Tortle Subrace_ Tuga _ GM Binder

Tortle Subrace_ Tuga _ GM Binder

Tugan Life -Exerpts from Murvyn Corthard's lecture on the ecology of the Torle raceTuga lay their eggs on the sacred beaches of their kind. Young Tuga hatch and head straight out to sea, never knowing their parents. Little is known of the ecology of Tuga during this oceanic juvenile stage, though it is believed from the physiology of adults that they spend much of this time out in the open ocean, hunting fish and squid in the depths where little light can penetrate. At around the age of maturity, in a feat of pan-Torilian timekeeping all Tuga born on the same beach gain the urge to leave the oceans, and venture onto land for the first time since the day of their hatching. We do not know the process by which this happens, but it is believed that it is an adaption that came about in order to facilitate finding a mate. During this adult phase, Tuga have an inherent need to gain strength. This is because, you see, all Tugan courtship is done at the same time on the sacred beaches of their birth. Some time towards what is believed to be the end of their lifetime, in a fantastic and fiercely guarded ritual, all Tuga compete in bouts and displays to attract the opposite sex. These can vary from strength contests where falling on your back seem to dictate a loss; to awe inspiring displays of rhythm, grunts and chanting. There seems to be many ways to gain 'wins', and many 'events', so to speak, in which to compete. From the limited observational accounts available of this ritual, it seems that males are competing for quantity of females, and females are competing for quality of males. With all these factors at play, how any decisions are made, we do not yet know. With the danger involved in making observations, and the infrequency that these rituals happen, it may take centuries to find any answer. A recurring theme of this race, it is a mystery where Tuga go and what they do once mating is complete and the new generation of eggs is buried in the sand on the sacred beaches. Beliefs Like their purely terrestrial cousins, Tuga have no pantheon of their own. The greatest belief a Tuga usually will have is self belief. Though it is not unheard of for a Tuga to take on Deities of other races, though this relationship seems to be tenuous, and of powerful Tuga Clerics there are none on record. Tuga that do go down this road will favour Deities of chaos and power. Individualistic and adaptable adventurers It is believed that all that a Tuga does in this terrestrial life stage is in some way preparing themselves for this courtship ritual. They are selfish towards this cause and will seek out power in any way they can. Traditionally this seems to be through raw strength, favouring a martial and wilderness based existence. This is not in any way to suggest that Tuga are in any way unable to exist in civilised societies. As long as they can see a way to their end goal, they are intelligent and adaptable enough to be found in most walks of life. There have even been reports of highly powerful magical individuals. Whilst not naturally charismatic to other races, they have a charm of sorts and display a strong aptitude for music, rhythm in particular, though their taste can be considered harsh to a cultured ear. Many Tuga in their terrestrial form seem to head back to the ocean for a nautical existence, taking to the high seas again as pirates. 1 This is unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Fan Content Policy. Tugan Traits Your Tugan character has certain characteristics in common with Tortles. Any differences are listed below. Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2, your Wisdom score decreases by 1 and your Dexterity decreases by 2. Age. Young Tuga live at sea. They reach adulthood by the age of 30, when they venture on to land and live an average of 200 years. Alignment. Tuga tend to lead chaotic, individualistic lives. They seek strength, beauty and to adorn themselves with attractive adornments. Most are chaotic neutral. A few have been known to act selflessly, tending more toward good, but it's unusual for a Tugan to favour others over their own quest for strength. Size. Tuga adults are bulker than Tortles averaging 525 pounds. Speed. You have a swimming speed of 30 feet. Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern colour in darkness, only shades of gray. Snapping Jaw. Your jaw is a vice like grip used for catching prey in the deep. You may use your bite as an extra 'hand' for grappling. Raised in the Deep. You have resistance to damage caused by being crushed or squeezed. Deep Diver. As an action, you can go into a state in which you have no need to breathe. This state can last up to 3 hours, once this state ends you gain one point of exhaustion. Natural Armour. Young Tuga have soft shells that gain hardness with age; it gives you a base AC of 10 + your Constitution modifier + your Proficiency Bonus. Shell Defence. Due to your racial adaptations you cannot withdraw into your shell. Unadapted for land. When a you are knocked prone, make a Dexterity save DC 11. On a failure you are knocked on your back and must use an action to attempt an Acrobatics check DC 11 to get back up, taking your usual speed penalty. My Intentions I have a background in Zoology, and so wanted to make a subrace of Tortle based on biological principles, sprinkled with flavour and partially inspired by that futurama episode with Dr Zoidberg trying to find a mate... I tried to keep the theme going while keeping it balanced. I wanted this subrace to be malleable, but as you can see it is meant as a flavourful grappler. Revised feat Grappler Prerequisite: 13 Strength You have advantage on attack rolls against creatures you are grappling. You can use your bonus action to attempt a shove special attack on a creature you have grappled. You can use your reaction to grapple back a creature that has grappled you. New feat Wrestler Prerequisite: 13 Strength This feat gives you options for maneuvers that can be used when grappling. Body Slam: If the creature you are grappling with is no larger than one size greater than you, then you can make a special grapple attack. On a success, you pick up the target and slam it into the ground, knocking it prone and dealing it 2d6 + Str modifier bludgeoning damage. If the target is smaller than you, it takes an additional 1d6 bludgeoning damage for each size category smaller than you, and 1d6 per size category above medium. On completion the creature is no longer grappled by you. On a failure the target avoids the attack and is no longer grappled by you. Vice: If you have another hand free, you may spend an action to attempt to crush a creature you currently have grappled. Make a second grapple attempt, on a success the target creature takes 1d6 + Str modifier bludgeoning damage. On subsequent turns you may use an attack action to tighten your grip. The target makes a Constitution saving throw DC 10 + your Str modifier, dealing an extra 1d6 damage each successive fail. After the first fail, the target is gasped and can no longer speak or cast spells with verbal components. After the second, the target can no longer breathe, falls prone (if not already) and begins to suffocate. The target may attempt to break out of the grapple at the beginning of each of its turns with a contested Athletics check. Feats This is unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Fan Content Policy.
