The design of the Federal flag was inspired from the flag design competition in May 1948 A total of 373 artists took part in the competition, which went through a rigorous process of selection & deliberation On 15 November 1949, only three designs made it to the final stage of selection The design by an architect from the Department of Public Works Johor, Mohamed bin Hamzah obtained the majority votes & consensus from the meeting of the Conference of Rulers on 22 & 23 February 1950 However, some changes were made to the original design. The crescent & stars which were originally in white were changed to yellow to depict the colour of the monarch Custom flag What more if it is hung upside down!
