Artelia, Passion & Solutions Case Study Masterplanning Angelsey Abbey Our added value service Anglesey Abbey near Cambridge has experienced unprecedented growth in numbers of visitors due to local development and population expansion. NT was therefore seeking a strategy to improve visitor flow, accessibility and facilities to maintain NT’s vision of ‘Everyone Welcome’ and a ‘Great Visitor Experience’. Artelia led a strategic masterplanning and engagement process, appointing architects Baynes & Mitchell, to develop designs to enhance the visitor experience across the Abbey’s 98 acres of Grade II* listed landscaped grounds, gardens and Lode Mill property. The proposed masterplan focuses on five areas with different functions and finding practical solutions to issues including: • Existing modern visitor centre and proposes a new pavilion to rationalise the movement fluxes. • Catering - considering options for grab and go café sites across the site to relieve pressure on the main cafe/restaurant area • Central hub to bring key staff together and create a focal point for education and outreach facilities • Extension of car park and options for creating a second entrance with 200 car parking spaces, ticketing, WCs and cafe to disperse visitors over a wider area. • Children’s play opportunities including play structures Services: Lead Consultant Stakeholder engagement Project Management Cost Management Design Coordination • Stakeholder engagement and facilitation sessions run with property staff and visitors to understand current challenges • Site surveys and investigation to understand visitor flow and congestion • Concept design options developed • Outline cost plan and 10 year cash flow forecast developed to determine financial feasibility • Phased programme developed to show viability of delivery. • Reports presented to NT

Artelia initially supported NT with the development of costed feasibility studies for Sandilands which also involves renovation and redevelopment of the former clubhouse which is in a state of advanced disrepair. Following a successful Gate 1 review and competitive tender process, Artelia was appointed as cost manager and contract administrator for the redevelopment of the site including: • Working with the appointed architect and landscape architect to cost the emerging design and provide guidance on budget and value for money, lifecycle costing and carbon. • Advising on procurement including packages for habitat / landscape and the buildings works Services: Cost Management Contract Administration • The new visitor facilities will enable the National Trust to create a sustainable income to reinvest in the site. • Building survey of redundant golf club building, informing scheme design and scope of works. • Fully costed option appraisals including refurbishment of existing club house and option to rebuild, along with lifecycle and cashflow models to inform scheme viability, business planning and NT decision-making. • Resultant scheme will see the old golf club sustainably remodelled and repurposed, reusing the existing structure to save embodied carbon.
Artelia, Passion & Solutions Case Study Climate Change Remediation Quarry Bank Mill Flood Recovery Our added value service Quarry Bank Estate, Mill and associated hydroelectric station, is located on the River Bollin at Styal in Cheshire. Artelia, Passion & Solutions Case Study Visitor Experience Belton House Car Park Project benefits Belton House’s visitor numbers have grown significantly over the last decade to reach in excess of 450k per year. However, its main visitor car park was in an advanced state of deterioration with large parts rendered unusable during the winter months. The car park’s poor condition led to numerous complaints from visitors, alongside insurance claims for vehicular damage. Artelia was commissioned to manage an options review, design, planning, associated surveys, procurement, CDM, management of appointed contractor, delivery and handover of an operational car park. The extent of the scheme included surfacing the existing car park, providing a sustainable drainage system; resurfacing the South Drive and creating a link road from the car park to the South Drive. Key challenges included: • Local authority and Historic England consultation regarding consent, for car park’s location within the Grade 1 Registered Parkland. • Liaison with Highways regarding access and egress and creation of a one-way system. • Drainage design requiring geotechnical surveys to ensure that an appropriate Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDs) drainage system could be specified and built. • Phasing, construction planning and logistics to enable Belton to remain open whilst the work was undertaken. Services: Project Management Cost Management Design Coordination CDM Procurement Logistics Site Supervision • Delivered in just three months on site - minimising disruption and in good time for the Winter Lights festival. • Significantly improves the visitor experience at Belton and mitigated the issue of reputational risk for NT and the property. • Improves access for all, particularly disabled visitors and families with young children, buggies etc. • Encourages greener travel through provision of electric vehicle charging facilities. • Improves traffic management and safety around site and car park. • New car park scheme drainage has proven to resilient and effective during recent 2023 flood events.
