Candy Dragon - The Homebrewery

Candy Dragon - The Homebrewery

Faerie dragons are approximately catsized dragons that occupy the lands of candy and the fey realm beyond. While variants of greater size aren’t completely unheard of, the realm’s surges of wild magic seem to have made this specific specimen undergo a bizarre transformation; changing its physical nature entirely to become a new type of being, while still retaining its draconic essence. Instead of flesh and bone like other members of its kind, the Candy Dragon’s body is made of living elemental confectionery, granting it special resistances and an uncommon physiology. Somehow, in its enchantment, the creature has managed to integrate its Artwork: Backgrounds: Weiao/Cristian Romero. Character: Magdalena Katańska. Watercolor: u/flamableconcrete Design: u/CamunonZ old abilities into the new form, creating unique brands of magic which manifest as lethal servings of all kinds of sweets. Boasting a ridiculous visage capable of mystifying just about any who behold it, this remarkable creature makes for a foe of unprecedented unpredictability; though it usually won’t engage in battle of its own accord. Distinctive as it may be, the Candy Dragon still keeps a fondness for good company, foodstuff and sense of humor. Travelers can play to its particular nature by offering it treasure in the form of sour sweets, shiny items, and curious baubles in exchange for bits of information or safe passage through its territory.

The candy dragon’s creature type is dragon, but it registers as elemental and fey to spells and other effects that detect the presence of the elemental or fey creature types. Bad Flier. The candy dragon falls at the end of a turn if it's airborne and the only thing holding it aloft is its flying speed. Syrup Plating. The candy dragon’s body is coated in soft and sticky syrup, giving it resistance to bludgeoning, slashing and piercing damage. Any Medium or smaller creature that hits the dragon with a melee weapon attack must make a DC 16 Strength or Dexterity saving throw (their choice). On a failed save, the creature's weapon becomes stuck to the syrup. If the weapon's wielder can't or doesn't let go of the weapon, they become grappled while it remains stuck. They can use their action to make a Strength check against the dragon’s spell save DC (13), pulling the weapon free on a success. Amusing Presence. Each creature that comes within 20 feet of the candy dragon and can see it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become bewildered by its appearance. An affected target doesn’t move and can’t take any actions or reactions. At the start of its turns, an affected target can make a new Wisdom saving throw. If it succeeds, this effect ends for that target. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Amusing Presence for the next 24 hours. Innate Spellcasting. The candy dragon's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 13). The dragon can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: 5/day: Absorb Elements 3/day each: Nathair’s Mischief, Snilloc’s Snowball Storm (appears as cotton candy) 1/day: Bigby’s Hand (appears as a dragon head made of pudding) Variable Multiattack. The candy dragon can make three attacks in any order, using its bite, claws, wings or tail. Sugary Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) poison damage. After a creature is hit by this attack two times, they must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. Cane Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) slashing damage. Biscuit Wings. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage and the target is pushed 5 feet away and knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed. Marshmellow Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage and the target becomes grappled by the dragon. Cream Blast (Recharge 1-3). The candy dragon spits a highvelocity, concentrated glob of sweet cream which explodes upon impact at a point of its choice within 60 feet of it. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. A target is covered in cream on a failed save, becoming blinded and having their speed reduced by 20 feet until the end of their next turn. On a successful one, a target is not blinded and has their speed reduced by 10 feet until the end of their next turn. A creature covered in cream can use their action to wipe it off from their body, ending the effects early. Chocolate Breath (Recharge 5-6). The candy dragon exhales a wave of chocolate that splashes forth on a 60-foot cone in front of it. Each creature in that area must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw. A target is completely covered in hot chocolate on a failed save, taking 6d6 fire damage and 6d6 acid damage. On a successful one, they take half as much damage and are only partially covered in the chocolate. A target completely covered in chocolate can use their action to wipe it off from their body. If they end their turn while still completely covered, the chocolate hardens into a solid coating, leaving them encased within it for up to 1 minute. An encased creature is incapacitated and blinded; and cannot breathe, move, or speak. The chocolate coating has an AC of 14, a hit point maximum of 20, and immunity to poison and psychic damage. Whenever the coating takes slashing or piercing damage, half of it is dealt to the creature trapped inside. After the chocolate is reduced to 0 hit points, or 1 minute passes, it breaks itself apart and the encased creature is freed. Wing Buffet. The dragon makes a wing attack against one creature that moved within 15 feet of it. Tail Snack. The dragon makes a tail attack against one creature that made an attack against the dragon.

If you wish to make this encounter more accessible towards martial characters, or just ease its difficulty in general, you may add one or all of the following traits to the Candy Dragon’s statblock. Water Susceptibility. For every 5 feet the dragon moves in water, or for every gallon of water splashed on it, it takes 1 cold damage. If the dragon starts its turn fully submerged, it gains vulnerability to cold damage for the next 2 rounds. Frozen Dessert. Whenever the candy dragon takes an amount of cold damage equal to or higher than its Strength score in a single turn, it loses its resistance to bludgeoning, slashing and piercing damage for the next 2 rounds. Creme Brulee. Whenever the candy dragon takes an amount of fire damage equal to or higher than its Constitution score in a single round, it loses its resistance to bludgeoning, slashing and piercing damage for the next 2 rounds.
