2 WHO IS PRINCE STOLAS? Stolas is described in multiple grimoires on demonology in the 16th and 17th century. Stolas is typically mid-level in the hierarchy of demons, and depicted as a great bird, like an owl. Stolas commands twenty-six legions of demons, as described in the Ars Goetia, is an astronomer, and is possesses knowledge of precious stones, plants, and herbs. DEVIL OR DEMON? In Stolas’ theological origins, he is described as a demon. This makes sense in the context of his origins, but not D&D. Stolas belongs to a hierarchy, himself being a prince, and while chaos can exist within the ranks, it is far from the goal. The demons described in works such as the Ars Goetia are thus, in D&D terms, not especially akin to the denizens of the Abyss that share their name. As such, Stolas and every other figure in this series will be described as a devil for the purposes of standard D&D lore. STOLAS IN YOUR WORLD The devils described in this series will fit nicely within most worlds that use standard D&D cosmology, as denizens of the 9 hells commanding legions of devils. You can put them in existing parts of the plane, or even create a new hell just for these devils (the 10 hells?), drawing inspiration from their source material to shape this new region. 3 VARIANT: THE FIEND PATRON (STOLAS) Stolas is known to impart his knowledge on mortals, allowing someone to become a warlock in his stead. As a devil, he fits within the bounds of the Fiend warlock patron, but for a version of that patron that’s built specifically for Stolas’ power, look no further. This subclass with contain new features for each level that a warlock gains a subclass feature. A warlock of the Fiend can choose to take any of these instead of the normal feature. For the purposes of prerequisites, the warlock still counts as having the Fiend patron. EXPANDED SPELL LIST Stolas allows you to take a different list of spells for the Fiend patron. The following spells are added to the Warlock spell list for you: STOLAS EXPANDED SPELLS LEVEL 1: SCHOLARLY BLESSINGS [Replaces Dark One’s Blessing] Beginning at first level, you are imbued with enhanced capabilities for learning. 5 PRINCE STOLAS Heroes who come across Prince Stolas in their travels will find him odd compared to their knowledge of devils. Stolas is relatively calm, he does not seek conflict but can take up arms when needed. Solas is primarily interested in the pursuit of knowledge and will be more likely to contract the heroes for quests that broaden his knowledge of the world than to attack them when they meet. Stolas, despite his calm demeanor, still has a limit, and when the limits of his temper are met, he can be rather fearsome, as one of the more cunning of the devils they’ll meet. Stolas commands twenty-six legions of devils, and while he will normally be met alone, if you are to encounter him within the Nine Hells, these legions will not be far, and will come to his aid if he is threatened (DMs discretion as to how many legions come to his call, and what they are made up of). In exchange for helping him to gain knowledge, Stolas might offer patronage to a warlock, but more commonly will offer boons to players who help him. BOONS OF STOLAS Expert Astronomy: You gain the ability to navigate with the stars, you always know cardinal directions and gain darkvision with a range of 60ft. Herbalism Adept: You gain proficiency with the herbalism kit, and the nature skill. If you already have either of these, you gain double proficiency. Geological Knowledge: You can always identify types of stone , gems, and crystals, as well as the value of gems and crystals.
