiv. In addition, the Austrian
Habsburgs are also descendants of the Gediminids and Jagellons, which
further links them to Ukrainian lands and the Ukrainian past.

15

In the last third of the XVIII century. Europe experienced three
divisions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, conducted by Russia,
Prussia, and Austria. The disappearance of this Polish-Lithuanian-Russian
state has catastrophically violated the political equilibrium. The borders
of the Russian Empire shifted to the heart of Europe, and Prussia received
powerful resources, which were used to dominate the German world. The
Habsburgs acquired Galicia, a part of Lesser Poland, and later
Bukovyna. These territories were called the Kingdom of Galicia and
Lodomeria, reminding about the Galician-Volyn possessions of Danilo
Romanovych and his crown.

It was the Ukrainian part of this Kingdom with its capital in Lviv that
became our Piedmont in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Ukrainian press, schooling and higher education developed under the
scepter of Austrian emperors that became Austro-Hungarian monarchs
from the mid-nineteenth century. That is exactly where the classics of our
literature were published during the ban of the Ukrainian press in the
Russian Empire. All the donations for the Shevchenko Scientific Society
from the Left-Bank aristocracy were also sent to Lviv since it was
impossible to even conduct a demonstration in honor of Taras
Shevchenko in Kyiv, Poltava, and Chernihiv. In Lviv Mykhailo Hrushevsky
received his professorship, wrote and published the biggest part of his
timeless “History of Ukraine-Rus”. And it was in Austria-Hungary that the
Ukrainians (including the peasantry) gained their first experience of
parliamentary struggle – high politics in a democratic way.

It is difficult to overestimate the Habsburgs’ contribution to these
very important achievements for the Ukrainian nation and our statehood.
Their role is related to the universal support of Ukraine, in which they saw
the true pillar of their throne, as well as to liberal legislation, which
excluded the possibility of depriving the territories to the East of Zbruch of
all rights and exile these to Siberia.

16

Ukraine and its Habsburgs

Another wave of the national idea spreading initiated by Taras
Shevchenko formed the Ukrainian intellectual elite in the second half of
the XIX – early XX centuries. It included the part of the left-bank nobility
formed by the Cossack officers. Lesya Ukrainka and Pavlo Skoropadskyi
also came from this community, whereas Mykhailo Hrushevskyi and
Simon Petliura came from the clergy in Naddnipryanshchyna (the
territory on either side of the middle course of the Dnipro River).
Khlopomanstvo movement brought many prominent figures from the
Polish environment, including Volodymyr Antonovych and Tadej Rylskyi.
Ivan Franko had Galician noble roots and Andrey Sheptytsky that
became Metropolitan belonged to the Russian aristocracy.

However, even in this multicolored background of extremely gifted
and original personalities and the giants of the Ukrainian Renaissance
stands out one figure that is unique in his experience of personal
Ukrainization and political potential – the archduke of the Habsburg
family, who entered the history of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921
as Vasyl Vyshyvanyi. In fact, several representatives of the Austrian
Habsburgs were Ukrainophiles, but thanks to Vasyl Vyshyvanyi, the
Habsburgs are the only monarchic family in the world with a Ukrainian
among its members, who once took the arms to fight for an independent
Ukraine.

This exceptional personality was Wilhelm von Habsburg-Lothringen
– the great-grandson of Emperor Leopold II and the third cousin of Franz
Josef I. He was born on February 10, 1895, near Pula (Istria, modern
Croatia) and graduated from the Military Academy in 1915 in Austria.
His military career dates back to World War I when the
Austro-Hungarian Monarchy underwent major changes. In 1916, his
uncle-emperor died, and the throne was taken by Charles I. At the end of
1918, Austria-Hungary split into several states. It was the time when the
nations started building their states on the ruins of the empires. Wilhelm
von Habsburg-Lothringen, who was just over twenty years old, fought at
the helm of the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen in particular, and that’s
when he imbued with Ukrainian culture and outlook. This Habsburg

17

came into Ukrainian life, politics, and later history, as Vasyl Vyshyvanyi.

The Archduke Wilhelm’s way to Vasyl Vyshyvanyi

When Archduke Wilhelm was 14, he heard some vicious remarks
about the Hutsuls from his relative Prince Olgerd Chartorysky.
Heavyhearted and confused, a young man secretly traveled to Vorokhta,
spent several days among the Hutsuls and after a loud search, returned
home (to Zywiec near Krakow). In 1919, he will write about it: “Since
then, I have completely changed and returned to Zywiec a different
person from what I used to be when leaving.” (hereafter, transl. from the
original in Ukrainian). What pushed him to Ukrainian then? One may
say, fate, or genes.

In the rank of lieutenant after graduation from the academy,
Archduke Wilhelm was assigned to the 13th Uhlan Regiment, staffed
mainly by Ukrainian young men from Zolochiv region. Then he began to
seriously study Ukrainian. He mastered reading in the winter of 1915, and
his first Ukrainian book was the popular “History of Ukraine” by
Mykhailo Hrushevskyi. Later on, he read works by I. Franko, T.
Shevchenko and other famous Ukrainian writers. His adjutant Ostap
Lutskyi also played a certain role in this process.

The young officer's good relationship with Ukrainian soldiers drew
their hearts towards him. One of them brought from his vacation a
vyshyvanka (a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt) for the Archduke.
Habsburg really enjoyed this gift and he often wore it. That is what his
Ukrainian nickname originates from – Vasyl Vyshyvanyi.
He survived the last years of the Ukrainian Revolution and the last
attempts to oust the Bolsheviks from Ukraine.

In 1920, Habsburg did not accept the UNR alliance with restored
Poland. His article on this matter led to a political scandal and an actual
break of the relationship with his father, who stood in Polonophile
positions and dreamed of the Polish crown. In 1921, Wilhelm Habsburg

18

returned to Vienna, where he owned a paint factory.

Between the world’s wars

It should be noted that Vyshyvanyi - Habsburg was an exception to
the law prohibiting the Habsburgs to live in Austria. Although the
Ukrainian Revolution ended with what was then considered a defeat,
Ukraine remained in the heart of Wilhelm von Habsburg-Lothringen
forever.

In 1921 was published a collection of his poems in Ukrainian
“Mynaiyt Dni” (“The days are passing”). Also, in the interwar period,
Vyshyvanyi published articles in the Ukrainian emigration press. It implies
the existence of a considerable literary legacy that has not yet been fully
collected and is insufficiently researched.

It should be emphasized that in the early 1920s, some of the
Ukrainian monarchists linked their political hopes to Wilhelm Habsburg.
In 1921 he was elected as a chairman of the board of the Ukrainian
National Free Cossack Society, which was established in Vienna.
However, Wilhelm's article, published on December 19 of that year,
destroyed those hopes. Habsburg firmly stated the absence of any claim
against the supreme power in Ukraine.

The move marked the beginning of a decline in political interest to his
persona. Wilhelm Habsburg continued to publish his articles and writings
on political subjects, and also occasionally met with leading Ukrainian
politicians of the time (Pavlo Skoropadskyi, Yevhen Konovalets, Yevhen
Petrushevych, Vyacheslav Lypynskyi, etc.).

Later on, Habsburg became more involved in entrepreneurship. As a
real estate agent, he sold the land. For a while, he lived in France and
Spain. But even then, he still tried to keep in touch with Ukrainian
emigration circles.

There is, for example, a letter to General Vsevolod Petriv of October
23, 1933, sent from Paris, in which Habsburg writes: “My faith remains

the same and I firmly believe in the independence and the sovereignty of
Ukraine, so dear to all of us”.

Interestingly, Polish human intelligence data of that time records a
rallying of both left and right politicians around Wilhelm von
Habsburg-Lothringen. It should be emphasized that Habsburg had the
rare fortune of bringing together people of different political views. It is
only to be regretted that such talent was not fully utilized due to a lack of
political ambition.

In the hell of World War II

During World War II, Vyshyvanyi-Habsburg, similarly to other
Habsburgs, opposed Nazism. He is known to have participated in the
French Resistance movement. Due to the suspicions in cooperation with
British intelligence, Wilhelm Habsburg was under surveillance by the
Gestapo.

Even more interesting to us is the collaboration of Wilhelm von
Habsburg-Lothringen with the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists,
which began in 1942. Thanks to this cooperation, there were initiated the
contacts between the OUN and the French Resistance Movement.
Habsburg also sought to establish connections between the OUN and
Western intelligence agencies in order to intensify the fight against
Nazism.

This activity of Wilhelm Habsburg continued in Vienna at the end of
World War II. There he met the surrender of the Third Reich and also
witnessed the first years of Soviet occupation of Austria. By staying in the
Soviet occupation zone, Habsburg exposed himself to mortal danger. In
the meantime, he got married. Two of his sons were born ... One can only
wonder that he managed to live in Vienna legally for two years after the
end of the war.

The last step into immortality

Habsburg escaped death from the Gestapo tortures but was arrested
by Soviet counterintelligence in Vienna. On September 20, 1947, there
emerged “Resolution on the Selection of a Prevention Measure”
(hereafter, transl. From the original in Russian), which recorded a
decision on prisoner detention in custody.

Pointedly, Habsburg attested with his signature note of announcement
to him this document only on September, 23. In this way, he ended up in
the Lukyanivska Prison, which is in Kyiv. Prisoner of Camera # 17 was
accused ... of first acting in favor of British and then French intelligence.
One can only imagine what torture by the Stalin's executioners the
Archduke went through for the “indictment” dated May 22, 1948, to
state: “Pleaded guilty of committing crimes under Art. 58-2, 58-6 pt. 1
and 58-11 of the RSFSR Criminal Code, 54-2, 54-6 pt.1 and 54-11 of
the UkSSR Criminal Code”.

According to archival records, on July 1, 1948, Habsburg was
admitted to a prison hospital with complaints about general weakness,
dizziness, cough, chest and heart pain. Apparently, the same day they
wrote about him: “a patient of above the average height and proper
physique, dramatically reduced nutrition, anemic ...” According to the
official version, he died of tuberculosis on August 18, 1948. The true
cause of his death remains unknown. Given the circumstances, the death
of the “convict Habsburg-Lothringen W. S.” should be put in the same
row with the political killings of prominent Ukrainian politicians carried
out by the Soviet counterintelligence, including Yevhen Konovalets in
1938, Hetman Danylo Skoropadskyi in 1957, and Stepan Bandera in
1959.

At the end of the “Act” on the death of William Habsburg, it is noted:
“Authorize the body to be buried, the head of prison No. 1 of the MOI in
Kiev region, Captain Zhuravlev”. Thus, a distant descendant of the great
Princes of Kyiv was laid to rest in the ancient capital of his ancestors.

Memory

Due to the active political involvement, there remained considerable
documentary and literary heritage after Archduke Wilhelm (Vasyl
Vyshyvanyi). The search and study of everything that the Ukrainian and
foreign archives hold about him are ongoing. The most important findings
as of now are several copies of his autobiography, written in 1919 for the
request of Ivan Ohienko, archival investigative work of 1947-1948, as
well as correspondence with Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi, Baron
Kazimir Guzhkovskyi and Baron Mykola Vasylko.

Due to the study of these and other sources, a number of publications
have appeared on Archduke Wilhelm (Vasyl Vyshyvanyi). Of major
importance among them is the work of Ukrainian historians Y.
Tereshchenko and T. Ostashko “Ukrainian patriot of the Habsburg
dynasty”, enriched with the publication of the body of discovered
documents and works. It was completed in 2006 and published in 2008
by the “Tempora” publishing house. It is a solid edition of nearly 400
pages. Another very important publication is the book by American
historian Timothy Snyder “The Red Prince: The Secret Lives of a Habsburg
Archduke”, which was published in the US in 2008, re-published in
Polish translation in 2010 in Warsaw by “Świat Książki” publishing
house, and in 2011 – in Kyiv, translated into Ukrainian by the “Granny-T”
publishing house under the name “Chervonyi Knyaz” (“Red Prince”).

Evidence of the return of the bright and prominent figure of Archduke
Wilhelm (Vasyl Vyshyvanyi) to the history of Ukraine, as well as to the
mass consciousness of Ukrainians, are the streets and squares named
after him in Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhya, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Kyiv, Lviv,
Odesa, Chernivtsi. Another important step in this direction is the initiative
of the Lviv Bank Hotel to associate the name of Vasyl Vyshyvanyi with
their best apartments, which will promote the historical memory of the
heroic Habsburg among the most influential guests of Lviv. Perhaps, their
acquaintance with the life of Archduke Wilhelm will help to break still
pervasive stereotypes in the Western world, which regard Ukraine and
Ukrainian culture only as part of the “Russian world”. The return of the
Archduke Wilhelm von Habsburg-Lothringen and the memory about him

23

during the current period is a landmark as it reminds us of the events of a
hundred years ago with all the variety of political alternatives of that time.
Most importantly, the life of Vasyl Vyshyvanyi indicates the magnetism of
Ukrainian culture that has attracted such bright personalities to our world.
