Puragaus - The Immolation Devil 2.0 - The Homebrewery

D The Puragaus evils are lawful evil outsiders that hail from the plane of Hell. They obey a rigid hierarchy, base much of their dealings with others on strict contracts, and are always looking to gain an advantage. Immolation devils are tyrant warlords and terrifying field generals among Hell's legions. While many other greater devils manipulate and corrupt subtly and from afar, Puragaus surround themselves with lesser diabolical minions, lead interplanar incursions, hold infernal redoubts upon mortal worlds, or strike against any who would defy the will of Hell. While this is their usual nature, the touch of a Deity can change any Devil’s body and mind to become something else entirely. Physical Description Ash and embers encrust the smoldering humanoid frame of this imperious, often dragon-winged devil. They usually stand just over ten feet tall, with wingspans nearing twenty feet, and weigh 900 pounds. This specimen, however, is a tad smaller: at 8 feet tall, weighing between 250 and 320 pounds. Society Devils exist in a rigid hierarchy, united under the iron fist of their creator: Asmodeus, the Prince of Darkness. Created from the souls of the damned, with their individuality and identity stripped away through centuries of torment until they are reduced to mindless piles of flesh called lemures, devils rise through the ranks by proving themselves through ages of service and torture. Devils can be transformed into different castes by proving themselves to their infernal masters (an erinys can be transformed into an osyluth, for instance), but the hierarchy is not based solely on form, and a highly skilled lesser devil might command less experienced greater devils. Commonly summoned by mortal spellcasters, devils willingly serve and bargain with those who conjure them, but always seek to corrupt their masters or pervert their orders to serve Hell's greater agenda. Any devil who, by whatever means, managed to break free from this hierarchy, could find their view on the possibilities of mortal life to be severely expanded. Relations If tieflings face a significant amount of prejudice from most other races, who view them as fiend-spawn, seeds of evil, monsters, and lingering curses placed upon the world; then surely the real thing will be even worse. Normally, any civilized races would outright hunt down a sighted Devil independently of their intentions, while more monstrous species would fear and reject them unless forced or cowed into acceptance. The direct intervention of a Deity’s herald, however, might be able to forge a reputation capable of changing that predicament. The absolute notion that Devils are innately evil will still prevent even such an unusual specimen from easily fitting into most cultures on the Material Plane; exceptions being made perhaps in exceedingly cosmopolitan or planarinfluenced nations. Alignment and Religion As a devil extracted from their original plane and morphed from their original state of being, this one’s general creeds, beliefs and alignment rest entirely on its own free will. It does feel an indescribable sense of gratitude, however, to the entity which made this new existence possible; as well as an innate love for the pleasures of physical life accessible through its newfound freedom. As to whether that could be considered a form of worship, is left to the interpretation of onlookers.

Adventurers If it so wishes, a Deity-touched devil could integrate into an adventuring party crazy enough to accept them as a companion. It could be for the thrill of battle, a desire for riches, or simply the search of entertainment. As a pure-blooded denizen of Hell, their fiendish powers render the Puragaus a specially mighty sorcerer, but with a sturdier physique than most spellcasters. Puragaus Traits An imperious, pure-blooded devil whose body and soul were changed by a Deity’s touch. Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Strength score increases by 1. Age. Although devils are normally considered to be immortal, that’s no longer guaranteed to be the same for you. Even so, you can tell a few hundred years will pass by before you perish. Alignment. You were once a greater devil inhabiting the pits of Hell, but the touch of a Deity has forever drastically changed you. Though you might sometimes have urges to chaos or evil, your destiny and alignment are up to you. Size. This specimen stands smaller than the usual for its brethren: at 8 feet tall, weighing between 250 and 320 pounds. Your size is Medium. Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Devil. Your creature type is humanoid, but you register as fiend to spells and other effects that detect the presence of the fiend creature type. Darkvision. Thanks to your infernal blood, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Infernal Resilience. You have resistance to fire damage and are immune to fire damage from non-magical sources. Infernal Body. You do not need to sleep, but are not immune to falling unconscious, and must still perform rests like usual. You need to eat and drink, but can gain nourishment from ash, cinders, dust, and sand. Immolation. As an action on your turn, you can set yourself ablaze with wreathing flames. The flames last for 1 minute or until you choose to end them (no action required). While ablaze, you shed bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet, and you gain resistance to cold damage. In addition, as a reaction to being hit with a melee attack by a creature within 5 feet of you, you can cause the attacker to take fire damage equal to your level. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest. Languages. You can speak, read, and write both Common and Infernal.

Puragaus Variants (Optional) You can choose between the following options for your last racial trait: Winged. You have dragon-like wings sprouting from your back. You have a flying speed of 30 feet while you aren’t wearing heavy armor, and 15 feet while you are. Beguiling Words. You know the Friends cantrip, and can cast it without material components. Once you reach 7th level, you can cast the Charm Monster spell once as a 4thlevel spell. You must finish a long rest to cast these spells again with this trait. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells. Infernal Sorcery. You know the Fire Bolt cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Hellish Rebuke spell once as a 2nd-level spell. Once you reach 5th level, you can also cast the Flame Blade spell once. You must finish a long rest to cast these spells again with this trait. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells. Devil’s Claws. You naturally possess long and sharp claws which can be used to inflict harm. Your unarmed strikes deal slashing damage equal to 1d6 + your Constitution modifier on a hit. Tiefling Variant: Bloodline of Zalleros Somewhere within the material plane lives Zalleros, the Unbound: a greater devil extracted from Hell by an unknown deity, and given complete freedom to do as he wishes. Tieflings tied to him have inherited his anatomy, and thus can make use of his natural powers as a devil of immolation. Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1. Legacy of Callean. You know the Fire Bolt cantrip. Once you reach 7th level, you can cast the Fire Shield spell once without the use of material components. You must finish a long rest to cast this spell again with this trait. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
