Shade Walker V1 lipping into the darkness as the shadow tracks their quarry, an unseen eye turns to a sudden blade as their wielder bursts forth from the silhouette to ambush their prey, only to fade away, unseen by the enemy’s companions. When a glimpse through the empty blackness of the void occurs, the creatures and minds within can feel it. They can reach out, affecting the hearts and souls of mortals and higher beings alike. When this happens, creatures of the black slither from their realm and creators, drifting between the shadows of the mortal coil. These creatures of animated nothingness are drawn to those that stalk others in the darkness, seeking to unite with a kindred spirit in the gloom. These are known as Shade Walkers, assassins that use their shadow as a tool, weapon and familiar. Subservient Shade Beginning at 3rd level, you have made a pact, deal or friendship with an outer entity, known colloquially as a Shade. It functions as your shadow, animating it to serve as an extension of your will. It can mimic yours and another creature’s movements perfectly, and as a bonus action can be moved up to your movement speed to a maximum of 100 feet away from you. While it is away from you, you have no shadow. While it is attached to someone and mimicking their movements, it is impossible to perceive it as something other than a regular shadow, although a creature with Truesight or one that can see through magical darkness sees it as a void-like shimmer. Your Shade is immune to all damage and conditions, except radiant damage and being turned Invisible. It has an AC equal to yours and 1 hit point. If it is destroyed, you must long rest before it can reappear. When it is in darkness, it is Invisible. Your Shade is also amorphous, and can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. Your Shade’s creature type is Aberration. You can also communicate with it telepathically. You can always see through it’s eyes, and can hear what it hears (it has no sense of smell or taste). Your Shade also has Darkvision out to 120 feet. It can see in dim light within 120 feet of it as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. It can’t discern colour in darkness, only shades of grey. Unseen Ally At 3rd level, your Shade counts as an ally when in combat, and can flank creatures. While it is away from you, creatures attempting to see or attack it have disadvantage, unless they have Truesight or a sense that can see through magical darkness. Your Shade can be moved up to your movement speed as a bonus action, including along walls, ceilings and liquids, and acts on your turn. Your Shade can exist in the same space as other creatures unimpeded, and can be walked through without causing any movement penalty. Behind You At 9th level, your shadow is becoming more corporeal, now able to strike from the gloom. Your shadow can now attack once per turn, It’s to hit equal to your Wisdom modifier + proficiency bonus, and the damage of the attack is the equivalent of a nonmagical weapon you wield and are proficient with. You choose the weapon, and the damage is considered magical. Your shadow can use a different weapon each turn if you have them available on your person. Nowhere to Run At 13th level, your shadow can act as a brief portal, allowing you to burst from the black and surprise your foes. If you start or end your turn in dim light or darkness, you can fall through the void and reappear in the same space as your Shade. You can do this a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest. Shadow Symmetry At 17th level, your Shade has adapted to your combat strategies, attacking simultaneously at critical moments. Your Shade can now apply Sneak Attack to it’s damage when applicable. It does not need to be wielding a finesse or ranged weapon. Now on DNDBeyond! Check it out here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/subclasses/1522022- shade-walker Wanna help? Join the Patreon!
